Douglas Costa paced Bayern Munich past FC Koln, but he wasn't alone in his superb performance

Tip Of The Cap: Arjen Robben. The Flying Dutchman made his much anticipated return to the starting lineup and did not show any signs of rust. He crossed, shot and dribbled his way past a fairly porous Koln defense. His goal was a classic Arjen Robben goal. After some clever interplay with Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski, he found himself with the ball at his feet at point blank range when he calmly drifted to his left and hit the wide open net. If he can stay healthy, Pep Guardiola must be drooling at the potential of the Bayern attack going forward.

Golf Clap: Kingsley Coman. The youngster is showing game after game that he was worth the hype when he came over from Juventus. His speed and skill on the wings was lethal and his assist on the Arturo Vidal goal was a thing of beauty. He dribbled past his defender and laced a picture perfect pass for Vidal to blast home. He led the team in dribbles, a skill he is very adept at, and used it to great effect in his harassment of the Koln defense.

Standing Ovation: Robert Lewandowski. The big number nine did exactly what big number nine's are supposed to do: Put the ball on target. He had a game high seven shots, four of them on the money and one of them going in for a goal off a corner. He also drew a penalty late in the game that will probably raise some eyebrows, but selling contact to draw a foul is part of the game and there was a definite foul on the play. After being frustrated by Arsenal in the Champions League match, this was a statement game from Big Shot Bob to prove that he is still one of the world's best.

Meister Of The Match: Douglas Costa. One of the most dangerous Bayern attackers, Douglas Costa showed his versatility in this game as he not only locked down his usual position on the left flank, but also showed that he can go in the attacking middle part of the field and be equally as lethal. Costa led the team with six passes that led to shots on goal, and had the third highest touches and passes on the team. His newfound versatility will certainly give Pep more options as Bayern looks to a potential return of Franck Ribery.

Milestones galore were on the docket today, as FC Bayern Munich showed no negative aftereffects from the rare loss against Arsenal in the Champions League. Arjen Robben marks his comeback from injury with a game-winning goal, while his fellow forwards just keep scoring.

1. FC Köln came to the Allianz Arena, hoping that the reigning Bundesliga champions would show some fatigue and weakness after a heart-breaking loss in London midweek. No such luck for coach Peter Stöger and his men, as Bayern Munich made it clear who is the boss in Germany, with a clear 4-0 win at home. Pep threw all sorts of curveballs at his Austrian compatriot, including starting the game with five forwards in Robert Lewandowski, Douglas Costa, Thomas Müller, Kingsley Coman and Arjen Robben. You could just imagine Stöger's mind racing when he first saw the Bayern lineup.

Bayern possessing in first half, Köln just holding on for dear life

As we've become accustomed, Bayern played their game, possessing the ball against a team that loaded up their own half with everyone but their striker, in hopes of not conceding early. The plan seemed to be working, as the guests were tied up in their own half almost the entire first 45 minutes, only rarely venturing into Bayern's side of the field, but not allowing any scores. Thomas Müller would probably have liked his 11th minute scoring chance back, where he found himself alone in front of Timo Horn, but fired right into the keeper's hands.

Bayern moving everyone around

Using a lot of position movement to try to confuse the opponent, Pep had players moving around into different positions most of the game. Kingsley Coman and Douglas Costa caused all sorts of problems on the wings, either dribbling around their defenders, or bringing in cross after cross into the box. Chances were there, but nobody in red could get anything past Horn.

Robben announces his return, opens the scoring

In the end, it only appeared to be a matter of time before Bayern would break through. Robben initiated the sequence for the first goal, with a nice through pass to Müller in the right corner, who would quickly pass into the box to Lewandowski, whose shot was blocked by a defender. But the rebound would bounce right to a streaking Robben, who would pick up the loose ball, and put it past the out of position Horn.

