There is a doctor in the house—er—plane

Doctors are some of the most important individuals in our society. They work tirelessly to make sure we are in tip-top shape or cure us of any illness. Case in point, here’s an incident involving one of Bayern Munich’s doctors, and he may have unexpectedly saved a person’s life.

According to German news outlet BILD (as captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMia), there was a medical emergency as a passenger collapsed in the plane that was carrying Bayern Munich’s contingent back home from Manchester following their Champions League game with Manchester City.

Prof. Dr. Roland Schmidt, the club’s cardiologist, sprang into action and wasted no time in treating the unfortunate passenger until an ambulance came along sometime later and brought the man to hospital. The ordeal delayed the flight by more than one hour.

It is truly fortunate that Schmidt was there and prevented the terrible escalation of the situation. Hopefully the person that collapsed is now doing fine and recovered fully.

Dayot Upamecano is taking a lot of heat.

Former Liverpool FC player Jamie Carragher has went on to successfully make a name for himself as a pundit.

When he was not ripping out push-ups on television or dishing out hot takes on the tube on Tuesday, he was blasting Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano on Twitter.

Upamecano has an absolutely miserable match during Bayern Munich’s 3-0 destruction at the hands of Manchester City and Carragher was there to thumb out his disbelief that Upamecano is a starter for the French national team ahead of Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate:

We finally know the extent of the punishment Mane will face.

According to reports in the German media, Bayern Munich have settled the issue between Leroy Sane and Sadio Mane stemming from their altercation after Tuesday’s loss to Manchester City. Per Bild, a meeting took place between the club bosses and the players involved, as well as Mane’s management, and the Senegalese winger allegedly admitted his fault.

Sadio Mane will remain a Bayern Munich player, for now (via Kerry Hau). Whether that changes in the summer remains to be seen. A sanction for the player — at least a major fine — is still pending. Per Sky, both players apologized to the squad for their actions and have now rejoined full team training. Coach Thomas Tuchel should have both players available for the upcoming games.

Not a climactic resolution, but it’ll have to do. After yesterday’s furor over the incident coming to light, Bayern handled it in a quiet and dignified manner. Now the focus will shift to the game against Hoffenheim on Saturday, where all three points are needed. Given that Manchester City have virtually ended all hopes of progression in the Champions League, Bayern need three points to at least win one trophy this season.

Manchester City took a commanding lead over Bayern Munich in the UCL.

Manchester City star John Stones said that the team’s midfield and defense did not do anything special to thwart Bayern Munich’s attack; they simply just got in the way.

In particular, Stones said that Manchester City’s ability to block shots played a massive role in the match.

“Huge things like that (blocks) are always satisfying to watch, they don’t happen too often. We thrive off things like blocks. Ruben’s today, Nathan Ake’s, (Ederson)’s few saves when Leroy (Sané)’s hitting the ball we know what he’s like when he gets into those positions,” Stones told the Manchester Evening News. “They’re huge moments in games and especially in fine margins in big games like this, those are the key moments for me that matter and I think we should celebrate those. You can probably see from the stands that we do and it gives everyone such a big lift.”

Stones also said there were not many moments where his side did not feel in control of the match.

“Being together, I didn’t know about the possession stats but we always felt comfortable and even when they were 70 minutes into the game and we were kind of backed up onto our 18-yard box it’s about being calm in those situations, knowing that everyone’s in their positions and trusting in the process that everyone’s going to do their job and put their heart on the line sometimes,” said Stones.

Not everyone is thrilled with Yann Sommer.

Of all the things that went wrong during Bayern Munich’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City in the Champions League, Yann Sommer’s performance was among the few that did not warrant a full-on blasting from the media.

Or so we thought.

Former Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller, former Bayern Munich midfielder Didi Hamann, and ex-VfL Bochum manager Peter Neururer are doing some punditry and lambasted Sommer’s positioning (as captured by The Daily Mail):

“These are the centimeters that he is missing,’ Weidenfeller said of Sommer’s attempt to keep out Rodri’s curling shot.

Former Bundesliga coach Peter Neururer agreed, saying on Sport 1 that: ‘A goalkeeper with the range and anticipation of Manuel Neuer would probably have kept the ball.’

Former Germany international Didi Hamann laid the blame for both the conceded goals and a poor defensive performance on the 34-year-old.

“What happened to Upamecano, that has a lot to do with the goalkeeper. If you’re a bit unsure as a central defender, then you need a goalkeeper who gives you security. For me, the goalkeeper was hopelessly overwhelmed today. You don’t have to show me (the shots he saved), I don’t give a damn! That’s what he’s in goal for, that’s what he’s paid to stop the ball! The goalkeeper has not only unsettled the team today, but also in recent weeks.

