Everything has come to a head for the Bavarians. Will the Portuguese superstar stick around for the rebuild?

Bayern Munich’s crushing loss to RB Leipzig has left players and fans in stunned disbelief. It’s a hard one to take, especially for veteran mainstays of the team, like through-and-through Bavarian Thomas Müller.

Still, it’s time for everyone to chin up and give their all. And don’t think loan player João Cancelo doesn’t have his heart in it. While his home club Manchester City are on the verge of confirming a sensational Premier League comeback, the Portuguese fullback has become a regular in Thomas Tuchel’s XI and sharing fully in the joys and miseries of the Rekordmeister’s season.

Cancelo took to Instagram after the match:

Though his status for next season remains up in the air, Cancelo is looking — and sounding — more and more like a guy who could stay in Bavaria next season.

Here’s to some good days together then, for Cancelo and his Bayern teammates.

Bayern had their eyes on the Meisterschale, but Leipzig were here to burst their bubble.

Tip your hats to the visitors. RB Leipzig came in to the Allianz Arena unfazed and delivered a stunning eleventh-hour blow to Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga title hopes. The visitors’ joyous reactions after the match were captured by FCBayern.com:

“Bayern weren’t much better than us. We know how we won,” said Leipzig head coach Marco Rose. “We felt at half-time that we could do a number of things better. We lost balls too easily in the first half, were lax with the ball. We wanted to be more compact, add more intensity, but also knew there was something in this for us today. With the counter for the equaliser, belief grew that we had them, and we took that. It was a great performance from us.”

“The second half was much better,” agreed captain Willi Orban. “We were braver, had more pressure on the ball, lots of turnovers and then scored good goals. We knew we had to change something at the break – full-backs higher up the field and defending the attacking midfielder higher. That meant we won the ball and then finished the attacks. We obviously had some luck with the penalties, but when you look at the second half, we deserved to win.”

Finally, it was none other than incoming Bayern midfielder Konrad Laimer who delivered the dagger to the heart — the equalizer that seemed to crash the house of cards down. Et tu, Konrad?

“We didn’t start the game well. You saw how well Bayern can play when there’s something on the line for them,” Laimer said. “But we then got our chances. We said at half-time that we had to stay calm on the ball. We got chances, took them and definitely aren’t undeserved winners. We really grew up in the second half, matured and allowed them very little.”

This time next year, hopefully, Laimer will be delivering vintage performances with a different “we” after the match.

From top to bottom, Bayern Munich needs to analyze how things got this bad.

Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidžić still insists that the decision to sack Julian Nagelsmann back in March was the proper call at the proper time.

“All decisions were made to the best of our knowledge and belief for FC Bayern. I’m doing my job 24/7 and always trying to do my best. When you see what kind of team we had before the start of the season — it’s surprising to me too that we might not win any title this season,” Salihamidžić told Sky (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “We looked at it for a long time and were of the opinion that we had to act. Thomas Tuchel needs the preparation (preseason) with the team, then everything will be better.”

Will it, though?

Tuchel has a long history of grating on players and this roster has some unhappy players, some ill-fitting players, some veterans being squeezed out, and some who really do not fit into what the future of the club looks like.

This is not a turnkey solution for any coach, let alone one who is still grasping at straws on how to get the best out of this group two months into his tenure.

Regardless, the sporting director came away from the match perplexed and unable to figure out where things went wrong.

“I was very optimistic. It was a very good training week, we had a good intensity and we improved. We did a lot of things right this week. After half an hour we didn’t show much today. It was very disappointing,” Salihamidžić said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “I’ve always preferred to have it in our own hands, that’s no longer the case. Now we have to hope, cross our fingers, win our game next week and see what happens.”

Extra thoughts:

Thomas Tuchel’s line-up and subs are nearly unchanged from the previous game, a rousing victory over Schalke. However: the exclusion of an energetic Leroy Sané (in favor of Leon Goretzka and a reversion to 4-2-3-1) looks like a serious mistake.

Thomas Müller was his usual quick-thinking self, directing his teammates around him to press Leipzig’s build-up. But in front of goal? Not enough, and it’s unfortunate again given the position he was tasked with.

Noussair Mazraoui maybe didn't deserve a 5, though he wasn’t his usual influential self. If anyone deserved a 5, it wasn’t any individual player but perhaps the coach.

How did Bayern go for such long stretches, yet again, without looking threatening? A lot of soul searching to be done in the offseason.

How’s that for a storybook ending?

