Mane is self-critical and knows that he can be even better for Bayern.

Sadio Mane scored once and assisted twice in Bayern Munich’s comprehensive 6-2 win over FSV Mainz at the weekend in what was certainly up there with hi best performances in a Bayern shirt thus far.

Since his five-match barren run across all competitions without a goal, the Senegalese attacker has turned in six goals and three assists, relieving some of the pressure he had come under for the number of chances he was missing in front of goal.

Julian Nagelsmann made a point of lauding Mane in front of the rest of the squad shortly after he had finished second behind Real Madrid and France’s Karim Benzema in the Ballon d'Or rankings and had been quick to rubbish the suggestion his player was being too wasteful in attack. As his track record at Liverpool has shown, he’s the type of player that has the capability of snapping out of a rut in an instant, and that’s just what he’s done, though his scoring rut was synonymous with a collectively poor run from Bayern as a whole, not just him, specifically.

After the win over Mainz, in which Mane had a fantastic performance, the Senegal captain was still adamant that he can be much better for Bayern. “I’m here for the team, trying to score goals, provide assists and win games for the team. But I can always get better in everything. I can show more and more,” he said to kicker, via @iMiaSanMia.

Aside from Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s hot streak, Nagelsmann has employed systems that don’t contain a natural, outright striker, and Mane has often played as one of Bayern’s most advanced attackers during earlier stages of the Hinrunde. It showed how lethal it can be when Bayern scored 15 goals from their opening three Bundesliga matches, but they did eventually hit that wall when they went four matches without a league win.

Now that Choupo-Moting has found some form, Mane has been deployed more often as a left winger, his preferred position, as opposed to a central forward. He can play both positions and the versatility is something he said he loves being able to constantly learn and grow from. “I’m someone who wants to learn every day. I think I can still improve a lot - offensively, defensively. My position? I’ve played left winger my whole life. If the team needs me as a striker or right winger, I’ll be there,” he explained.

Bayern is on a hot streak across all competitions now, having stamped their authority as winners of Group C in the Champions League, booking their place in the round of 16 in the DFB-Pokal, and winning three Bundesliga matches on the bounce. Now, there is no room for complacency to creep in just before the World Cup break next month, as Mane alluded to. “We’re on the right track. We’ve had very good weeks. But we have to keep going at a high level and stay consistent,” he warned.

The current CEO and long-time Bayern No. 1 talks the current keeper’s return from injury.

Bayern Munich CEO Oliver Kahn knows a thing or two about goalkeeping — and managing the wear and tear that comes with it. Bayern’s lion between the sticks from 1994-2008, Kahn is one of the all-timers. After current #1 keeper Manuel Neuer missed another match against Mainz 05, the club executive shared some insights on what Neuer is dealing with right now.

“A shoulder injury is of course very, very painful,” Kahn said (via Az’s Maximilian Koch). “You have to deal with it intelligently and be careful not to put stress on it too early. But Manu is so experienced, he knows exactly how to deal with his body.”

Neuer, who suffered the injury in training prior to Der Klassiker on October 8th, initially used painkillers to get through the Borussia Dortmund game, which coach Julian Nagelsmann later admitted was probably “too early.”

Fortunately, there’s still some time for him to listen to what his body tells him and make his return slowly in advance of the World Cup. Per kicker, his status for the tournament is not currently questioned:

Will Bayern Munich bring back Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting next season?

Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić has been one of the observers marveling over Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting recent run of scorching hot form.

When it comes to Choupo-Moting’s future, Salihamidžić is sure that the club will engage in negotiations with the striker, but a lot will depend on what the 33-year-old wants to do. The crazy run of production that Choupo-Moting is on could be enough to open the eyes up of another club — one that might make him a financial priority.

“We’ll hold talks, nothing speaks against that. He’s someone who I think belongs here. We hope he stays here,” Salihamidžić sold Sky Sport Germany (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).

The summer of 2023 figures to be a busy one for Bayern Munich. With several moves likely to happen, the future of Choupo-Moting will certainly require at least some of the club’s attention.

The coach gives it up for his players in the midst of their recent hot streak.

Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann was effusive in his praise for his squad after another comprehensive performance — this time a 6-2 win against Mainz 05.

The tiniest hints of needs for improvement? Maybe, but don’t let that take away from the overall message: it’s been a glowing period for the Bavarians.

“I think we had difficult 5-10 minutes at the beginning of the first and second half,” Nagelsmann said in his post-game press conference (via @iMiaSanMia). “Otherwise we did really well. Big compliment to the team for performing this way every three days. It’s fun to watch — a mix of quality and attitude. Compliments to my players.”

Hats off, and thoroughly deservedly, too. Bayern are showing they mean business just as the business end of the Hinrunde comes around. And just as the series of struggles and dropped points earlier drove a burning need for self-improvement, so too do the fruits of that labor ignite the mood.

“That’s always nice,” Nagelsmann added, on the manner of the Mainz win. “It gives the players self-confidence. The players who came in did well, Benji — who also could’ve started today, Ryan, Mathys, Sabi, King. That speaks for the team.”

