Red? Yellow? Whatever the case, Dayot Upamecano was sent off.

At Bayern Munich, there will always be something to debate (hopefully civilly at BFW).

During Bayern Munich’s 3-2 loss at the hands of Borussia Monchengladbach, Dayot Upamecano got called for a questionable red card in the 8th minute that altered the entire trajectory of the match.

Was it soft? Yeah.

Did Alassane Pléa embellish a bit? Probably (despite his protests).

But was it a red card in the eyes of Tobias Welz? Yes, and that’s all that really matters.

(If you want my opinion, it was soft, but the play was risky — and therefore was always going to be a threat that a red card could be shown in that situation.)

The play itself was a risk.

The second Upamecano made contact from that position, he knew there would be a chance that things could go sideways. If Plea even took the slightest stumble down, there was always going to be a chance that Plea would hit the deck.

He did — and Upamecano paid for it.

Could Yann Sommer have made a different decision with his role in the play? For sure. Would he like a “do over”? You bet.

From that point, the game became all about Julian Nagelsmann and how he would adjust to being down a man. And yes, the boss made some mistakes with his moves that even he admitted.

The players, however, also did not perform at the best of their abilities, either.

Whether it was the compact schedule and heavy legs, too much rotation, or just a bad day to have a bad day, Bayern Munich never got on track (which is not shocking considering it was down a man for so long).

It was truly a “total team effort” to lose the match and the blame could be evenly distributed.

In the postgame melee, there was a ton of finger-pointing and frustration. It was directed at the referee, Nagelsmann, certain players, etc.

In the end, though, it was just one loss — a defeat that was played with Bayern Munich being down a man for almost 90 minutes of game time.

I didn’t like every decision that Nagelsmann made and I didn’t like every performance by every player. What I can say, though, is that it’s just one loss.

If the trend continues next week against Union Berlin, then we will have a post called the “BFW Vent Tent” and we can all wallow there to put the necessary figures on blast in a safe space.

Until we reach that point, though, let’s just remember this isn’t the first time Bayern Munich sputtered against Gladbach — and it won’t be the last.

Whether it was a true red card or not can be debated forever, but it went down that way in the books and with that, the Bundesliga title race just got a whole lot tighter.

It was a controversial call, but Welz is doubling down on his decision.

Dayot Upamecano’s red card in the eighth minute of Bayern Munich’s 3-2 loss at Borussia Monchengladbach was the real turning point in the match and a point of a high controversy.

He was ruled to have brought down Gladbach’s Alassane Pléa as Bayern’s last man back in retreat, but replays seemed to suggest that there was very minimal contact from Upamecano on his French compatriot. There was the slightest touch on the shoulder of Plea from Upamecano, but it looked like the former took a bit of a dive to sell the decision to the referee, and from then on, everything tilted in Gladbach’s favor, despite Bayern managing to score twice with only ten men.

Julian Nagelsmann vociferously vented his frustration at the decision after the final whistle, having a right go at the officiating staff. However, he was very prompt to apologize for his outburst with a public apology via his social media accounts. He did receive a yellow card during the match, but it remains to be seen whether or not the DFL or DFB will decide to punish him any further for his comments made towards the officials.

Later on in the weekend, the match referee Tobias Welz went on Sport1’s Dopplepass to explain his rationale for making the decision. “Of course it was a close decision,” he said, adding that “[Pléa] tried to keep running, but there was contact on the shoulder from [Upamecano], which made him lose his balance. Upamecano was the last man and therefore shown a red card.”

Welz could’ve made the decision to have a closer look at the incident himself via the video assist monitor on the side of the pitch at Borussia Park, but he was confident enough in the verbal communications coming from the replay center in Cologne. “I discussed it with the video assistant, of course. He also checked it for a long time, but he was not able to give me any other pictures than the ones I saw live on the pitch. That’s why we agreed there was no need to review it,” he explained.