Bayern Munich fans are finding themselves glued to the screen for Borussia Dortmund games these days. Thanks to the Rekordmeister’s travails, Bayern have needed more than the usual amount of help from their rivals to win a tight Bundesliga title race.

The last few times it’s happened, BVB have obliged. But Bayern’s penultimate matchday collapse to RB Leipzig may finally prove one calamity too many.

What a turn this season has made. Last July, these two teams met for the season’s inaugural competitive fixture — the DFL-Supercup. For Bayern, questions swirled. Robert Lewandowski’s transfer window departure and last season’s Champions League exit were still fresh in the memory. How would Bayern find ways to score? Would Thomas Müller thrive without his usual partner in attack?

No problem, as it turned out. The Bavarians smashed Leipzig 5-3, with the losing side's goals largely coming in the game's quiet moments, the result having long been decided. Leipzig coach Domenico Tedesco could only be resigned to the sheer power of the indomitable record champions — among his post-game laments the now memorable refrain: “The arrows come from everywhere.”

Tedesco wouldn’t even last to October, but his Bayern counterpart Julian Nagelsmann was just getting started. Or so it seemed. Nagelsmann was sacked in March after a Rückrunde run of poor results culminated in a loss to Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen. At the time, Bayern trailed Dortmund but had Der Klassiker next on the schedule, a chance to right things which they emphatically took under new coach Thomas Tuchel.

And ex-Dortmund coach Marco Rose had been installed to the post at Leipzig.

Rose’s first brush with the Bavarian machine — in the midst of a run that saw them blank Champions League stalwarts FC Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain by turn — came in January. It was the return to competitive action for Bayern after a tumultuous winter, filled with injuries, drama, and World Cup heartbreak. It would also be the first of three straight 1-1 draws to start the Rückrunde, early warning signs for Nagelsmann's fracturing job security.

Those warnings went unheeded, but maybe they shouldn't have been. Bayern’s display was the sort that had plagued them all season long. The arrow-raining goals machine had long been sputtering; this was now a team that seemed content to claw their way to one and then surrender control. Bayern carried a 1-0 lead into half-time; Leipzig’s Marcel Halstenberg equalized early in the second.

A taste of Bayern’s own medicine.

Leipzig would do much, much better at the second time of asking.

Backed against the wall, needing a result — usually this is the time for the Bavarians to shine. Instead they continued in their usual way. Serge Gnabry’s super strike was a moment of sparkling quality, yet it only seemed to pave the way to complacency. It was Leipzig that demonstrated mentality, peppering Bayern with a few chances before the break. Yet neither that nor Tuchel’s half-time address could lift the team out of their stupor.

Where Leipzig had intent, Bayern’s second-half display was typically desultory. They would be punished soon enough, through the efforts of an incoming Bayern player to boot.

Usually it’s incoming transfers who have to adapt to Bavarian standards of excellence; after this result, there’s the sense that the Bayern locker could learn a thing or two from Konrad Laimer. The midfielder, Julian Nagelsmann’s long-desired “pressing machine”, won the ball himself after a set piece, led a very familiar-looking charge — arrows down all sides — and finished the sequence himself after Christopher Nkunku’s cutback was deflected.

Even that wasn’t enough. A draw already flung the door open to Dortmund, but Bayern had one more of the season’s greatest hits to replay: the double penalty. In the loss that would mark the end of Nagelsmann’s tenure, two Leverkusen penalties after an early Bayern goal sealed the result. A reprise was only fitting. Leipzig had their three goals again, matching their Supercup output. This time, Bayern could only muster the one.

Searing questions about over the direction and future of this Bayern Munich squad. Where is the mentality? The determination? The patterns have now recurred far too many times to suppose they are blips. And they’ve happened, repeatedly, under both coaches.

Dortmund’s 3-0 triumph at Augsburg on Sunday, achieved without potentially Real Madrid-bound Jude Bellingham, may augur a shift in the balance of Bundesliga power. Could it be a two-horse race going forward? These aren’t the BVBers of years past, the ones who would seemingly refuse to take every offering Bayern made. If Bayern want to reverse the trend, to seize the reins once again…well, it would be good to start at some point.

The season isn’t over yet, but the Bayern that began the campaign look well and truly gone. It’s been a storybook season, alright. Only the story was a nightmare.

In every big game this season, Bayern Munich have been a total flop.

Thomas Tuchel must answer for this

No one can blame a “lack of familiarity” for this kind of result.

