Bayern’s number six is still a key player for the Rekordmeister.

Joshua Kimmich might be Bayern Munich’s fieriest, feistiest player. But after a defensive lapse against RB Leipzig resulted in the equalizing goal — and two dropped points that loom increasingly large for the title holders — the heat is starting to turn up just a notch on the Bavarian number six.

Club sporting director Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidžić isn’t having any of that.

“I watched every training session. He was outstanding in the training camp and has come back well,” Brazzo declared after the Leipzig game for Bild TV (via @iMiaSanMia). “Our team didn’t perform well in Leipzig, especially in the last half hour.

“Of course he (Kimmich) made a mistake before the goal, but otherwise he’s a player who is very, very important for our team. He thought a lot after the World Cup, but is now fully focused on Bayern again.”

Kimmich opened up after Germany’s disastrous exit at the 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup, saying he was afraid he’d “fall into a hole” — and wondering aloud if he were among those chiefly responsible for Germany’s lackluster tournaments, having only broken through the senior ranks in time for the nation’s proud run of semi-final appearances to morph into consecutive group stage exits.

But the mentality is strong with this one. On Tuesday, only days after the Leipzig result, Kimmich was getting after it again — leaving his heart and his soul out on the pitch, barking orders at teammates and setting standards. Yes, Bayern dropped points again. But it was the ferocious Kimmich who rescued the draw this time — with a fierce rocket of a shot in the 90th minute.

Bayern’s ambitions for the result of the season remain high, from the Bundesliga to the DFB-Pokal to the Champions League. All are still in play. If they’re to reach their goals, their integral captain will surely be a major part of the story.

Müller knows what fans felt about Sommer before we signed him.

Bayern Munich’s new signing Yann Sommer has finally played after what felt like an eternity, from the first rumor to the official announcement. The 34-year-old Swiss goalkeeper has made his debut as a Bayern player against RB Leipzig. Thomas Müller, who didn’t start the game, talks about the Rekordmeister’s newest acquisition.

Müller told Blick (via Twitter account @iMiaSanMia) that the former Gladbach man’s reception was “short and sweet” but said that the players were familiar with him due to previous meetings. “The reception was short and sweet, but he is also a well-known face in the league. We know him personally from playing against each other,” Müller said.

Every Bayern fan had it hard when Sommer becomes “Memo Ochoa at every World Cup” mode, recently setting a new Bundesliga record for most saves in a league match (19). Müller is aware of this and mentioned Bayern’s previous games with Gladbach as unpleasant. “We have often made acquaintance with him in an unpleasant way whenever he faced us.”

Sommer’s debut came against RB Leipzig and was unfortunate not to get a clean sheet in his debut as the Saxons earned themselves an equalizer and a point. Müller said that despite Leipzig not giving Sommer too much work, it was evident that he needed more time to fit in and that it’s totally fine. “He didn’t have much to do. Once or twice on the ball you could notice that it was his first game for Bayern. But that’s also legitimate, he’ll grow into it well,” the 1989-born said.

Yann Sommer’s transfer concludes a flurry of activity.

Bayern Munich’s purchase of goalkeeper Yann Sommer from Gladbach will be the last incoming player of the winter transfer window, confirms sporting director Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidžić.

“Our transfer activities are now complete,” Brazzo said (AZ Strasser, via @iMiaSanMia). The Bavarians have signed Sommer and Ajax left-back Daley Blind in the window.

Sommer’s winter arrival has caused quite the stir, and the keeper was thrown into action right away — wearing the #27 — in Friday’s 1-1 draw away at RB Leipzig. It’ll be trial by fire for the Swiss international, who will have little time to ramp up to full integration ahead of next month’s Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain.

Beyond PSG, Sommer will also have the coming years of his career to think about. At 34, he doesn’t have the luxury of writing off years should Manuel Neuer return fully healthy and quickly. But Neuer is still the captain and starting keeper — and this will be a topic for another day.

“Manuel Neuer is our captain, our number 1,” Brazzo said (via Julian Buhl). “We have a lot of respect for him. Let’s give him the time to recover from his injury. We’re happy that Yann Sommer is here. Everything else, we’ll see in the summer and manage then.”

What did you think of the first game back?