“You’re going to Manchester. You know a lot has to go right for us to get a result. And then you have a goalkeeper in there who almost shoots the ball in himself after 20 minutes. That’s when you start shaking. I thought when he came, he can do it. I have to reconsider today. I don’t think he’s an option to be a goalkeeper for Bayern next year because he’s played too often in the big games in recent weeks (and) was overwhelmed.”

It did not end there, however. The German national team staff also chimed in, but had far less critical commentary of Sommer:

On Amazon Prime’s coverage of the match, the pundits were a little more circumspect, with Germany head coach Hansi Flick and his assistant Benedikt Howedes refusing to spend too long considering what might have been.

Howedes said: ‘Maybe Sommer is missing two or three centimeters at the end of the day. But it’s pointless now to argue about whether Manu (Neuer) would have kept it now.’

Flick agreed that it was “not something you can change.”

Sommer’s positioning might have been questionable at times, but there were bigger issues on the table for for Bayern Munich. Hopefully all of them can be addressed and fixed prior to the weekend.

Bayern Munich is in a bad spot.

Die Folgen: Bayern’s devastating 3-0 loss to City (Bavarian Football Works)

What a mess...

A disjointed Bayern Munich squad never looked comfortable and was shellacked 3-0 by a better Manchester City side.

In the end, Pep Guardiola’s team had its way against Thomas Tuchel’s boys in a match that will be much-debated in the days, weeks, and months ahead. In an effort to “save” the season, the Bayern Munich board might have driven the final nail into the coffin for the campaign.

The only question is whether this nightmare will have carryover effects on the rest of the season — or if Bayern Munich can leave all of the bad juju on the pitch at Etihad Stadium. Here are some quick hitters on the match:

As always, let’s start with the lineup:

TODAY'S STARTING XI #MCIFCB pic.twitter.com/AgEbOf7r4L
— FC Bayern US (@FCBayernUS) April 11, 2023

Tuchel went outside the box with his 4-2-3-1 as he placed the struggling Serge Gnabry at the top of the formation as the striker with Jamal Musiala (who entered the match in a funk) behind him and Leroy Sané and Kingsley Coman as the wingers. Of course, that means that Sadio Mané and Thomas Müller were both relegated to the bench.

In an expected move, Benjamin Pavard started at right-back over defensively-deficient Joao Cancelo.

It was not the starting XI that I would have used, but Tuchel surely had his reasons. Entering the match, you could argue that Coman was the only player among that front four that was playing at — or near — the top of his game entering the match. It was a calculated risk for Tuchel. It failed.

While I have not been overly impressed with Mané, I did expect him to get the nod given his Champions League experience.

Erling Haaland almost pressured Yann Sommer into an incredible howler in the 14th minute.

Minutes later Haaland fired a shot right at Sommer that he should have buried. Two bullets dodged early on.

Rodri, however, would not miss with a left-footed curler that Sommer had no chance on. Joshua Kimmich could have done a lot better in closing in Rodri...but he didn’t.

Bayern Munich’s starting attacking group, just didn’t look overly threatening. Gnabry was completely invisible. Musiala was not really much better. The youngster is scuffling.

While Musiala’s future is as an attacking midfielder, he’s having difficulty navigating the terrain (and big bodies) in the area. I still think he’s a magnificent wing. It might not be a bad idea to give him some run on the outside to see if it can help get him going.

I didn’t understand Tuchel’s thinking in starting Gnabry. He has not been great of late and was thoroughly ineffective as a striker. I’d put the focus on Tuchel for that decision, though. Mane would have probably been the better call for a stop-gap No. 9.

Matthijs de Ligt going down in the 42nd minute was a scary sight for Bayern Munich. He re-entered the match after rolling his ankle, but it didn’t look good initially.

Ederson made a terrific save on Sane in the 48th minute, which then set off a crazy chain reaction of mistakes at the other end of the pitch when Dayot Upamecano and Benjamin Pavard both hemmed in Sommer with terrible decisions.

Alphonso Davies was not great either, honestly. Pavard was okay at times with some quality tackles, but made too many mistakes. Davies simply didn’t play well.

Sané had a terrific shot in the 54th minute, but Ederson was, again, up to the task. Seconds later, De Ligt smashed a header that probably would have scored if not for Nathan Aké (who really just happened to be in the right place at the right time).

Sommer was a real bright spot on the day. He was under duress a lot and handled it with aplomb.