Vidal adds to the lead

One of the most noticeable players in the first half was young French phenom Kingsley Coman, repeatedly terrorizing the outside backs, no matter what side he was on. After twisting his opponent around, Coman would cut a cross back to the top of the box, where Arturo Vidal would accept the present, and bury it in the goal for a 2-0 lead.

The rare excursions into Bayern territory would lead to some lukewarm chances for Köln, but they would either be wildly inaccurate shots, or offside, like Anthony Modeste's chance in front of Manuel Neuer (that he put over the goal anyway) just before the halftime whistle.

More of the same in the second half

Both teams came out unchanged from the locker rooms, and so did the run of play. Bayern would dominate possession, while Köln would look to hoof the ball upfield, hoping Modeste could do something with it. However, it would take until the 62nd minute before Lewandowski would remove all doubt about who would take the three points today, when a curled free kick from Costa into the box was expertly headed into the far corner by the Polish striker, leaving Timo Horn no chance, to make the score 3-0.

Lewy draws a penalty kick, Müller does what he does

Although quiet for most of the game, Lewandowski still put in a lot of work, and contributed some more to the Bayern offense, by getting taken down in the box by two defenders simultaneously, and earning a penalty kick. Thomas Müller, the designated PK-taker, confidently converted from the spot, putting the ball just inside the right post, with Horn jumping the other way, to finish the scoring at 4-0.

A deserved win, a historical milestone

After struggling to break down a team defending deep (let me know if you've heard that one before), Bayern show everyone why they are the class of the Bundesliga, and Köln can't really complain about that scoreline, as they barely made it out of their half all game. Bayern extend their record winning streak to start a season to ten, and also achieve an unbelievable milestone for the club, notching Bayern's 1000th win in the Bundesliga, well ahead of their closest rival, Werder Bremen, who just claimed victory number 741 today.

Instant Analysis

Köln managed only eight forays into Bayern territory (with more than just perfunctory possession) in the first half, and about seven in the second half

Would Bayern play a four-man or a three-man backline? Well, how about two? For large chunks of the game, the Bayern defense would consist of Jerome Boateng and Rafinha, while Philipp Lahm and David Alaba would bomb forward. Even Boateng was frequently sighted close to the Köln penalty box.

Poor Jonas Hector. The German national team player was consistently burned and outplayed by 19-year old Kingsley Coman. Even when Hector would anticipate which way Coman was going to go, the Frenchman would still blow past him and deliver crosses into the box.

One of the prettiest plays occurred in the 72nd minute, when Coman would (once again) dribble through the defense on the wing, pass the ball to Müller standing on the right post. Müller's heel would find Costa wide open, but the Brazilian's shot would get cleared off the line by a defender. If that had gone in, it could have been Tor des Monats material.

Vidal's strike was impressive but Kingsley Coman is the real hero.

Late runs into the box have been something Bayern Munich have struggled with the last couple years. Sure Schweinsteiger and Alonso would occassionally make them, but for the most part Bayern's only real attacking thrusts came from up top.

Arturo Vidal has changed that as he unleashed another thunderous blast against FC Köln to double Bayern's lead at the Allianz Arena.

Fast forward to the 30-second mark

While Vidal's shot was impressive, threading the narrow space between Dominik Maroh's foot and back, it was the instinctiveness and skill of young Kingsley Coman that made this play so special for Bayern Munich. The 19-year-old is proving that perhaps he should be starting day-in and day-out for Bayern Munich squad as he's had a major hand in both of their goals today.

Only time will tell, but with Douglas Costa having a quiet match and the return of Arjen Robben, there is no better or more important time for Coman to make his statement for a starting spot on this team. And he might just earn it if these performances become the norm.

Arjen Robben finished in cool and collected fashion to give Bayern Munich the lead

Missing for two months and with some doubt as to whether he would start, Arjen Robben made sure everyone knew he was back. Breaking the deadlock against a staunch FC Köln defense, Arjen Robben pounced on one fo the few loose balls conceded in the box.

