Quotes

Pep Guardiola

"We started well and stopped them getting at us on the break. We tried everything but without Franck and Arjen it was tough. In the second half we played with too much heart and not enough head. Gladbach did very well. We didn't lose due to Manu but because we had problems in attack. It's the Bundesliga and people think it's always easy, but I know how difficult it is. We'll analyse the game and after the international break we'll get back to winning ways."

Manuel Neuer

"Gladbach were very good and defended excellently. We didn't create any genuine chances. That wasn't good enough. Obviously we wanted to do much better and we've missed a chance because Wolfsburg dropped points today. But it won't darken our mood. We know what we're aiming for this season. We'll look to the future and we're optimistic."

Lucien Favre (Gladbach coach)

"We played very well. It was important we defended so well. Bayern were outstanding for 20, 25 minutes and it was hard for us as we hardly ever had possession. Then we scored a rather lucky goal. The second half was better. We played our football and found good solutions. But it's only a single game and three points, and it's already in the past."

Max Eberl (Gladbach sporting director)

"It was a six-pointer. We've been very consistent since the winter break. Taking three points in Munich does you the world of good."

Martin Stranzl (Gladbach captain)

"We'd been planning to defend higher up the field. We kept our cool and waited for our chance, and ultimately we've done very well. At the start Robben pulled us this way and that, but it was a lot more comfortable after that. We worked very hard on our tactics before the match. Lucien Favre drummed it into every player, and that carried over into the team."

Patrick Herrmann (Gladbach midfielder)

"We played really well, even if Bayern had more of the ball. Otherwise we kept getting at them on the break and that's how we scored our goals today."

Bayern Munich played very well against Borussia Mönchengladbach, but like their October meeting it was the Foals who executed their gameplan better, going home as 2-0 victors.

When Bayern Munich drew 0-0 against Borussia Mönchengladbach in October it was the first match where an opposition side out executed Bayern Munich and prevented the Bavarians from employing their gameplan. As with all things Gladbach, it was a strategy built around solid positioning, patience and hitting on the counter. In that match it was the central partnership of Cristoph Kramer and Granit Xhaka who took apart Bayern Munich's midfield game, with the former enjoying a truly breakout performance.

Borussia Mönchengladbach is Bayern Munich's boogeyman under Pep Guardiola. Their defensive game is built around spatial containment, not a physical approach like so many Bundesliga sides. Their biggest strength is mitigating the very thing that Bayern Munich attacks in other sides with their focus on zone overloads and through balls. If Bayern Munich were going to respond to the strength of Gladbach in Sunday's clash they were going to be need to change up from their default strategy just like in the match at Borussia Park.

In that vein, Bayern Munich went aerial attack heavy. It was very similar match to the clash in October match but on Sunday Bayern moved in with a diversified approach. On the night they attempted 26 crosses from both flanks while simultaneously approaching the box from all directions, attempting 105 chipped passes from all sides. In their first meeting Bayern Munich also played well, yet used a cross heavy attack rather then a diversified aerial plan. Like that match though they were unable to find a way through the Gladbach defense.

While they generated 16 shots, half of which were in the box, yet again it was a dominant performance from Kramer and Xhaka that saw them cut off the center of the pitch while Martin Stranzl and Alvaro Dominguez cleared most of the Bayern Munich aerial attack. The Gladbach centerbacks and Tony Jantscke on the right accounted for 26 clearances all game, similar to the 21 that Stranzl and Dominguez accounted for in the October meeting. Add on top of that the performance from the rock solid Yann Sommer and you have the tools to resist Bayern Munich for 90 minutes once again.

On the reverse side, it was once again Bayern Munich's weakness on the counter that undid them. In the October meeting, it was Manuel Neuer who stood on his head to deny some of 'Gladbach's best chances, but here it was Neuer's turn to flub two saves we've seen him make countless times before.

There's not much to be ashamed about from this game for Bayern Munich. While Pep Guardiola is in charge and Bayern Munich's attacking tactics are designed around possession and sustained pressure, this is always going to be their most difficult matchup of the season. Lucien Favre's too good of a coach for it not to happen and he has an excellent side built around tactics that happen to mitigate Bayern Munich's best abilities. In a way sometimes these games happen.

Don't expect to see too many Bayern players in this weeks awards section as Gladbach came into Allianz and had their way.

Tip Of The Cap: Bastian Schweinsteiger. There were not too many performances from Bayern to choose from, but Basti very quietly had himself a pretty good game. Playing out wide in a 4-3-3, he was very responsible with the ball at his feet completing 93 percent of his passes and was five of six on his long ball attempts. He also tracked back well defensively, leading the team in tackles and made a few timely interceptions to prevent the Gladbach counter. All in all, in a game where Bayern struggled in the final third of the pitch, Bastian played a strong, mistake free game

Golf Clap: Raffael. I'm not usually a fan of results driven awards. For example, just because somebody happened to score two goals doesn't necessarily mean they played a strong game. However, when those two goals are against a squad like Bayern Munich, and the match is at the Allianz Arena, if you are able to notch a brace, you deserve some recognition. Sure his goals came off of two pretty bad gaffes by Manuel Neuer, but the fact remains that he was in position to get a solid strike on the ball in the first place. That's all you can ask, and Raffael delivered big time.

