One day close to Der Klassiker between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

Tuchel, Bayern agree timing isn’t right for Havertz deal (Sport Bild via @iMiaSanMia)

Bayern Munich has been linked to Kai Havertz many times over the years and now that one of his former coaches is the manager in Bavaria, it seemed logical that there could be a partnership in the works that would bring the attacker home to Germany.

Not so fast.

According to a report from Sport Bild journalists Tobi Altschäffl and Christian Falk, both Bayern Munich club executive and Tuchel agree that there is no need to pursue Havertz at this point:

As of now, Thomas Tuchel has not told the club about his transfer wishes. The name of Kai Havertz was mentioned during the talks, but in the end the bosses and the coach agreed that Havertz’s position is already well covered in the team.

Havertz has been a player who has played mostly everywhere but his primary position (attacking midfield). At Bayern Munich, there are a plethora of options for that position as of now, so it would make sense that the club passes on bringing in Havertz.

Germany manager knew he needed to make some changes as his team scuffled in the first half against Belgium. One of the players who left the game early was Bayer Leverkusen ace Florian Wirtz, who had a lot of trouble making an impact on the game. Flick admitted as much afterward — as we covered here.

This was a learning moment for Wirtz, who did not seem overly comfortable in either game for Germany. Whether it was being out of sorts because of the formation or not being acclimated to his teammates, Wirtz often look tentative and unsure of himself. Worst of all, he was invisible for the majority of both games.

In the Euro 2024 competition, Flick will need Wirtz at his best, so hopefully the youngster does learn from this experience. His role will surely only get bigger, but he will have to show much more on the big stage during the next set of international matches if he wants to sniff a chance at having an important role for Flick at the Euro 2024 competition.

Commitment, passion, and tactical adjustments after a woeful start.

Catching up on some more player reactions to Germany’s disappointing 2-3 loss to Belgium in men’s international friendly action: DW Sports collected some soundbites from Bayern Munich’s Serge Gnabry, West Ham United’s Thilo Kehrer, and Wolfsburg’s Felix Nmecha as they discussed the match performances and their teammates.

“Of course it’s crap when you concede two goals inside the first ten minutes,” Gnabry said bluntly to start things off. “It’s tough to get into the game after that.”

Germany did get into the game, though — Nmecha crediting tactical changes for helping the Germans reclaim a measure of control. He was a part of a double substitution at just the half hour mark, coming in for Leverkusen wonderkid Florian Wirtz while the injured Leon Goretzka was replaced by Borussia Dortmund’s Emre Can.

“Emre is a player whose attributes set him apart,” Kehrer enthused. “His tackling, his presence. Of course, it’s something we needed as a team.”

It hasn’t been a great run for Germany lately, but the players are hopeful for continued fan support to buttress a turnaround. “Commitment and passion” — two key attributes Gnabry cited as necessary to build a buzz around the national team again.

The Leverkusen rising star endured a tough half hour of action against the Red Devils.

One of Germany’s brightest young stars, Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz, endured some growing pains on the international stage with a first half hooking by coach Hansi Flick.

Wirtz started in a role somewhere between an attacking midfielder and an inverted winger, depending on how you’d interpret Hansi Flick’s starting lineup, but rarely got on the ball. He finished with fifteen touches, five possessions lost, and no duels won (via Sofascore). The few times he did look dangerous, he wasn’t able to find a teammate with his delivery who was in position to score — though this may not be his fault alone.

Regardless, Germany looked more composed and more in control after the early change, which saw Borussia Dortmund’s Emre Can replace Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka (ankle) as well. Wirtz made way for Wolfsburg midfielder Felix Nmecha. But Wirtz’s substitution was entirely a coach’s decision.

“That’s how it is,” Flick said afterwards (via @iMiaSanMia). “It’s just that he didn’t have his best day. He has to go through that too. I think that will motivate him even more.”

