Good sign.

Fox Sports has announced that the Matchday 4 clash between Bayern Munich vs Augsburg set records in the United States of America. The match was viewed by 926,000 on the Fox network, making it the most viewed Bundesliga match in history in the States.

We discussed previously how the ratings in America hasn't been as high as many fans would like, but one would have to remember that Fox was basically starting from scratch on television. Gol TV has been relegated to obscurity over the last several years, so only a tiny number even had access to legally watch games.

While the numbers for the Bayern and Augsburg match were fantastic, don't expect to see similar numbers on Fox Sports 1 or 2 any time soon. The Bundesliga is still working to gain traction in the states, and it must be said that Fox has done a tremendous job with their coverage so far.

Oh well.

Bayern Munich were awarded a controversial penalty at the end of their match with Augsburg. In a tie game, Douglas Costa went down relatively easy in the penalty area, and referee Knut Kircher awarded a penalty to Bayern. Thomas Müller stepped up and converted the penalty. Bayern won 2-1.

Now, Sport 1's Christian Ortlepp is quoting Mr. Kircher as saying he made a mistake. "Reuter and Weinzierl both spoke to me. I apologised. Sorry Augsburg!"

The general consensus seems to be that this was not a penalty. It is odd that in the heat of the moment the referee and the assistant referee both deemed it to be a penalty. Replays showed the assist referee raising his flag for a penalty at nearly the exact same moment that Kircher is about to blow his whistle. Either way, the penalty was unquestionably soft.

Either way, the apology does nothing for Augsburg, as they now sit with only one point after their first four league matches.

A tight match in the Allianz against Bayern's recent nemesis yielded plenty of performances worthy of recognition

Tip Of The Cap: Thiago Alcantara. Look up the definition of Box To Box Player in Miriam-Webster's little known Soccer Dictionary and you'll see a picture of a smiling well coiffed Thiago. He successfully dribbled, crossed and long-balled the Augsburg defense for 90 minutes and fired off four shots as well inducing a great save from Marwin Hitz. It may not have been the most noticeable performance, but he was a big part of the Bayern attack without sacrificing any of his defensive responsibilities.

Golf Clap: Douglas Costa. You can debate the merits of his penalty inducing dive at the end of the game, but you can't deny that he did anything and everything he possibly could to find that late go ahead goal. He's been clocked as fast as 21 Kph on the pitch and that blazing speed showed in full force constantly harassing the Augsburg back line. He had a team high three successful crosses and had several more crosses that were well marked by Augsburg but nonetheless dangerous. Despite Augsburg's astute last ditch defending, Costa kept working and fighting for the winning goal.

Standing Ovation: Marwin Hitz. The 28 year old Augsburg keeper was absolutely stellar between the sticks. His first big save came Robert Lewandowski header from close range that is surely a goal 99 times out of 100. After that, he only got better turning aside shot after shot from a Bayern attack which generated 27 shots, 10 of them needed to be saved by Hitz. The vast majority of this game was played in the Augsburg side of the pitch, as evidenced by the fact that Hitz led his team in touches with 58. Augsburg for the most part was completely outplayed, but the only reason they were even close was thanks to Marwin Hitz's brilliance.

Meister Of The Match: Robert Lewandowski. It's easy to look at this award and think that it is only due to him getting the equalizer, but he contributed much more to this game. Bayern struggled to solve the Augsburg defensive strategy, but Lewandowski still managed to have eight total shots, five of them on goal. And just for fun, he completed 95% of his passes as well. For a while It looked as if Hitz would be the kryptonite to Lewa's Superman, but eventually he found a way through. In the 77th minute he absolutely bullied the Augsburg defense in a great display of skill, strength and overall tenacity.

Bayern Munich come from behind to beat Augsburg 2-1 in the Bavarian Derby.

Bayern Munich received a late penalty from Thomas Müller to beat Augsburg 2-1 in the Bavarian Derby at the Allianz Arena.

The opening salvo of the match fell to Bayern. Xabi Alonso's corner kick was headed on by Robert Lewandowski. The ball set up tantalizingly at the back post, and Thomas Müller was only inches away from poking it over the goal line. Even without the goal, the message was clear: Bayern was here to win today.

Thiago Alcantara nearly put FC Bayern ahead in the 20th minute with a powerful header. David Alaba whipped in a cross from wide left, but Marwin Hitz made an excellent save to deny Thiago the opening goal. A little later, Müller tried an audacious backheel on a cross from Douglas Costa that he didn't fully connect with.

Unfortunately, all of those near misses aren't good enough when you're playing a team with Augsburg's quality. Koo Ja-cheol played a give and go with Raul Bobadilla into the FC Bayern box. Ja-cheal flicked the ball into the way of Alexander Esswein who unleashed a rocket from only a few yards out. Manuel Neuer was left with zero chance.

Kingsley Coman made his debut for Bayern in the 55th minute. He came on for Arturo Vidal who struggled in the middle of the field on the day. It was a big opportunity for the young French winger to show just what he could do.

After a lot of struggling to break down the Augsburg defense, Bayern finally found their equalizer in the 77th minute. Müller's shot from the left somehow made it through the hands of Hitz. Lewandowski was on hand to smash the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-1.

In stoppage time, Douglas Costa cut past Feulner and was knocked to the ground. A penalty was called, and Müller converted the spot kick to give FC Bayern the 2-1 lead and victory.

Instant Analysis

For all of their possession and crosses in the first half, Bayern couldn't seem the find the final touch throughout the first half. Müller and Lewandowski came close on multiple occasions

Esswein's goal was a fantastic bit of team play by Augsburg mixed in with some poor defending from Bayern. Alonso was caught ball watching, and Vidal was slow to react leaving Esswein wide open to unleash a rocket.

Arturo Vidal wasn't have a great game in the middle of the park for Bayern, and Pep Guardiolabrought him off in favor of Kingsley Coman before the hour mark. Yes, Bayern have the midweek game in Greece, but Vidal must play better.

Bayern's goal was a bit fortunate, even if "deserved". Müller's shot never should've made it through the hands of Hitz for Lewandowski to easily score. Still, a goal is a goal.

You can argue the penalty all day long, but the referee and assistant referee both immediately called for it. There was zero doubt in their mind.

Overall, the performance was rather poor from Bayern on the day. They'll be hoping to put together a better match against Olympiacos midweek in the Champions League.
