I told the players at half-time to calm down and try to do better after the break, which we did partially. But throwing caution to the wind at 4-0 down would have been suicidal. They outclassed us in every department and the gulf in quality was everywhere to be seen.

Guardiola only had praise for Kimmich after his first UEFA Champions League start.

In a Champions League match day that had storylines galore, a notable one slipped under the radar: Joshua Kimmich, as well as Kingsley Coman, made his first UEFA Champions League start of his career. He played all 90 minutes for Bayern Munich in their 5-0 win against Dinamo Zagreb, and manager Pep Guardiola seemed more than satisfied with his performance.

"He played awesome," Guardiola said after the match. "He has absolutely everything a footballer needs. He is very intelligent, very aggressive against the ball, good in shifts, strong with headers, has good eyes, and looks very good where there's free space. He is an awesome player and an awesome acquisition for the future of Bayern München."

According to Opta statistics, Kimmich completed 90 of his 93 passes on Tuesday, including seven of his eight long passes. His five tackles were the most a single Bayern player recorded, and he tied Philipp Lahm with three interceptions.

Kimmich made the move from VfB Stuttgart over the summer after Stuttgart activated his €500,000 buyback clause from RB Leipzig. He was coming off a strong performance with Germany's U21 team in which he quickly supplanted Moritz Leitner as Emre Can's midfield parter. Germany reached the semifinals before losing to Portugal.

His start Tuesday was only his third – his sixth appearance overall – recording just 207 minutes for Bayern this season. He is only 20 years old, but Guardiola is already pumping him up to Germany coach Joachim Löw.

"Jogi Löw has a new option," said Guardiola. "I am sure of it: sooner or later he will be a national team player."

It was another Tor-nado for Bayern Munich as they smash through Dinamo Zagreb to secure their footing at the top of the group. These are the players who really stood out

Tip Of The Cap: Kingsley Coman. The first half of Team CoCo with Douglas Costa, Kingsley Coman continued his surprisingly strong run of play since coming over from Juventus. I say surprising because it isn't often a 19 year old gets to play the full 90 minutes in a Champions League match for a club as big as Bayern Munich. He is still good for at least one or two rookie mistakes (an errant cross here, a turnover there) but even when factoring that in, Coman still played a great game. His ball skills are magical and his tenacity to fight and maintain possession will definitely endear him to Pep Guardiola.

Golf Clap: Douglas Costa. Playing for only 57 minutes before receiving what can only be described as a "mercy sub", Costa put on a display. His speed and skill with the ball at his feet absolutely terrorized the Dinamo defense, as evidenced by the fact that he led Bayern in dribbles. He also managed a whopping 14 crosses. In 57 minutes. No, that's not a typo. His crossing prowess almost certainly induced Dinamo keeper Eduardo to drift to his left which opened the near post for Costa, which he drilled home.

Standing Ovation: Robert Lewandowski. What else can you say about Lewa that hasn't already been said? The big Polish international was at it again today notching three goals and eight shots. He also showed a great chemistry with Mario Götze and Thiago Alcantara moving around in the middle and timing his runs perfectly with their passes. He has certainly found that extra gear Bayern fans have been waiting to see, and there's no reason why it would stop anytime soon.

Meister Of The Match: Thiago Alcantara. Thiago directed the Bayern attack as a conductor directs an orchestra. He had 119 touches and over one hundred passes. He weaved his way through the Dinamo back line with ease, using a deft touch to find his fellow attackers. He completed nine long ball passes, six passes which led to shots on goal and three assists. But most importantly, he looked calm, comfortable and like a leader on the pitch. The story line for this game will certainly center around Robert Lewandowski and his insane goal scoring pace these past three matches, but Thiago was absolutely brilliant in guiding this team to a dominating win.

This Lewandowski guy is pretty good, people.

He is unstoppable! Robert Lewandowski scores his second hat trick in a week's time as unstoppable Bayern Munich steamrolled over Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday in the UEFA Champions League group stage.

Lewandowski scored two goals in the first half and one goal in the second to give him 10 goals in his last three matches. Douglas Costa and Mario Götze also got on the scoresheet as Bayern took a firm grasp of first place in Group F.