Bayern Munich dominated the first half, yes. Scored a goal, which is great! But football games last longer than 45 or 70 mins, you need to be better than that. Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern side do NOT play good football for any consistent amount of time. You can see that the squad has potential — over 180 mins versus Manchester City, Bayern were able to match them for almost half the phases and actually took the initiative on occasion. But under Tuchel, that’s all we ever see.

Momentum isn’t maintained — it’s always surrendered. Pressure is nonexistent. Set pieces turn into counters for the opposition. The end of each half is a total [word deleted by editor]. 1-0 is the most dangerous scoreline. Comebacks never happen. The mentality is so poor.

In terms of actual tactical problems we’ve seen under Tuchel this season, you have the following:

Gegenpressing: It was already relatively poor under Julian Nagelsmann, but now it’s just non-existent. Bayern Munich cannot create a turnover until the opponent is already in the final third and bearing down on goal. Last-minute interventions by Kimmich or the CBs are what count as “pressing” in this team. Compare that to Flick’s Bayern. Against Barcelona (for example) the team was a dedicated unit, knowing how to pressure and win the ball back HIGH up the pitch. Where has that gone?

Midfield control: Leon Goretzka has no role under Thomas Tuchel, but always plays. He hasn’t magically turned into a bad player, but he’s always deployed in the no-man’s-land between Kimmich and the attack, where he’s not allowed to do anything of note. This current role wastes his physicality and doesn’t play to any of his strengths, like ball carrying or late runs into the box. If Tuchel really wants a player like that, why play a 4-2-3-1 at all? Switch to a 4-1-4-1 like the Schalke game.

Set pieces: This is a whole can of worms. Deserves its own section, really.

What’s next for Bayern? Tuchel seems to be the wrong guy. Hire Xabi I guess? Or bring back Nagelsmann? They’re still paying him.

Jamal Musiala is being held back from greatness

What is it with coaches putting Jamal Musiala in the middle? The guy is a decent attacking midfielder, but far from spectacular. He’s too slight to win physical duels, and easily gets bullied off the ball when teams defend in numbers. Yet Julian Nagelsmann, Hansi Flick (at the World Cup), and now Thomas Tuchel have all put him in that position to his incredible detriment.

Photo by CHRISTOF STACHE/POOL/AFP via Getty Images

Remember when this was a thing?

When Musiala first made a breakthrough in Bayern’s lineup, it wasn’t by playing in midfield. He played on the wing, mainly on the left (but sometimes the right) and he was AMAZING. The guy is like Ribery 2.0, his silky dribbles can confound any defender. And when he plays on the wings, he gets the support from the fullback and doesn’t need to get into charged physical duels all the time.

When did this aspect of his game get forgotten? Is there a directive coming from somewhere, telling coaches that Musiala HAS to play in the middle or not at all? Today, we saw Serge Gnabry played on the left to accommodate a formation that used Musiala as an AM and Thomas Muller as a striker, despite the fact that Gnabry’s been in sublime form playing in the middle lately. Why? It’s horrible for his game and Musiala’s as well. Just doesn’t make any sense.

At this point you have to wonder how the club is planning long-term at each position. Forcing round pegs into square holes worked ONCE, when Kimmich replaced Lahm. That lightning won’t strike twice.

Set pieces are worse than ever

At this point, you have to take Kimmich off them. When you have Joao Cancelo and Noussair Mazraoui on the squad, why force one guy to take them? Even Sane is pretty decent at these deliveries. Kimmich barely even gets it in the right place most of the time.

Come on, this cannot be this complicated. Get some tall players in the box, send the ball in near them, and keep a couple fast players outside the box to intercept any potential counters.

How does Bayern Munich fail to something so SIMPLE? You don’t need a billion dollars and Pep Guardiola to head it in from a corner. And so much of it comes back to Joshua Kimmich. He’s an AMAZING player, but why does he get to do what he wants? Shouldn’t someone else be given a go after this many failed deliveries?

This goes back to a wider narrative about Joshua Kimmich and his place at the club. He’s protected from consequences. His bad games never get punished like other players. Competition gets shipped out because he demands 100% of every minute available. He won’t dare let a coach sub him off. He wears the captain’s armband already. In some ways, he’s deserved a ton of consideration, but it has to stop somewhere.

In the previous iterations of Bayern Munich, the seniors always lost their spots from time to time. Arjen Robben spent most of the treble year on the bench, only coming back when Kroos got injured. Jerome Boateng was often in and out of the lineup, competing with Niklas Sule and Mats Hummels. Thiago competed with Vidal and Alonso, and later Kimmich and Goretzka for his midfield spot. To this day, coaches bench Thomas Muller as soon as he has a less than stellar game.