Bayern Munich’s 1-1 draw with RB Leipzig wasn’t the most thrilling of encounters. Players on both sides are either drained from the fierce run of games, including the 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup last month, or rested to the point of rusty. Either way, off-form was the theme of the day as the sides slugged out an untidy draw. Here’s how German media outlet Bild reviewed the performances:

Leipzig 1:1 Bayern | Player ratings [@BILD] pic.twitter.com/3TRHioK3XY
— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) January 20, 2023

Some notes:

Leipzig really do just reload, don’t they? A defense that in recent years lost the likes of Dayot Upamecano (FC Bayern) and Ibrahima Konaté (Liverpool FC) now has budding stars in Joško Gvardiol (about to leave, maybe to Chelsea FC or Real Madrid?) and Mohamed Simakan. How long can they keep this up?

For all of Bayern’s injuries, this was a pretty weakened Leipzig side, too. Péter Gulácsi has been injured and out of goal; David Raum and Timo Werner only came on as subs.

This was probably the worst game we’ve seen Jamal Musiala play in recent memory. He wasn’t bad — just frustrated in a disjointed attack. It’s weird to see Moose getting low ratings.

Pretty unkind to Bayern’s midfield pivot! But opinions vary on that front.

Also pretty unkind to the referee: seemed he made a lot of good calls under tough circumstances.

It’s been a while, but...are those atypically generous reviews for the Bayern fullbacks? The Davies-Gnabry pairing on the left is interesting if it continues as a trend. This particular game didn’t recommend it — but didn’t condemn it, either.

The draw did not leave anyone satisfied.

Based on the balance of the game and especially the second half, Bayern Munich might be the happier of the teams to have preserved the draw against RB Leipzig — but it’s the home side who will feel better about having nicked a point off the ten-in-a-row champions. Head coach Marco Rose and players Marcel Halstenberg and Xaver Schlager shared their post-game thoughts, as captured via FCBayern.com.

“I had the feeling there was more in it for us,” said Rose. “The first half was too untidy. Bayern kept having phases where they were able to put us under pressure. We’d win it back, but then be too slow shifting the ball forwards. The second half was very good — we were better than Bayern. We’ll take a point against such a good team.”

Added left-back Halstenberg: “We all felt there was more in it for us today. Bayern made a few mistakes, but we can be satisfied. Bayern are the stronger team, but we still had chances. We want to keep picking up the points.”

“We wanted to win,” said Schlager. “We didn’t play a good first half, and Bayern punished us. But we started to play our way in the second half and had chances. That’s why we’re not entirely satisfied with the draw. There was more to be had.”

Certainly, Leipzig showed glimpses of what they could do — carving Bayern’s defense apart at times only to come up with the poorest of end products. It’s less than you’d expect from such a talented and experienced cast of attackers, too, including the likes of Sweden’s Emil Forsberg and Spain’s Dani Olmo.

There’s a reason that Rose in particular has garnered so much praise since taking the helm in Leipzig following his poor stint at Borussia Dortmund. In his spell with Die Roten Bullen, no Bundesliga club has picked up more points in the table, Bayern included. Leipzig have 23 from ten games under Rose — and will gladly keep the six-point gap between them and the league leaders even for now, with just more than half the season to go.

If there’s to be a Bundesliga title race this year, RB Leipzig are still very much in it.

The refs got it right...probably?

When Andre Silva bundled over Bayern Munich defensive midfielder Joshua Kimmich in the box leading up to RB Leipzig’s equalizer, the immediate reaction was a cry for a foul. Bayern midfielder Leon Goretzka got into the referee’s face about it, and goalkeeper Yann Sommer raised his hand expecting the call.

After a pause and a video review, the goal was given — and Bayern players have since conceded it was the right one. Still, at first glance, one could be forgiven for thinking otherwise. Even on replay, it looks a little 50-50 (beginning at 0:12):

“I really thought it was a foul (on Kimmich),” Sommer said after the game (DAZN, via @iMiaSanMia). “At that moment, I was hoping the referee would decide for a foul.”

It was the second contentious referee decision around a goal in the game. In the first half, Leon Goretzka appeared to score the opener after a set piece, but Matthijs de Ligt was ruled to have fouled (or been offside?) in the build-up — while in the second instance, Kimmich was apparently fairly out-muscled. As Kimmich himself would admit!

