Oliver Kahn is all in on his prize coach and showing they're serious about building something together.

It may have “only” been FC Viktoria Plzeň, but Bayern Munich are in a good mood once again — sitting on a comfortable nine points in the Champions League group of death, and heading into Der Klassiker weekend having notched a commanding 4-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen the week prior. All those questions surrounding Julian Nagelsmann? You can lay them to rest now, if you haven’t done so already.

There’s politely-worded PR statements of confidence in times of tumult, often shortly precipitating a coach’s firing, and there’s a wholesale backing. The latter is what the Bayern brass have been emphasizing again and again with the manager they broke transfer fee records to acquire, and having passed the latest test, they’re happy to remind.

“We’re completely convinced of Julian,” said Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn after the Plzeň triumph, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “Of course it was clear to us that there could be difficult phases, but Julian learns very fast and has great qualities. We all believe in him.”

Perhaps the most analogous situation in European football is that of Arsenal FC — where a young, even less experienced manager than Nagelsmann in Mikel Arteta received total backing from the club’s board, through incomprehensible lows — and the board, to the disbelief of many, never wavered. They stuck with it until it was clear they really did mean it, and Arsenal are enjoying life now at the top of the Premier League.

Nagelsmann has been a coach before, but Bayern is the big time compared to his previous stops — statements like these make clear that the club don’t expect him merely to learn, success or fail, on his own, but are all in to help ensure it happens. It’s the productive sort of partnership that should lay the foundation for a stable future.

As a bonus? At Bayern, Nagelsmann didn’t have to endure lousy seasons, missing out on even Europa League (and Europa Conference League), or exile waves of top players to get here. He’s got not only the bosses in his corner, but the veterans in the dressing room as well. If he’s learning as they say — and there are changes evident in his tactics and his approach over the seasons — then Bayern may be rewarded with the blossoming of an astute coaching mind into one of the game’s elite managers of his generation.

At least, that's the hope.

Of course, life’s only smooth like this until the next inquest. But Bayern — and Nagelsmann — have navigated this latest rough patch with aplomb, and have emerged fangs bared, ready to tear apart any challengers. Bring on Borussia Dortmund.

“No longer the classic full-back” — Nagelsmann is allowing Davies to drift in centrally a lot more often now, to much success for Bayern.

Despite playing as a winger for the Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS making his move to Bayern Munich, Alphonso Davies has quickly established himself as one of Europe’s best left-backs and most promising young talents. His blistering pace almost gives Bayern an added insurance policy in terms of how far he can venture forward in attack, being able to rely on his pace alone to make recovery runs when needed to quell counter attacks from the opposition.

He helped lead Canada to the World Cup with his involvements in their CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers despite not having the greatest season for Bayern, though he did miss a fair bit of time due to his bout of myocarditis after having coronavirus. This season, he’s been a regular feature for Julian Nagelsmann at left-back — he only missed out on Bayern’s 7-0 win over VfL Bochum through a muscular problem.

He put in a solid, 45-minute shift in Bayern’s 5-0 win over Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League, during which Nagelsmann explained after the match that he had given the Canadian international some different tactical instructions. Nagelsmann revealed that he’s been having Davies drift more centrally to play through the middle of the pitch instead of always staying wide, near the touchlines. “I would pick Phonzy out. He now plays a lot through the middle, no longer the classic full-back who sticks to the sideline. I looked for a new position for him and found it,” Nagelsmann explained when he was asked about individual performances in the the win against Plzen (@iMiaSanMia).

While more central movements would sometimes occur for Davies in the circumstantial flow and happenstance of any given match, putting an emphasis on it to create different space for other players has been something that Nagelsmann really likes. Not only does it give other players more spaces to run into and attack, but it also makes Davies harder to defend and keep track of for Bayern’s opposition.

With that said, Nagelsmann is really pleased with the flexibility and tactical adjustability Davies has shown with these new, minor positional shifts. “He’s doing very well there and feels good about it. For me, that’s a really big step he’s taking in terms of flexibility. He can play on the wing, he can play through the middle. Therefore I’m very happy,” Nagelsmann commended.

Well who saw this coming? Group C just got spicier.

Catenaccio is alive and kicking

Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve just witnessed a calamity. In the year of our Lord, 2022, Catenaccio is still going strong. FC Barcelona got done in by the oldest trick in the book, and they didn’t even look threatening while doing it.