And Arjen Robben in the box with the ball at his feet is a deadly animal. One touch, putting it out of the range of the onrushing Timo Horn and cooly slotted into the back of the net. It was a goal that would have made Thomas Müller proud.

Given that until this time, Bayern had struggled with how to get Robben the space and time he needed to run at the Köln backline, it was a welcome relief. Bodied up and double teamed whenever he did find himself on the ball, Arjen Robben has spent much of the match moving away from goal. This goal should open up the match.

Arjen Robben and Kingsley Coman return straight to the starting 11 from the injury list.

Against a high flying FC Köln, Pep Guardiola is taking no chances opting to start a high powered offensive lineup as they seek to snag their 10th Bundesliga victory in 10 matches, keeping their already impressive lead in the table intact.

And he's going big starting a 4-man attacking frontline and opting to bring both Arjen Robben and Kingsley Coman straight from the injury list into the starting 11. With Thomas Müller floating in the middle and the whole team guided from deep by the tenacity and physical drive of Arturo Vidal, expect this to be a high octane attacking force.

On the flipside, there could be issues with the counterattack with Vidal as the lone holding midfielder.

Bayern Munich look for their extend their Bundesliga record with a 10th win to start the 2015/2016 season.

After a disappointg mid-week loss to FC Arsenal, Bayern Munich have the change to move one step closer towards European history as they take on FC Köln at the Alianz Arena.

A win for Bayern Munich will take them to new heights with a 10-game winning streak to start the season, extending a Bundesliga record and tying them for second in European history with AS Roma. Along with the potential returns of Arjen Robben and Kingsly Coman, it should be a Bayern Munich fireworks show given the form and class they exude at home.

FC Köln are enjoying a high flying start to their season as well, notching four wins to go along with two draws that find them just outside the Champions League places in the table. Unlike last season's defensive stalwarts, this year's Köln has featured more attacking firepower with Anthony Modeste enjoying a high flying start to the season.

We listen in on and pick out the important stuff from Pep Guardiola's press conference before every game, be it Bundesliga, DFB Pokal, or UEFA Champions League.

After a disappointing, and not entirely deserved loss in the Champions League, it's back to the Bundesliga where FC Bayern Munich are looking to extend their record start to ten consecutive wins. 1. FC Köln is up on Saturday at the Allianz Arena, and they're probably hoping to find a distracted and tired Bayern team (good luck with that).

Anything else interesting going on? Well, I guess the chance to win the 1000th game in the club's Bundesliga history might be considered a big deal. Rumor has it that there will be free beer at the stadium if that happens, so you know the fans are extra motivated.

Pep Guardiola and media director Markus Hörwick sat down for the customary press conference with the sports media representatives.

FC Bayern Press Conference, October 23rd, 2015

Here are the highlights of today's questions and answers (my interjections in italics):

On how well the team has processed the loss to Arsenal - The trip back was longer than the discussion about the game. Whether we win or we lose, we need to forget what happened. Tomorrow is a new opportunity, and different competition, a big opponent. Weiter, immer weiter! (a famous quote by Oliver Kahn, meaning, always keep moving forward).

On the status of Arjen Robben - He hasn't practiced with the team in two weeks, today might be the first time (it was), we'll see and talk to him. If he's fit, he'll be on the roster.

On what makes Köln such an uncomfortable opponent - (Köln has beaten Gladbach and Schalke, and tied Wolfsburg so far, and sits in sixth place) They've had the same coach for the last three or four years, both in the second division and in the Bundesliga. They've done a good job. They play strong and fast with Anthony Modeste and Leonardo Bittencourt (news after the press conference came in that Bittencourt will miss this game with a broken arm). OK, new test, new opportunity.