At nineteen, Wirtz is one of the youngest players in the national team setup and just coming off an ACL tear recovery, too. His star is still bright — and if his future takes him out of Leverkusen soon, expect Germany’s biggest club, Bayern Munich, to be among the suitors.

For now, though? A slice of humble pie for the Leverkusen prodigy, and a lot of time to think over how to avoid this outcome in his next international start.

The second half intensity saved Germany from having a totally poor showing.

Die Folgen: Germany’s 3-2 loss to Belgium (Bavarian Football Works)

Former Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick was determined to learned more about his player pool and what kind of formation he could run during this international break.

Let’s hope he achieved both goals as the team scuffled through both of its games. The 3-2 loss to Belgium wasn’t horrible...it just wasn’t good either. A very spirited second half effort made the performance palatable for many fans, but there was no real satisfaction for anyone from this set of matches.

Here are some quick hitters on the match:

Let’s take a look at the lineup:

This was pretty much what everyone expected, but man, it was functioning poorly early on.

The German defense was a complete mess. Yannick Carrasco and Romelu Lukaku scored goals in the first nine minutes and the Germans were already shellshocked.

It easily could have been 3-0, but Dodi Lukebakio blew a breakaway in an awful way.

Was Florian Wirtz even on the field? He got a quick hook that probably had more to do with keeping him fresh than his performance.

Leon Goretzka also left the match early after picking up a knock, but it was nothing serious.

I thought David Raum was pretty bad...and let’s not even discuss the center-back tandem of Matthias Ginter and ThiLOL Kehrer.

Thankfully, a Niclas Füllkrug header off of a corner resulted in a handball by Lukaku gave the Werder Bremen man a penalty. Füllkrug converted the opportunity to cut Germany’s deficit to 2-1 in the first half.

Germany did look better, more energetic, and more focused in the second half, which was promising.

Timo Werner went offside in the 59th minute on what would have been a major goal for the Germans.

Kevin De Bruyne’s 78th minute effort iced the game for Belgium and his finish was on-point. After some consistent pressure and renewed fervor, Germany’s backline let it down once again.

Serge Gnabry had a very ineffective first half, but had some dazzling moments at the end of the match. His tremendous dribbling in the 85th minute led to a chance for Germany, before he converted a pass from Kevin Schade just minutes later to make a it a 3-2 game. That was nice progress for the embattled Bayern Munich attacker.

Overall, it was...not great. At a minimum, Flick learned something about his players and his new formation. Where it all goes from here, though, is anyone’s guess.

(Goal)

Maybe not necessarily the Philadelphia Union (though the thought of me bumping into the Argentina legend at Wawa is nothing short of scintillating), but Paris Saint-Germain star Lionel Messi is reportedly considering a move to MLS:

Lionel Messi will reportedly get to pick which MLS club he wants to play for if heading to America, with all 29 teams set to fund a stunning transfer.

Various landing spots have been mooted for the all-time great – from Barcelona to the Middle East – but interest from the United States remains. David Beckham co-owned Inter Miami have made no secret of the fact that they would like to welcome Messi to Florida, with coach Phil Neville saying: “I’m not going to deny [it and say] there isn’t truth in the speculation that we’re interested in Lionel Messi. We want to bring the best players in the world to this football club. Messi and [Sergio] Busquets are the two that stand out more in recent years. They’re great players who would still be a massive benefit to this organization. For MLS, it would be a game-changer.”

However, the kicker to this story is that MLS might be workshopping a deal that would have every franchise pay for Messi in what would be an unprecedented move:

Sport is now reporting that MLS teams could work together to bankroll a sensational deal that would see Messi earn over $1 million a week. As his presence in America would stand to benefit everyone, with commercial and TV revenue taken into account, it is suggested that all teams could contribute to his wages and he would be free to choose whether he turns out in Miami, New York, Los Angeles or Atlanta.

There is no doubt that Messi moving to MLS could create a frenzy, though it might be a mountain of a financial mess to sort through for everyone involved.