Needing a quick start, Bayern came storming out of the gates, players zigging and zagging past Zagreb's inexperienced defense. Douglas and Kingsley Coman terrorized the flanks, wiggling into great positions before unleashing curling balls into the penalty area. A goal opening seemed inevitable, and Douglas found it, beating Dinamo goalkeeper Eduardo to the near post with a sharp shot.

Chances snowballed after that, Bayern overwhelming Dinamo with their class. Teenager Filip Benković looked out of his depth, and his mistake allowed Bayern to go two goals ahead. Thiago Alcântara pounced on a Benković ricochet before selflessly sliding a pass over to Lewandowski for the goal.

Bayern continued playing at top gear, Götze finishing off a give-and-go off the right hand of Eduardo to give Bayern a 3-0 lead. Douglas Costa then picked out Lewandowski moments later on a corner kick, the goal machine rattling a shot off the crossbar and just over the goal line.

Both clubs made defensive changes at halftime, Martínez getting a taste of Champions League football again as Gonçalo relieved Benković for Dinamo. The Plavi advanced out of their half to try to get back into the game, but their best chances came only when Junior Fernandes and Arba Hillel al Soudani used their skill to advance the ball themselves. The open affair allowed Bayern to get forward more effectively, which put Dinamo's distraught defense under more pressure.

The extra space allowed Lewandowski to complete his hat trick. Douglas flicked a ball back to Thiago, who poked the ball to an onside Lewandowski who was splitting Gonçalo and Jérémy Taravel in defense. Lewandowski chipped the ball over Eduardo to seal Bayern's 5-0 victory.

Bayern now take an 8-0 goal record to their match against Arsenal, who lost 3-2 at home to Olympiacos. The Rekordmeister lead Group F of the Champions League group stage with six points, possessing the best goal differential through two rounds.

Instant Analysis

My goodness, Mr. Lewandowski. There is no player on the planet in better form than Bayern's No. 9. His first goal may have come from a fortunate mistake, but his movement was clinical throughout the match. The interesting thing about this performance was how he had a tad more acreage to roam with Götze playing behind him rather than Thomas Müller. Müller is a player who can draw more attention away from Lewandowski, but Lewandowski's different playing relationship between the two could lead to a mid-match tactical adjustment Guardiola can make.

One of the best things to see from Bayern this season is their interplay in attack. Even though many of these players have never played together before, they link together extremely well. It may be the reason Guardiola is more inclined to field just two central midfielders and keep players forward in attack. The attacking skill is also another excuse for Guardiola to play less defenders if the opponent will allow it.

Playing David Alaba and Joshua Kimmich was a risky tactic, even though Dinamo Zagreb had now way to punish Bayern for it. Both have skill on the ball and can switch the play effectively, but that is a soft part of the spine Bayern cannot get away with on a regular basis. Kimmich is the type of No. 6 Guardiola wants, but the jury is still out on whether Bayern can lean on his defensive attributes.

The battle for the Champions League continues at the Allianz Arena. This time, Dinamo Zagreb visits Bayern Munich.

The return of the UEFA Champions League to the Allianz Arena means that Bayern Munich are back on the warpath with three points on their mind. This time, the opponent is Croatian superpower Dinamo Zagreb.

On paper, this is a win for FC Bayern; however, anything is possible once both teams take the field. Zagreb showed during the first matchday in their match against Arsenal, that they are not to be doubted. Their big win over the Londoners showed that they mean business and won't back down from a big name.

It's expect that Pep Guardiola is going to have to call up a few players from Bayern II to the first team in order to fill out the squad for the match due to injuries. However, with an attacking four of Robert Lewandowski, Mario Götze, Thomas Müller and Douglas Costa, all of those subs may not be necessary.

This match is mostly a tune-up for Bayern ahead of the return of Der Klassiker on Sunday against Borussia Dortmund, but overlooking Dinamo Zagreb will not be something that Guardiola will allow his team to do.

We listen in on and pick out the important stuff from Pep Guardiola's press conference before every game, be it Bundesliga, DFB Pokal, or UEFA Champions League.