Welz also provided some reassurance that there are no heart feelings between himself and the Bayern manager, especially considering what Nagelsmann had said about the officials after full time to the press. “We had a face-to-face conversation in the dressing room. There were no insults. For me, everything is okay. We’ll shake hands normally next time we see each other,” he assured.

Dayot Upamecano wasn’t the only one seeing red for Bayern Munich.

Die Folgen: Bayern’s 3-2 loss to Gladbach (Bavarian Football Works)

Bayern Munich dropped a 3-2 decision to Borussia Mönchengladbach in a match that was a mess from the get-go. Dayot Upamecano’s 8th minute red card put the Bavarians in an early hole that they would never be able to dig themselves out of. Here are some quick hitters on the match:

Does Julian Nagelsmann read BFW and/or listen to our podcast? People are asking (maybe not, but let’s dig into the lineup anyway):

I was ecstatic to see Jamal Musiala get some rest. The kid is worn down and needed to break. Little did I know, however, that Musiala would be called into action after halftime and not really get the rest he desperately needs.

I did not anticipate Matthijs de Ligt getting a rest, but he likely needed some downtime as well. It does not hurt to get Daley Blind some run, either.

Leroy Sané has not look like himself lately, so a rest for him was beneficial was well. Like Musiala, though, he also got called into action.

Entering the match, I was curious to see how Serge Gnabry embraced a wing-back role as he was not thrilled to play that spot last season. It did not appear, however, that Gnabry really liked playing the position much at all this season either as he was a bit of a non-factor.

All that said, the early red card to Dayot Upamecano ensured at least one Bayern Munich player was going to get an extended break.

The pressure of being down one man was felt almost immediately. Lars Stindl perfectly placed a one-time shot off of a set piece to put the Bavarians in a hole very early on.

You could make an argument one way or the other for Upamecano’s red card. It was a little soft, but the slight contact and body positioning absolutely played a role in how it was called. It was one of those that you would want called for your team if you were attacking, but not against you if you are defending. I might have had less of a problem with it than some others.

Yann Sommer might have been able to help Upamecano avoid having to make that move as well. Communication between the goalkeeper and the backline will get better, but it is not totally where it needs to be right now.

I will say, I thoroughly disagreed with taking Thomas Müller off instead of Ryan Gravenberch after the red card. I feel like this is the exact situation where Gravenberch’s griping affected a coaching decision. In a match where you probably needed some veteran guile to find a way to draw even, it did not make much sense to me to take away a player who is likely most experienced at being in a 10-man situation. It was, indeed, a crappy decision.

That could not have really sat well with Müller, either.

Gladbach’s social media team had a hell of a day:

Stindl should have made 2-0 in the 24th minute but his shot went wide. Stindl is one of those guys, who has pieced together a really nice career, while probably being a little underrated.

Alphonso Davies did well to find Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting on Bayern Munich’s first goal. Davies seems to be snapping out of the funk that he was in, which is a great thing if you are the Bavarians.

Leroy Sané came in for Gnabry at halftime and was decent. Musiala came in for Gravenberch at the same time and was okay. It was not ideal to have to play either one of them for an extended period, but Nagelsmann probably felt like he had no other recourse.

Jonas Hofmann, however, gave Gladbach the lead just 10 minutes after the second half whistle blew and Die Fohlen would never look back. Hofmann finished with a goal and two assists and was by far the most impactful person on the pitch <s>(aside of the referee)</s>.

I kid about the referee, but I understand why some people were so bent out of shape about it.

Marcus Thuram’s 84th minute tally effectively ended the match, but Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel did add a goal in extra time to cut the deficit. For Tel, it was surely a good moment. For the team, however, this was surely a frustrating day.