When Bayern Munich faced Barca at the Allianz Arena, the Catalans could go away knowing that they missed clear-cut chances. The same cannot be said about this game. Maybe Dumfries had a handball that could’ve been given by VAR, but Xavi and his men can’t complain about VAR all the time. Inter Milan put on a defensive masterclass, and it left the lesser FCB gasping for room to breathe.

Stefan de Vrij stuck to Robert Lewandowski like he owed him money. Ousmane Dembele constantly dribbled into a waiting defender. Pedri couldn’t find a hint of space to pass into. Honestly, as a Bayern fan watching this game, I had to wonder how our team got past this juggernaut of an Inter defense. And we did it TWICE, in a game most fans thought was mediocre.

Maybe Lewandowski is regretting his choice of destination?

Xavi has no plan B

Xavi looked on listlessly as his team succumbed to defeat against Inter Milan.

When things aren’t going their way, Barcelona don’t seem to have a way to respond. It happened against Bayern and it’s happened against Inter. Both teams scored first and stood resolute in defense, and Xavi’s side were unable to find any answers to some tough questions.

What exactly is the plan when Ousmane Dembele can’t find Robert Lewandowski with a cross? What happens if Pedri cannot roam into the box to provide support to the offense? What do you do when Lewy is marked so tightly that he’d find more space inside a black hole? Apparently, Xavi’s Barca has no idea.

They lack the brilliance of a player like Leo Messi, who could unlock defenses with a kind of magic no one else can muster. In more mortal terms, they lack the creative brilliance of a player like Thomas Muller or Kevin de Bruyne, who can find their way through thickets of defenders with some unorthodox plays.

When faced with Inter’s stout defending, Xavi’s Barcelona resorted to crossing inside the box, hoping Lewandowski gets to it. Effective in most situations, but hardly the most creative solution. He will want a proper answer before next week’s game at the Camp Nou.

League form =/= Champions League form

Group C’s teams are defying expectations in their CL campaign so far. Barcelona are flying in La Liga, but they’ve lost twice to both of the heavyweights in Group C and stand a decent chance of being knocked out. Inter are struggling in Serie A, but they played a decent game against Bayern and just pulled off a heroic win vs Barca at the San Siro. And of course, poor Viktoria Plzen — they haven’t even lost a game in the Czech league, but they’re looking outclassed in this group stage.

It just goes to show, football can be a really complicated sport.

Group C is looking a lot more interesting

Honestly, as a Bayern fan, it feels nice to be sitting high and dry at the top of the group with nine points, because we can look down and laugh at the dirty peasants beneath us. Of course, Inter just made things very spicy in the group. After MD2 of the Champions League, it looked like the Nerazzurri were practically destined for the Europa League, with the two FCBs set to duke it out for top spot. Now, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Barcelona will fall back to their home ground fortress for now. Assuming everyone takes their remaining points off Viktoria Plzen, that leaves Bayern with 12, Inter with 9, and Barca with 6 points. Even if Barca beat Inter at the Camp Nou, head-to-head or goal difference could become important tie breakers, and there’s always the chance that Bayern could lose to Inter in which case Barca would need a result against the Bavarians as well.

Currently, it looks like Bayern are favorites to qualify out of the group, but this does create a scenario where both Barca and Inter could pip Nagelsmann’s men to the Round of 16. If Barca beat Inter and Bayern lose their last two games (vs Barca and Inter respectively) then all three teams would end up on 12 points each. In that case, tiebreaker rules would apply, and the head-to-head would become important.

The “Group of Death” is living up to its billing. Julian Nagelsmann cannot afford to relax just yet.

What happens to Barca’s finances?

This is more morbid curiosity than anything else, but if Barca fail to qualify for the Round of 16, what happens to them financially? I’m sure I’m not alone in asking this question, because even Julian Nagelsmann questioned the Catalans’ financial dealings back in the summer.

If the unthinkable happens, and Barca drop into the Europa League, will they have to make some hard choices? Sell Pedri/Gavi? Pull more levers? Who knows. For now, let’s focus on the games in front of us.

Bayern Munich made short work of FC Viktoria Plzeň in the Champions League as the Bavarians put a 5-0 beatdown on their Czech visitors...how rude!

It was a thoroughly impressive effort from Bayern Munich in every aspect of the game. Here are some quick hitters on the match:

Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann went with a pretty standard starting XI given the known absences. The only mild surprise was Mathys Tel not getting the starting nod, but the boss has a lot of attacking talent that he needs to satisfy:

Uh, Leroy Sané is in one of his “on fire” phases and unleashed a rocket in the 7th minute to put Bayern Munich up 1-0 early. It was clear that the speed of the Bavarians was going to be an issue for FC Viktoria Plzeň — and that Sané’s electric play was going to be too much for the visitors to handle. Jamal Musiala had the assist.