Mané came on for Musiala in the 69th minute in attempt to spark the squad.

Upamecano’s horrific day continued in the 70th minute with a terrible turnover that led directly to a goal by Bernardo Silva. Upamecano gave the ball directly away to Haaland, who sent over a cross to Silva, who buried the header.

From there, City went into shark mode and smelled the blood in the water. They were all over Bayern Munich. Haaland added a third goal, which effectively sealed the tie. Pavard and Davies did terribly in defending the initial corner in and Upamecano appeared to lose Haaland on his back shoulder.

What a nightmare sequence for Upamecano and the defense as a whole. It got worse in the 86th minute when he made another brutal decision, which led to a corner for City.

What a disastrous decision to remove Julian Nagelsmann when they did. The board made an awful decision. Maybe Bayern Munich loses with Nagelsmann at the helm, but he sure as hell would not have picked that starting XI (and probably not that formation either).

Overall, we knew this would be difficult. Tuchel came in as manager at a terrible time and he’s still experimenting to see what works — only during the Champions League. That’s not exactly a great time to be feeling out what positions are good for what players. It is hard to say whether it was because of who started or who didn’t start. Again, the board put Tuchel and the team in this spot for some reason and now are reaping what they have sowed. Reading into Bayern Munich’s performances has been extremely difficult of late, but one thing is certain: This was disappointing (even though it was sort of expected).

Just another ordinary day at Bayern Munich.

We keep saying it like it’s a cliché, but there truly is never a dull moment if you’re a Bayern Munich fan. According to a breaking news report by Bild, Leroy Sane and Sadio Mane had a physical altercation after full time during the Manchester City game last night which left marks on Sane’s face. The duo had to be separated by teammates.

Per the report, Mane and Sane had an argument on the pitch last night, which continued after the final whistle. Mane apparently took issue with the way Sane spoke to him on the pitch, then suddenly attacked the younger man and left a mark on his lip (per eyewitness accounts).

The trigger for the argument was apparently in the 83rd minute, where Mane apparently ran into space for a through ball rather than coming short to receive the ball. This led to a heated exchange between the two players on the pitch, which was captured by photographers at the stadium.

According to Bild, the fight only died down after the two players were separated by their teammates. Sane had to be sent out of the dressing room in order to calm down. Bayern Munich did not want to comment on the incident and possible consequences for the parties involved.

If this is true, then this is a very bad look for Sadio Mane, who is the club’s new signing and a senior player in the dressing room. This also echoes a reported incident between him and Julian Nagelsmann earlier in the season, where Mane allegedly confronted the former Bayern coach angrily in the dressing room after being left out of the starting lineup versus PSG. The Bayern bosses will need to deal with this swiftly, as a pattern of behavior like this cannot be tolerated.

As for dressing room harmony, well ... we can safely say that it’s been shattered.

Update: Confirmation

If you thought this was just a random story spun by Bild, the rest of the German media is picking it up now. Sky Sports confirm that Leroy Sane suffered bleeding from the lip after being punched by Sadio Mane.

A 3-0 for Manchester City over Bayern Munich might be too big of a comeback to make for the Bavarians.

In some circles, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has developed a little bit of a reputation for overthinking his lineups and strategies ahead of big games.

Against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, however, Guardiola was completely on-point. Everything he did...worked en route to a 3-0 victory for City.

“I know that this Bayern team is special. We got a good result, but we need two strong games. Anything can happen at Allianz Arena. I know that because I was at Bayern for three years,” told Abendzeitung’s Patrick Strasser (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).

One other thing that Guardiola has become known for is being smart with not putting out bulletin board material. Guardiola does not want to give the Bayern Munich players any extra reason to dig down deep aside of the pride that is inevitably going to be burning inside of them when they hit the pitch at the Allianz Arena.

“It was not comfortable. Emotionally I’m destroyed. I have 10 more years today. It was such a demanding game,” Guardiola told Goal. “Now I have to relax, a day off for the guys, and prepare for Leicester. I know exactly what you have to do there [in the second leg against Bayern]. If you don’t perform really well they are able to score one, two, three. I know that. The players know that. It’s an incredible result, but we have to play our game with a huge, huge personality.

“We don’t need to tell them [his players] the warnings. Three years there and I know in Europe this team especially, you have to have a really good performance. To knock out these teams you have to have two good games, not just one.”

Manchester City’s upcoming jaunt to Germany will be a business trip for the Citizens and their boss will be sure to let them know the importance of not letting the anticipation, the crowd, and Bayern Munich’s survival instinct get the better of them.