Overall, the red card made it near impossible to best a very motivated Gladbach side. Bayern Munich did fight, but it is fair to question Nagelsmann’s management of the game. Some days, the coach can push all of the right buttons...and others, not so much. To be extremely clear, I’m not blaming Nagelsmann for the loss — but like more than a few Bayern Munich players did on the pitch, the coach also made some mistakes. When you combine some poor play and iffy decision-making on the pitch and on the touchline, it typically does lead to an “L” like we saw on Saturday. It’s just one game, but Bayern Munich needs to put this one behind it quickly and get focuses on the stiff challenges that are right around the corner.

I generally don’t care what an athlete does after a match, but this Neymar-McDonald’s-Poker Night story is cracking me up:

Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar Jr. has been in controversy over these last few days. After the capital club’s 1-0 first-leg loss to Bayern Munich on Tuesday at the Parc des Princes, it hasn’t been a good few days for the squad.

Nonetheless, the 31-year-old used his time off to have a poker and fast food night, which didn’t sit well with the French media. Additionally, others speculated if Neymar’s acts were a shot at Mbappe due to his post-game remarks of needing to sleep and prepare well for the second leg.

However, Karim Bennani defended the Brazilian’s actions and didn’t believe that the veteran having a night out was a direct shot at what Mbappe stated.

“I don’t think it’s related to what Mbappé said, and if so, Mbappé is not the president of Neymar at PSG,” Bennani said on “L’Équipe de Greg” (h/t Canal Supporters). “He feels like doing whatever he wants on a day off. Let him go do what he wants. We are not going to be there to check Neymar’s plate. […] Neymar’s problem is that he is not good at the moment. If Neymar qualifies PSG against Bayern Munich, no one will tell us about this trip to a fast food restaurant. He does not play big on Sunday against Lille. I want to say that we don’t care about the match against Lille, honestly. All the fans are only focused on March 8 and that match against Bayern. The justice of the peace, for Neymar and all other players, will be March 8.”

Thomas Müller had no interest in becoming a distraction for Bayern Munich.

Say what you want about Bayern Munich star Thomas Müller, but the man can read a room.

After being prematurely yanked out of his team’s 3-2 loss to Borussia Mönchengladbach because of an early — and controversial — red card to teammate Dayot Upamecano, the veteran saw his playing time consist of just 16 minutes. In a match that probably needed his guile and experience, Müller was mired on the bench.

Joao Cancelo stepped in for Müller and turned in another ho-hum performance after a blistering start with the club.

While Müller was surely disappointed at his brief showing, Müller was not about to get drawn into starting any kind of controversy and nipped that sentiment in the bud with an Instagram post detailing as much:

What Müller recognizes with this post is just how quickly a season can go off-the-rails. If the 33-year-old decided to hit social media or go to the press to vent his frustrations right now, it would do nothing, but damage the team’s immediate goals. For all intents and purposes, Müller might not like his role or how he was handled, but he won’t become a distraction.

This isn’t a good look

Yesterday, Bayern Munich lost once more to Borussia Mönchengladbach, this time on the wrong side of a 3-2 scoreline. Not a single person affiliated with Bayern was happy with the match, especially with the officiating of Tobias Welz. A rather soft red card for Dayot Upamecano and the general officiating culminated in Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann blowing his top off in the mixed zone after the game and had a go at Welz and co when they exited the referees’ changing room. Not a wise move.

Why? According to Twitter account @iMiaSanMia, Nagelsmann is now in hot water because the incident is being investigated by the DFB. The control committee will first ask Nagelsmann to comment on the incident (the outburst), presumably to get a more detailed explanation for his behavior. After Nags responds, the committee will go over his responses and decide if further action is needed.

This isn’t the first time someone at Bayern has gotten into trouble regarding interviews. Club legend and captain Philipp Lahm was fined 50,000 euros in 2009 for an unauthorized interview; if you multiply Lahm’s fine by 40, that’s what Manuel Neuer lost (two million euros) after he lashed out at the club for sacking Toni Tapalovic just this year. FC Hollywood at its peak.

Marcus Thuram wrapped up the night for Gladbach by scoring the third and, ultimately, the winning goal. | Photo by Lars Baron/Getty Images

Gladbach did what they do but Bayern could have done far more than they did.