Did Germany make any progress during this break?

What a mess.

Germany gave up two goals in the first nine minutes to Belgium and looked absolutely terrible for the majority of the first half before desperation kicked in. If you heard it was bad and didn’t see it, we can assure you it was worse than you can imagine.

It did eventually get a little better, but not good enough to prevent the Belgians from marching out of Germany with a victory. Here are some observations on the friendly:

Raum is one of the most positionally unaware defenders in Germany

For all of his offensive talent, David Raum played Romelu Lukaku onside for Belgium’s second goal. It was already obvious that the German defense was a mess, but Raum’s sloppiness was an absolute killer. It is hard enough when the backline really could not stop anyone, but to be that unaware — at that juncture — was terrible.

Raum was not the not the only weak link on the backline, however. They were all bad and the midfield offered zero stability. It was a horrible effort to say the least. I will say, I didn’t hate what I saw from Marius Wolf in the two games, though. There might be something there to build on.

Germany’s attack took a while to get going

If you are a fan of errant passes, rushed decisions, and overall sloppy attacking play, boy, do we have a team for you!

Hansi Flick’s attack really offered no help to the porous defense. There was no sustained possession, no dynamic movement, and no urgency early in the match. It was a very Joachim Löw circa 2019-2020 look and feel.

Hint: That’s not a compliment.

Again, it did get better. There was more focus and a drive to score in the second half. With some luck (and some better play), Germany could have walked out the victors.

Füllkrug continues to impress

Niclas Füllkrug is really the one player who seems to be taking advantage of every situation. You can say what you want about Füllkrug, but he has been Germany’s best player since the World Cup.

It is the weirdest situation because Füllkrug was essentially an afterthought at this time last year, but now I would have trouble finding a way to keep out of the starting XI. I’d say that until Germany finds someone that beats him out, you have to pencil him into the starting XI.

More energy and focus in the second half

Germany was better in the second half...like much better. I’m not saying it was great by any means, but it was good enough to provide a little hope. If only the Germans would have started the match with the same kind of intensity and focus.

It ultimately led to Serge Gnabry scoring a goal in the 87th minute, but in the end it was not enough.

This was...disappointing

After a lackluster victory over Peru, Germany laid a major egg in the first half against Belgium. The rampant sloppiness and lack of attention to detail is not something that German teams would normally be associated with, but here we are.

As much as Flick was dynamite with Bayern Munich (and also when he initially took over Germany), his development of this Germany group is lacking. However, these are all players for major clubs who are underperforming, too. They also have to be accountable for playing poorly.

Whatever Flick’s goal was for these two games with the scaled back (in terms of established talent) players, I hope he achieved it. I hope that he got the info he needed on the young players and that his experimentation with the 4-2-2-2 gave him what he was looking for. At a minimum, the data gathered and the film analysis should help the coaching staff decide how to best move forward with the roster and tactics.

Germany’s attack came to life in the dying minutes of the game, but it wasn’t enough for Serge Gnabry and co. to seal a comeback.

Following a comfortable win over Peru, Germany suffered a 2-3 defeat on home soil against Belgium. Hansi Flick’s men grew into the game after a shaky start, but were ultimately left undone by the Red Devil’s prowess on counter-attacks. Here are the match awards from tonight’s friendly:

Jersey Swap: Kevin De Bruyne

Manchester City’s De Bruyne was involved in all three of Belgium’s goals and deservedly walks out as tonight’s best player on the pitch. The attacking midfielder often succeeded in exploiting gaps in and around the hosts’ defense, while he was also instrumental in unsettling Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich and helping the Belgians disrupt Germany’s build-up play. As the creative force for Domenico Tedesco’s team, De Bruyne showed what Die Nationalmannschaft were missing in their attack.