It's the first Champions League home game of the season for FC Bayern Munich, and Dinamo Zagreb is in town. The perennial Croatian champions (they won the last ten championships in a row) will look to build on a surprising home win against mighty Arsenal, but they know that Bayern. Especially in Munich, is on a different level.

Pep Guardiola and media director Markus Hörwick sat down for the customary press conference with the sports media representatives.

FC Bayern Press Conference, September 28th, 2015

Here are the highlights of today's questions and answers (my interjections in italics):

On the injury status of players other than the ones missing long-term - We have, I think, 14 or 15 players for tomorrow. We need to call up two players from the reserves. I don't think Arturo Vidal will be available (knee issue, apparently picked up in Mainz). Sebastian Rode has had some problems for the last few days as well. I haven't talked to them yet, but I've talked to the doctors.

On Arjen Robben's availability, maybe for the weekend - No. Right now, I don't know. I don't think so, but I don't know. Every day, I have a conversation with my doctors and physios, and every day we analyze the situation for the players. We have 14 players, and on Wednesday, we'll see.

On whether Pep was surprised about the Arsenal loss in Zagreb - Normally, you would assume that Arsenal would win. But when you watch the game, you notice why Zagreb won. They're a very defensive team, are organized in the back, fast on the outsides, also up front, very physical and very aggressive, not a lot of room to attack or even think. For example, Mainz was a zone marking team, Zagreb uses man-to-man. They're a good team, it's Champions League. They haven't lost in 45 games (29 wins, 16 draws), enough said. But it's a big opportunity for us, our goal is to have six points, so we can prepare for Arsenal, and be in a good position in the group. To qualify, you need to win your three home games, and win an away game. We already took care of the away win.

On whether having Douglas Costa and Kingsley Coman in place of the injured Robben and Franck Ribery was a lesson from last season - Yes. If you see our first and third goals in Mainz, it was from one-on-one situations from our wings. Last season, in the most important part of the season, that wasn't possible. I hope that Arjen and Franck can return as soon as possible, because having four wings with that kind of one-on-one skill is very important.

On Costa and Coman replacing Ribery and Robben at some time in the future - I think Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery still have something to show us. I think they still have a lot of time to play here, to show very big performances. But it's good for Bayern Munich that they got two young players with that kind of skill, it's not easy to find that kind of quality. The club did a great job, with Michael Reschke, and, of course, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, and Matthias Sammer. But, it's not like we have these new players, and the other ones are done. No. I hope that Costa and Coman can reach the level of Robben and Ribery at this club.

On how he wants Douglas Costa to improve - We knew that Douglas was a great player in terms of assists. He's very unselfish. But he has to think about how important it is for the team, and for him, to have the mentality of wanting to score goals. That's the next stage of his development. I know it's harder for him on the left, where he plays on the sideline, and crosses in, but when he's on the right, he has the ability to go to the inside and score goals. But he's still young, at 25 years old, he still has time to develop (that's a scary thought for defenders).

On whether David Alaba is back to his normal self, after the long injury - When someone is hurt for two or three months, they usually need some time to get back. David needs less time, but he still needs time. In my time here, his level is always high, and it doesn't matter where he plays, he's always insanely good. Of course, he is one of the most important players on the team. With him, we can play different systems. Last season, in the last two months, I really missed him.

On whether Javi Martinez is ready to start against Zagreb - He already started in Mainz. His knee reacted very well to the last game, he experienced no pain. But, we can't forget how long his injury was, and we have to analyze whether he can play three games in a week.

On Kinglsey Coman's confidence - (In his first press conference, when he was introduced, Coman confidently said he was there to make a difference). It's good to have confidence, but he has to continue to learn, and deal with his teammates, he has to learn and get better. I like when the forwards are confident. If they lose the ball, they try again, lose the ball, try again. That's what I like from our wings. If you have a chance to take on a player one-on-one, you have to do it. If you lose it, ok, you have to chase it down.

On why Bayern plays so differently in the first and the second halves - I don't know. I would like to score goals in the first half, but I don't know the reason. It's a new development for us. Maybe the opponent is more tired, but I don't think that's the reason, because all the teams in Germany are fit. In Mainz, they ran until the very end, put us under pressure. They ran five or six kilometers more than us. Maybe there's more space in the second half for us to play, but I don't know.