Bayern Munich did not have to lose today despite being down to 10-men. However, the problems that showed up against PSG cost Bayern today.

The red card was the right decision

It was a soft decision; I do not disagree there. However, if you are the last man and you foul your opponent or even touch him in the slightest, you are going to be sent off per the letter of the law. That is why Kylian Mbappe’s goal was chalked off for an offside by a hair in the build-up, when Bayern played PSG in the Champions League, by VAR — offside is offside even it is by a toe as long as you can score a goal with that body part.

Dayot Upamecano did the best he could 1-1 against Alassane Plea. I personally think Yann Sommer should have come out faster but not everybody does the sweeper keeper job as well as the legendary Manuel Neuer, not even a keeper as qualified as Yann Sommer.

Make no mistake about this — the offense is a problem that isn’t solving itself

Bayern has scored a ton of goals this season but, against PSG, time and again, the decision making was poor. When the Bundesliga came back in 2023, Bayern struggled mightily to break down teams such as RB Leipzig and Köln. The incorrect decision making in the final third continued today and even when Gladbach left holes at the back, Bayern did little to take advantage. With Joe Scally out, the team was weaker for it at the back. Ramy Bensebaini can be got at; however, the offense’s inability to make the correct decisions and just clueless nature lately means that Bayern scored two when there was room for more.

The defending wasn’t much better either

I watch Gladbach a lot. That means I watched them scratch their heads against Schalke and fail to break down a backline that has conceded 41 goals this season. I also watched them get absolutely torn apart by Hertha Berlin last week. I am willing to bet 10-man Bayern can defend better than 11-man Schalke, even when they have to deal with Marcus Thuram and/or Alassane Plea. I will leave it there. All of this brings me back to the next point.

Julian Nagelsmann’s substitutions may have handed this game to Gladbach

Yes, I know, I will not hear the end of this from the man who mastered a one-goal win over the most toothless PSG side I have seen in a long time. But let’s take a look at them one by one:

Joao Cancelo for Thomas Müller: There was no need for a substitution that early. Nagelsmann could have waited a few minutes to see how things would have played out. Adding a defender whose main quality lies in attacking was not needed here. I saw Matthijs de Ligt warming up; I thought he would come on for Daley Blind as we know Blind might be a liability due to his speed. Also, there was the option of having Joshua Kimmich drop into the back-line and play Müller as an eight with Goretzka as a six. This was the biggest headscratcher for me.

Jamal Musiala for Ryan Gravenberch: You need a goal but you’re also down a man. I would wait to make this change especially because this change was made in tandem with another attacking change in Leroy Sané for Serge Gnabry, which was the right call.

Mathys Tel for Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting & Matthijs de Ligt for Leon Goretzka: I think the Tel call was good but the Goretzka call wasn’t. Again, Blind might have been the right call there.

Overall — the difference De Ligt made with his on-point tackles was visible once he came on. The struggles of the offense was visible throughout the match, a struggle which an on-form Müller would have taken advantage of had he been allowed to stay on the pitch. Nagelsmann could have very easily opted to play this game on the counter attack. Gladbach was there for the taking.

Choupo-Moting continues to earn his contract

If Bayern had gotten away with a point in this one, they’d have Choupo to thank. His tirelessness, work ethic, nose for goal and goal-saving interruptions might have singlehandedly handed Bayern a point. I would like to add word on Mathys Tel too; Tel’s desire and talents means he might just make the grade at Bayern and blossom into a future star.

Yet another disasterclass against Gladbach. | Photo by Lars Baron/Getty Images

What a disasterclass.

Bayern Munich facing Gladbach has, for years, been among the best fixtures in the Bundesliga. A derby of its own kind, these two teams have always been at loggerheads. Past meetings with Gladbach had one huge factor causing worry — the presence of Yann Sommer between the posts. With Sommer on the Bavarians’ side, there was nothing more to worry about... right?

No.