It’s been an expertly-managed phase for Nagelsmann, who has ridden Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s ascension to help juggle the playing demands of his talented, if injury-riddled squad. The players he mentioned — Benjamin Pavard, Ryan Gravenberch, Mathys Tel, Marcel Sabitzer, Kingsley Coman — are all superb talents who have starting qualities, but not the easiest path to minutes at the moment.

But with wins like this, everyone gets to feel good, and everyone gets an opportunity to show their stuff.

What a day for Bayern Munich!

When it comes to scoring, coaches often do not care who it comes from or how many different players are able to find the back of the net...they just want to see goals on the scoreboard.

Count Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann into that category.

Against, Mainz 05 on Saturday, Nagelsmann saw six different players from his squad put their names on the scoresheet in a 6-2 victory over Die Nullfünfer. Some young, some kind of old (for a footballer anyway), some starters, and some reserves.

It did not matter, the Bavarians were on fire. Serge Gnabry. Jamal Musiala, Sadio Mané, Leon Goretzka, Mathys Tel, and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting all score for Die Roten.

“That’s always nice. It gives the players self-confidence. The players who came in did well, Benji (Pavard) — who also could’ve started today, Ryan (Gravenberch), Mathys (Tel), Sabi (Marcel Sabitzer), King (Kingsley Coman). That speaks for the team,” said Nagelsmann.

Yep, that’s two more 3’s for the Bayern full-backs. Mazraoui’s ascension looks more and more permanent.

Sadio Mané — wow, what a player. He’s the best pure left-wing option for the team and it’s not close. Hard to imagine a different look for him within this team, and the other attackers will have to fit in around him.

Speaking of fitting in, will Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting ever sit again except for rotation? What’s going to happen when Leroy Sané, Jamal Musiala, and Thomas Müller are all healthy?

Bild were sparing at all of Sven Ulreich in this one — and his mistake in distribution near the end was especially head-scratching.

The only real surprise was Noussair Mazraoui over Benjamin Pavard. I am very curious as to what is going on with Pavard. He has arguably been Bayern Munich’s best defender this season, but not starting multiple games in a row makes me think of two things: 1 - Maybe he’s nursing a minor injury. 2 - Maybe he’s let the club know he’s moving on (huge leap, of course, but this is the kind of thing when a player makes it known to a club that is moving on).

Serge Gnabry’s 5th minute goal set the tone early. Bayern Munich had great energy and was immediately looking to attack. I loved seeing that.

Mainz 05 got very lucky not to be assessed a penalty for a handball early on.

The midfield tandem of Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka — when healthy — is arguably the top duo in the world. For the life of me, I don’t understand how players like Marcel Sabitzer and Ryan Gravenberch moved to Bayern Munich thinking they would be able to get a lot of playing time. It’s baffling to me...even now. Both Sabitzer and Gravenberch could make strong cases to be starters for most teams....just not Bayern Munich.

In the 28th minute, Jamal Musiala showed the world (again) just why he is the best young player in the world with his goal. Passing, movement, the placement of that shot....chef’s kiss.

Sadio Mané’s penalty was well-earned, but he should not be an automatic “taker.” He was very fortunate to get the rebound and put it away. Mané, however, was pretty damn good on the day overall.

The inept penalty taking continued with Jonathan Burkardt as Sven Ulreich was (incorrectly in my mind) assessed a penalty and then subsequently saved the PK. Mainz did end up scoring on the ensuing corner, though. Still, great effort from Ulreich. Kimmich let his man (Silvan Widmer) get ahead of him and put a subtle flick on the ball. Ulreich, however, did have a huge gaffe later in the match to set up Mainz for a goal.

About the only concerning thing from the match is that Matthijs de Ligt left at halftime with an injury, which could have been his hamstring. Benjamin Pavard entered the match to play center-back.

Goretzka was rewarded for his efforts with a goal of his own. Goretzka is really rounding into top form.

Alphonso Davies was oddly shaky on the day — despite doing much better in terms of keeping the ball.

Mathys Tel’s goal came as the result of him somewhat slowly cutting in, not being challenged, and ripping off a shot that deflected off of a defender. Not a bad bit of luck for the youngster. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting added another goal off of a nice feed from Kingsley Coman. There really was not much Bayern Munich could do wrong on the day.

Overall, Bayern Munich stayed scorching hot and dismantled a competitive Mainz 05 squad. It was not perfect, but it did not need to be on this day. Right now, Julian Nagelsmann is pushing all of the right buttons.

We review Bayern Munich’s 6-2 blowout win over Mainz 05.

Well, that was quite something. Bayern Munich blew past Mainz in a spectacular 6-2 win that say the Bavarians barely break a sweat throughout the full 90. While two goals were conceded and Bo Svensson’s men can comfort themselves with a high xG number, the fact is that Julian Nagelsmann coached this game almost to perfection and Bayern look as good as ever, despite injuries to key players.