On rumors that Holger Badstuber will go out on loan to VfB Stuttgart - I've said it before, the club decides on who to buy, sell or loan. But if they're asking my opinion, there is no chance. No chance, he's staying. I need Badstu (I still can't get used to that nickname), I like to work with him. He's still a young player, was starting at center back in the national team at 20 or 21 years old, he's a top player. He needs time, he's been hurt for two years. We only have one central defender, Jerome Boateng. And we have Medhi Benatia, Javi Martinez and Badstuber, we need him. I like working with him, I trust him, he has a special quality for building up play, intelligent player, great person. We've talked with Matthias Sammer, and there's no chance (Hörwick clarifies that there is no truth to the rumors of a loan).

On what the 1000th all-time Bundesliga win would mean to Pep - (The next BL win would be number 1000 for the club, and, not surprisingly, nobody else is even close) One thousand wins shows you how big this club is. It's an anecdote that I happen to be here for this situation. I think, sooner or later, it will happen, I hope it happens tomorrow, but it will happen eventually.

On how Pep expects Köln to line up - The same as Arsenal and Bremen. I don't know right now, I didn't see Köln's practice. Maybe they'll do attacking pressing. We will have to adapt.

On whether Pep gets annoyed when teams put everyone in defense against Bayern - No. We have to be able to deal with it. That's how we play, and we cause that with our build up and our pressure. Maybe some teams would like to attack more, but they can't. In other cases, they just decide to defend deep. Ok. We have to adapt, and be able to attack.

On whether the wing players will be available - It's important. When you have ten players in the penalty box, and you don't have the one-on-one skill, it's almost impossible. Thomas Müller and Robert Lewandowski have problems when we don't have that, so we need them. Today and in the future, one-on-one skill players are the most important. They're hard to find, but the quality of Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery, Kingsley Coman, Mario Götze, Douglas Costa makes a huge difference. We play better with these players.

On the importance of Robben coming back - Of course, Arjen is important for us, not just now, or the last two years, but in the last six, seven, eight years that he's been here. He's great in one-on-one, great mentality, but he's been hurt for a while, and he was hurt for the last three months last season.

On whether Pep is already thinking about Wolfsburg - (Bayern is playing VfL Wolfsburg next Tuesday in the DFB Pokal) I don't have that ability. Women have the ability to handle two things at once, I don't. Only Köln, please. After Olympiakos (in the Champions League), we had a game against Darmstadt, I said that we would rotate, because we had 17 or 18 incredible players. Right now, we have 12, maybe 13 players, so I can't really do that.

On who is definitely missing tomorrow - Coman may return, maybe Arjen too, I don't know. The information from the doctors yesterday was good, but they still need to practice with the team. But, that's it. Sebastian Rode and Javi Martinez aren't available.

On what is ailing Javi Martinez - Javi has a minor issue, but that is what happens when you've been injured for 14 months. After 14 months off, you need six months to get back to perfect. In his case, he has a little tweak here and there, and that's normal.

On Robert Lewandowski winning Tor des Monats (goal of the month) for his fifth score against Wolfsburg - Robert did great against Arsenal as well, fighting hard. Of course, I am happy and he is happy when he's scoring goals, but my opinion of him doesn't depend only on goals.

On whether Pep prefers a pretty goal, or any old goal will do - Every player I've ever met or trained, they don't care, as long as the ball is in the goal.

On Karl-Heinz Rummenigge's criticism of the South American national teams' medical staffs - (Rummenigge called them out this week in Bayern's magazine, specifically Brazil's medical staff, for not sufficiently taking care of injuries to Douglas Costa's foot) Douglas is doing better, and so is Arturo Vidal. I think all the doctors are doing their best for the players, both here and with the national teams, I have no doubt. Maybe they should have treated [Costa] before his flight, but they didn't (Rummenigge mentioned that, at the very least, Costa should have had a compression bandage on his foot before flying back), but that can happen here too.

On whether talks about his successor are affecting his work - Next question, please (delivered with a smile this time).