It was yet another disaster against die Fohlen for the Rekordmeister. Despite being in a precarious situation with table second Union Berlin only a point away from snatching the first spot, the Bavarians underperformed and losing Dayot Upamecano eight minutes into the game certainly did not help. Gladbach looked simply brilliant, relentlessly pressing and seamlessly working like a unit.

A disappointing loss indeed, but here are the match awards.

Jersey Swap: Jonas Hoffman

Let’s be honest — the entire Gladbach team was brilliant. Lars Stindl and Alassane Plea were brilliant but Hoffman was simply on another level. Two assists and a goal to his name, Hoffman had everything going right — the right passes, beautiful touches, and the sheer work he put in with every duel.

There was not a single player on the Gladbach side who wasn’t putting in effort — they truly gave Bayern a run for their money.

Der Kaiser: Alphonso Davies

Alphonso Davies was the bright spot in Bayern. He was simply our best player on the pitch, creating fantastic chances and subsequently making two assists. When the rest of the team looked hapless and defense in particular, a nightmare, it was Davies that pulled things together and made Bayern look more potent. In all fairness, the Canadian was let down by the rest of the team and deserves better. Davies has always enjoyed being far up the pitch and he continues to prove his talent with every performance.

Der Fußballgott: Leon Goretzka

There was nothing too spectacular from the midfield today. Goretzka put in a decent performance, making good passes but not offering his usual attack output. An unwarranted yellow card aside, there was not too much to talk about Goretzka’s time on the pitch but the fact that he was still significantly more impactful than the others.

On that note, however, a question we must address is if given a better chance at playing, Ryan Gravenberch could end up more impactful than Goretzka.

Der Bomber: Mathys Tel

Mathys Tel is a very special player at Bayern, given the talent he has and the hopes Bayern fans have on him. His substitution was made in a desperation for goals, and the youngster delivered. A fantastic last-minute goal, though insufficient to win the game, certainly made the loss sting a lot lesser. In his half hour on the pitch, Tel managed to keep the ball away from the opposition, and provide quality in attack.

All in all, he is the striker Bayern need and has done more than enough to prove himself to be worthy of a starting position.

Meister of the Match: Alphonso Davies

There is no other way around it — Davies deserves the MoTM. A close enough candidate was Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting, who has been nothing short of incredible all-season for Bayern.

For once, the Sommer factor wasn’t a concern, for all the wrong reasons.

Initial reactions and observations

With this loss, Union Berlin seem poised to overtake Bayern Munich in the table this week. Makes next weekend’s clash an absolute nail-biter, the Bundesliga could be on the line.

Strange stat: Bayern Munich have not won vs Gladbach since Hansi Flick was in charge, a 6-0 win at the Allianz Arena in May 2021. They didn’t take that loss well.

Two assists for Alphonso Davies today, solid performance from him. Hopefully he can use this as a springboard to get more goal contributions in the future.

Another goal for Mathys Tel in his debut Bundesliga season. It came too late to influence the outcome, but it could help his confidence.

It’s a shame that, given Bayern lost anyway, Musiala, Sane, and Cancelo couldn’t get a game of rest. Missed opportunities everywhere.

It’s time to move from a big game to a deceptively tricky game. While Borussia Monchengladbach have a squad that costs less than Mbappe, they have a far better chance of hurting Bayern Munich than PSG did in midweek. Whatever voodoo spell they possess that lets them do that is a mystery, and it remains to be seen whether Sommer’s move to Munich has done anything to even the odds.

Julian Nagelsmann will be without Kinglsey Coman in this game, a big blow considering the Frenchman’s current form. Meanwhile Joshua Kimmich returns from his one game suspension and is likely to take the captain’s armband and dictate things from the heart of the midfield. Joining him will probably be a full complement of talented players — the likes of Jamal Musiala, Serge Gnabry, Alphonso Davies, and more. Bayern outclass Gladbach at every single position on the pitch, it’s simply time to make that difference count.