Where are the consequences for Joshua Kimmich? It’s not even like we’re asking for him to be sent to the stands. He’s still playing well. But ... just take the corners away from him. If you can’t even do that as a coach, then you may as well put his name on the stadium because he’s bigger than the club already.

Miscellaneous observations

Irony is great. Imagine if Konrad Laimer ends up killing Bayern’s title hopes this season.

The new kits are hideous. Bayern looked and played like Arsenal.

For the first time, the pitch at the Allianz Arena looked acceptable! Baby steps.

Fans leaving the stadium early shows that the fanbase is really done with this team. There’s so little goodwill here.

Handball rules are truly wack.

This was not supposed to end that way for Bayern Munich.

Jersey Swap: Konrad Laimer

There is absolutely no surprise or debate involved in this award for those who watched the game. As someone who has advocated for future Bayern Munich midfielder Konrad Laimer time and again, let me reemphasize: he is a machine at midfield. Not a single player for Leipzig worked as hard as the Austrian did tonight. Relentlessly pursuing every Bayern player in possession and initiating some of the best duels tonight, Laimer has proven himself to be worthy of his position at Bayern when he arrives in June.

Der Kaiser: Matthijs de Ligt

The last 30 minutes of the game were among the most embarrassing moments a Bayern fan could ever face. Laimer essentially steamrolled the entire Bayern defense and midfield and pointed out every incompetence the team has. However, even in these dark times, Matthijs de Ligt was probably the only bright spit. Quite frankly speaking, De Ligt has done pretty much everything right since his arrival here. He might be the only undisputed starter at centre-back, and with good reason. Slick passing, a low reaction time and work rate required to be a centre-back for Bayern are just some of the qualities he possesses. Most of his potential as an attacking centre-back remain untapped and one can only wonder what’s next if the right setup and circumstances arise for the Dutchman to level his game further up.

Der Fußballgott: Joshua Kimmich

I truly and seriously wish I could not give Joshua Kimmich the award. Then again, the situation warrants it.

Kimmich is a wonderful player, there’s no doubt about it. I’m often his biggest fan and have no negative comments about his work. However, as far as today’s game was concerned, it is clear that Kimmich was not enough. He may be a brilliant player, but there is still a long way to go for the captain. In order to remain the player taking set pieces, he’ll have to start showing substantial improvement in the same. Though he is the only player in midfield putting any actual effort (Leon Goretzka has been terrible), it is sometimes frustrating to watch him handle situations. Unlike Laimer, he does not have a defined role at midfield and that boggles me. What is truly the requirement of the hour is for Kimmich to adopt to a specific role, and be complemented with a co-midfielder who is actually to the Bayern level.

Der Bomber: <s>Robbery </s>Serge Gnabry

You know it remains a sorry state of affairs when your retired attackers in the visitor’s box have more attacking output than the players on pitch do.

While Serge Gnabry has emerged a source of goals and has a decently reliable finishing skillset, he is simply not enough. His attacking efforts in the first half were barely enough. The worst part remains that he is the only player with a finishing skill-set. With all that said, however. the goal was a memorable and good one.

Meister of the Match: —

Not a single player was good enough to deserve the MoTM. Substantial and highly necessary improvements better be on the way because the team is in a horrible decline.

Bayern Munich might have coughed up the Bundesliga title vs. RB Leipzig.

Bayern Munich center-back Matthijs de Ligt had to look around and wonder what was happening against RB Leipzig.

The Bavarians were comfortably ahead and leading 1-0 until the 65th minute when all hell broke loose. By the 86th minute, Bayern Munich was down 3-1, courtesy of two penalty conversions by Die Roten Bullen and De Ligt was left stunned.

“The atmosphere (in the dressing room) is dead. Dortmund? We have to look at ourselves. We didn’t play a good game. Hopefully Dortmund won’t win tomorrow, but we have to look at ourselves and win our game next week,” De Ligt told Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).

One penalty came because of a sloppy play from De Ligt’s center-back partner, Benjamin Pavard, while other was the result of a handball call on Noussair Mazraoui. When adding in the second disappearing act by Joao Cancelo, this was one of the worst performance by a Bayern Munich backline in quite some time.

Now, the season is in the hands of Borussia Dortmund, something that no one on the Bayern Munich roster likely feels comfortable with.