All in all, it was honors even and a well-refereed match — even if tempers occasionally flared and things got chippy. Dayot Upamecano got what we’re calling an orange card in our postgame show...and the opposing coach, Marco Rose, got a yellow for his sideline protests. Jamal Musiala, Leon Goretzka, and Leipzig’s midfield pivot of Konrad Laimer and Xavier Schlager were all booked as well.

The Bundesliga is back, and feisty as ever. Getting physically beat up by other teams was a bit of a hallmark of Bayern’s Hinrunde — and a factor to watch as the season continues, as it’s appeared to be an effective tactic.

An uneventful introduction can be a good thing.

Former Gladbach keeper Yann Sommer had a quiet introduction in Bayern Munich colors in the team’s 1-1 draw away at RB Leipzig on Friday. Head coach Julian Nagelsmann was pleased with the performance, which came on the heels of just one day’s training after Sommer completed his medical mid-week.

“Very good, brave. He intercepted three or four crosses,” Nagelsmann quipped after the game, via @iMiaSanMia. “To be honest, he didn’t have that much to save. But he played well with the ball. He has a good presence. It didn’t look like he was playing for the first game with us.”

Sommer is a keeper with a somewhat different style to the injured Manuel Neuer — but there are few in the world who can match the intrepid instincts of the OG sweeper-keeper extraordinaire. Still, his linkup with the Bayern back line should only improve with more match practice under their belts together — and who can forget all of the magnificent saves against FC Bayern which he’s pulled off in the past while still playing for Gladbach?

For all of Leipzig’s attacking thrusts, particularly in the second half, they rarely left Sommer calling upon the maximum of his shot-stopping abilities. Those tests are surely coming, though: it won’t be long before it’s Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé rolling into town with PSG in the Champions League. Bayern fans will be hoping their new goals saver still has a bit of that savior magic in him.

It’s match day! Bayern Munich vs. RB Leipzig...are you ready?

When Bayern Munich’s acquisition of Yann Sommer from Borussia Mönchengladbach finally went through, it represented a terrific solution to what was a serious problem.

Sven Ulreich, a fine player in his own right, might not be quite at the level needed to lead the team in its quest for a treble during the Rückrunde. Alexander Nübel, the club’s anointed “goalkeeper of the future”, had both logistical trouble and a lack of desire to leave AS Monaco early from his loan assignment.

Sommer was the best answer for the question on how to best proceed this season, but what happens moving forward? Manuel Neuer’s serious leg injury has left the club doubting the viability of his return and if he can return to any type of requisite quality.

With that, both Sommer and Nübel could be in play to suit up for Bayern Munich next season. Imagine a training camp with Neuer, Sommer, Nübel, Ulreich, and Johannes Schenk all vying for a roster position.

Things, undoubtedly, will get heated. For Sommer, he inked his deal with Bayern Munich prepared to armor-up and do battle with Neuer per some extensive reporting from Sport1’s Kerry Hau (as captured @iMiaSanMia):

Yann Sommer made it clear to Salihamidžić and Kahn that he would not shy away from competition with Neuer when the latter comes back, hence the contract until 2025. A departure in the summer is unlikely, especially since Neuer’s comeback date is unknown.

Sommer, who speaks both German and French — an undoubted advantage for any goalkeeper at Bayern Munich, is ready to stay and fight for a starting role. Meanwhile, despite his spurning of the club when it needed him most, Nübel is still firmly in the plans of Bayern Munich:

Bayern did not completely close the chapter of Alex Nübel yet due to his positive development in Monaco and also his age (26) compared to Neuer (36) and Sommer (34). Bayern rejected all permanent transfer enquiries for Nübel from Monaco and other interested clubs.

What does it all mean, though?

Well, it does not take much reading between the lines to see that Bayern Munich has some serious doubt that Neuer, who turns 37 in March, will be able to return in the type of form that would allow him to perform at the level that he has become known for.

The timetable for Neuer’s return is also a bit murky. By all accounts, this was a serious injury and while a break might heal on a specific timeline, there is no guarantee that Neuer’s mobility, agility, reflexes, and foot speed will not be impaired permanently.