Standing Ovation: Martin Stranzl. The ageless 34-year-old Austrian international deserves special recognition for his work in organizing the Gladbach defense. Really, the entire back line from Gladbach deserves a standing ovation, but it was Stranzl who led the charge. He led his team in tackles with seven and had a pretty impressive nine clearances. Much of the Bayern attack tried to come through the middle, and Stranzl really made them work for every chance they had. He also completed 83 percent of his passes coming out of his own end to start a few counter attacks.

Meister Of The Match: Yann Sommer. The 26-year-old Swiss keeper did his best Neuer impression as he often played outside his box trying to push the Gladbach counter. Aside from his sweeper keeping, Yann Sommer was huge, both literally and figuratively for Gladbach. He anticipated the shooting angles for many of Bayern's attempts, positioning himself perfectly to make saves, and he also had a brilliant double-save late in the game to preserve the two goal lead. I am not a fan of results driven awards, the man kept a clean sheet against arguably the best team in the world in their own back yard. That in and of itself is worthy of a place on this list. The fashion in which he did it gives him the top spot.

The goalkeeping god is fallible.

Bayern Munich couldn't stop Borussia Mönchengladbach and lost at home for the first time this season. In a battle of the two best defensive teams in the Bundesliga, Raffael scored a brace to lead Gladbach to their biggest win of the season.

FCB started strong in the match, jumping out to control the match by possessing the ball. Gladbach were content to sit back with two banks for four and strike on the counter. Strike on the counter, they did.

The hosts seemed to be cruising until a scary moment for Bayern in the first half. Arjen Robben had to be removed from the match after a bad tackle from Tony Jantschke. Robben was subbed out and eventually left the arena for scans.

Half an hour of dominance means nothing when the opposition score first. In one of their few forays into Bayern's side of the field in the first half, Gladbach scored a goal that never should have been. Raffael shot the ball from the top of the penalty area at Manuel Neuer. The ball was low and fast but easily savable. Neuer reached down to pick up the ball, but it bounced off of him and slipped across the goal line.

That's right. You read it correctly. Manuel Neuer made a mistake. Even deities are allowed one mistake every now and then.

Bayern would end the first half with nearly two-thirds possession but unable to find the key that would unlock Gladbach's defense.

Gladbach started coming back into the match in the second half and started to test the Bayern defense even more with crisp counter attacks. Neuer was called upon to make multiple saves to keep Gladbach's lead at only one.

Then, another counter caused another goal. Christoph Kramer led the attack into Bayern's third of the field before feeding a perfect pass to Raffael. His shot struck the back of the net after going under a diving Neuer to make it 2-0 to Gladbach. While nothing is guaranteed, Neuer should've done better with this shot.

Bayern pressed forward and had several opportunities in the remaining thirteen minutes to score, but Gladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer was more than up to the task on the day. The Swiss goalkeeper made several fantastic saves and outshown his positional counterpart on the day.

With Wolfsburg drawing earlier in the day, Bayern's lead at the top of the Bundesliga falls to ten points. Now, Bayern head off into the international break before returning to the field at Signal Iduna Park where they face Borussia Dortmund on April 4.

The Dutchman leaves in the first half for the second time in three matches

Bayern Munich revealed Sunday Arjen Robben has an abdominal tear. The club expects him to be out for several weeks.

As one would guess, Robben has officially opted out of the Netherlands call-up he received late last week. The Oranje are set to take on Turkey in an UEFA Euro Qualifier before a World Cup rematch against Spain in an international friendly.

–

Arjen Robben left Bayern Munich's match against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Sunday after 24 minutes with what appeared to be an injury. The winger then reportedly left Allianz Arena around halftime of the match.

Robben remained on the turf after M'Gladbach's Tony Jantschke fouled him early in the match. Manager Pep Guardiola brought Thomas Müller on to replace him, and Robben left the field under his own power.

His departure is the second in Bayern's last three matches in the first half. The 31-year-old left Bayern's Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk with a pinched nerve in his back.

The club has yet to report on any injury on Sunday. The Dutch international is supposed to join his teammates in the coming week to take on Turkey in the UEFA Euro qualifiers and Spain in an international friendly. Whether he suits up in orange or not will depend on the diagnosis.

Robben is Bayern's leading scorer this season, and is second only to Eintracht Frankfurt's Alexander Meier in the Bundesliga. He has dealt with injury issues each of the last three seasons, and Bayern will certainly feel his absence once the fixture list picks up in April.