Der Kaiser: No one

There were no standout performers from Germany’s defense tonight. Center-backs Thilo Kehrer and Matthias Ginter failed to keep up with Romelu Lukaku’s darting movements, while the Belgians also targeted the space vacated by Marius Wolf and David Raum. Both of Germany’s full-backs offered little creativity in attack and could deliver only two successful crosses from a combined ten attempts. It was a discouraging display from the German back four and Flick will certainly have to work on improving his defense’s structure and coordination.

Fußballgott: Emre Can

Although he had to replace an injured Leon Goretzka, Emre Can’s introduction provided Germany with much-needed stability and control. The Borussia Dortmund man was comfortable dictating the tempo and his presence as defensive-midfielder instantly took some pressure off of Kimmich, allowing the Deutschland captain to roam more freely upfield. Moreover, the 29-year-old put in commendable defensive work as Germany’s “last man” in the dying minutes of the match.

Der Bomber: Serge Gnabry

Photo by Joris Verwijst/BSR Agency/Getty Images

It wasn’t Gnabry’s best game but the Bayern Munich winger gets the award for best German attacker after an industrious performance. Where the likes of Timo Werner and Florian Wirtz failed to assert themselves during the game, Gnabry was the only player who was trying to make things happen in the final-third. The 27-year old was always looking to get into dangerous positions inside the penalty area and he ultimately succeeded at getting on the scoresheet in the 87th minute.

Meister of the Match: Thomas Müller

Hansi Flick can experiment with different formations and different combinations of attackers before next year’s Euros. And Germany may boast some of the brightest attacking-midfield talents in Kai Havertz, Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala. But tonight’s match should serve as another reminder that Thomas Müller’s role in the heart of Bayern Munich and Germany’s attack remains undisputed.

Although their performance improved over the course of the match, Germany’s movements in the final third were often static, with the final balls lacking precision. Despite having Werner and Felix Nmecha on the field, striker Niclas Füllkrug was often isolated and the team’s overall attacking structure was in desperate need of guidance. All of these issues can be corrected by having Müller on the pitch. For now, Flick may continue giving young players a chance to get acclimatized to the national team. However, the former Bayern coach can unlock the true potential of his side by letting Müller and Füllkrug spearhead the German attack.

The team’s poor performances are starting to become a pressing issue.

Well, that didn’t look like a Germany team entirely ready to host the 2024 EURO. Having concluded their first international period since their flameout at the FIFA 2022 Men’s World Cup, Hansi Flick’s squad looked as adrift as they’ve ever been — at least for the better part of a half.

Thankfully, Germany turned it around on Belgium in the second to pull within striking distance before ultimately sinking by a score of 2-3. Still, they made it exciting to the very end, and one wonders what might have been had they started hot.

“We were too passive in the first half hour; too respectful. We didn’t put our opponents under pressure, and Belgium just outplayed us,” Flick lamented afterward (via DFB.de). “We changed things after that, and got a bit of stability. The team played with a lot of passion. After half an hour we started doing things better and started putting pressure on the opposition. You could see that Belgium were making more mistakes then. For us it’s important that we keep working on timing when we press.”

Indeed the difference in control between the two phases of the game was extraordinary. Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku hit the post and his side could have poured it on and gone three, even four goals up in the first 45’. By the time the dust settled, it was the Germans who had poured on the attack, with sixteen shots to the Belgians’ seven.

And if timing in pressing actions was part of the issue, well, perhaps it’s understandable. Flick’s squad selection this time was more experimental, including a lot of bubble players while leaving out veteran mainstays as Bayern Munich’s Thomas Müller and Leroy Sané. Additionally, Chelsea FC’s Kai Havertz was among those who had to depart the camp after the first game against Peru due to illness.

In any event, a raucous crowd at Köln was left biting their fingernails (please don’t do that, it’s dirty!) up to the last second, when Joshua Kimmich’s back-to-back corners at the death failed to find an open header before the referee concluded proceedings.

“I’d like to praise the supporters tonight, who seemed to really feel that the team had tried to turn the result around and got behind us fantastically,” Flick concluded.