As for Nübel, he already appears to be irritated with Bayern Munich and reluctant to return to any roster that includes Neuer (and maybe goalkeeper coach Toni Tapalović as well). Does adding Sommer to an already volatile mix makes things better in his mind? Probably not.

Meanwhile, Ulreich and Schenk will both be inside this battle, without a sword. Neither player will be considered for a starting role next season. Ulreich will likely be the No. 3 goalkeeper unless he opts to push for a transfer (why would he?) and Schenk can easily look around see why a loan assignment might not be such a bad idea for his own future.

So there you have it...Neuer vs. Sommer vs. Nübel. Who will be the last goalkeeper standing? We won’t know how that all plays out until Neuer is deemed healthy enough to return and Nübel ends his jaunt in France.

If you have a strong preference in what should be a fascinating battle, you might want to start flying your banners this summer. It could FC Hollywood drama at its finest.

Back in 1993 or so, Stone Temple Pilots became a fixture on Philadelphia’s rock and alternative rock stations (which were plentiful back in the day). Mostly known for the massive hit “Plush”, the “Core” album had some downright excellent tunes, including “Crackerman” — which hits hard immediately and never loses its pace:

I ended up seeing STP in concert (I am not a huge concert guy, so this tells you how big a fan I was of this album) in the summer of ‘94 and I will say, they were fantastic. The Meat Puppets opened for them (that’s a throwback, eh?).

Anyway, I hope you enjoy that look back at the past.

Entertainment Rundown

The Last of Us

I did it. I checked out HBO’s The Last of Us and this...is what I thought about it:

As always, I try to enter a new series with very little knowledge of it if there is an established story already. What does that mean? Well, I eschewed trying to learn anything about the video game that it was derived from.

I will say this, I loved opening scene where they actually just lay out that the world could potentially become zombified. It was a quick, easy way to differentiate itself from The Walking Dead immediately. Granted, I really liked how The Walking Dead tackled its reveal, but this was a good, effective way to let the audience know this was going to be a different type of zombie story.

The one thing that The Last of Us did was show that immediate frenzy after the outbreak really starts. In The Walking Dead universe, you had to hang in for the mess of a show that was Fear The Walking Dead to give you that.

I’m a big fan of Pedro Pascal and once again, he did not disappoint. He is pretty much rock solid in every role. As Joel, he definitely exudes the proper amount of desperation, anger, and bad ass-ery.

Anna Torv as Tess, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, and Bella Ramsey as Ellie also are intriguing in their roles.

From here, my review is a little less complimentary, but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t like it.

The storytelling and immediate flash forward were extremely rushed. Just as you are trying to get a feel for the characters, what makes them who they are, and how they are handling the initial outbreak and insanity that followed, you get slammed into the future. I was left wanting to see a lot more of that. There will likely be flashbacks aplenty showing everything, but in that episode, I just wanted a little more.

There are obviously a lot of unanswered questions about how things evolved from the outbreak in Austin, Texas to a makeshift dystopian society in Boston, Massachusetts. Things definitely transitioned too quickly for the viewer to truly absorb the motivations of the characters and why they were doing some of the things they were doing.

It just really felt as if the writers tried to cover too much in the opening episode.

Overall, it was an okay first episode. I love to be completely “wowed” by the premiere of a series, but I do acknowledge that not every show is capable of doing that for various reasons. Some require a longer burn. The Last of Us has potential to be very good or it could go off the rails and be a disaster. How this story is told is ultimately unknown at this stage, but there is some hope that quality acting and an interesting subject matter can guide the writing team to putting together a tighter storyline moving forward.

Predictions

Wow...there are a lot of moving parts right now for Bayern Munich. A lot of talent, but also a lot of uncertainty. Yann Sommer might or might not start, the starters at wing remain a mystery, Jamal Musiala is the new No. 10, and Thomas Müller might be on the bench.

How will the team function in a high-pressure environment against a good team? There is a lot to consider. Even against what seem might like challenging odds, Bayern Munich should prevail in this match.

It won’t be easy, but Leipzig is also making some adjustments with its own squad. As much as I have some doubt about how this will all work for Bayern Munich in the second half of the season, this match feels like a win...or at least a draw. I’ll go with a win as the squad will surely be more motivated and focused than it was against Red Bull Salzburg last week.