Just six minutes later, Bayern Munich shook off FC Viktoria Plzeň’s first shot attempt and sprinted right back up the field for a goal from Serge Gnabry. This time, Leon Goretzka had the assist.

I think FC Viktoria Plzeň wanted to play a deeper block, but just got caught twice...and then a third time because Sadio Mané scored Bayern Munich’s third goal within the games first 21 minutes. Yup, it was going to be that type of game.

Bayern Munich was just buzzing and quickly pouncing on any opportunity to sprint forward. The FC Viktoria Plzeň squad had to be in “Not this (bleep) again” mode at that point.

The Bavarians were absolutely devastating when they barreled forward with reckless abandon. It was an impressive display. Any time FC Viktoria Plzeň had a sniff of an attack, it was quickly thwarted.

It’s tough to be too critical of anyone with Bayern Munich after that stomping, but I want Alphonso Davies to work on some on his passes in the final third. Sometimes he’ll do all the hard work and beat defenders, only to lob a cross into no man’s land.

On the day, though, both Davies and Noussair Mazraoui were strong.

Mané being offside is definitely an issue. I’m not sure if it is timing or just that the players have rotated so much that the “connection” is not quite there yet. His offside on a would-be goal for Musiala was more unlucky than sloppy, though. We are talking about a matter of millimeters.

Sané’s second goal (50’) pretty much iced it (admittedly, it was pretty frozen before that anyway).

Josip Stanišić and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting got some extended run as they both started the second half. Stanišić certainly needs the field time. Being so young, he still has very good potential.

Choupo certainly was flying around when he got his chance and scored off of a Goretzka assist.

Manuel Neuer had himself a pretty chill Tuesday. He could have brought a lawn chair and used it during various points of the match.

Overall, it is tough to glean much out of this one. There is not reason to get too high on this performance. Bayern Munich dominated the match from the outset and really never let up. FC Viktoria Plzeň was overmatched on this particular day and offered little resistance in even slowing down the Bayern Munich attack.

Bayern Munich’s plan to operate without someone who can play as a “true No. 9” has come under fire of late (though not as much against FC Viktoria Plzeň) as the team endured some struggles. While Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo might not be a striker in the same way that Robert Lewandowski or Erling Haaland play the position, he certainly knows how to score.

With the Red Devils making him available for the winter transfer window, would Bayern Munich re-consider its stance on adding the Portuguese legend?

Sometimes this is how the goals come, Sadio. We’ll take it!

Sadio Mané opened up his Champions League scoring account for Bayern Munich in their 5-0 over Viktoria Plzeň at the Allianz Arena. It was virtually one-way traffic from Julian Nagelsmann’s side and a wonderful night for Mané, who scored Bayern’s second goal and also provided a spectacular assist for Leroy Sané in the second half.

It was a debut Champions League goal for Mané and his seventh across all competitions in a Bayern shirt since making his move from Liverpool in the summer transfer window. After the match, however, Mané actually confessed that this goal was unintentional — he was actually trying to find a teammate!

“I actually wanted to pass. In soccer, you sometimes need a bit of luck,” he comically revealed (via Tz).

In the particular sequence for Mané’s goal, he had done exceptionally well to control Alphonso Davies’ throw-in to him, beat two Plzeň players with a cleverly lofted touch over the top of them, and trotted forward in possession just outside the box before there was a fortuitous deflection off of a Plzeň player that kept the ball in his path. By the looks on things, Mane was trying to play a little layoff pass to Leon Goretzka, who was close by to him on the edge of the area.

Once that stray touch from the Plzeň player put it right back at Mané’s feet, though, he made no mistake from just a few yards out!

Bayern now has two wins on the bounce after the international break, slightly quelling fears of a crisis when they went four matches without a win in the Bundesliga. They face one of their most difficult league tests of the season this weekend when they travel to the Westfalenstadion to take on Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker. Dortmund lost to FC Köln 3-2 last weekend themselves. Mané knows how difficult of a match it’s going to be but also realizes how equally important it is for Bayern to have their confidence back.

“That will be important, it’s good that we have our confidence back now. They have a big, full stadium. We expect a big game,” he said.

Bayern Munich smashed FC Viktoria Plzeň.

From the outset, it was clear that Bayern Munich was going to have its way with FC Viktoria Plzeň. Czech champions though they may be, they're a little outgunned in the Champions League — especially in a group that also features Inter Milan and FC Barcelona.

With superior talent, depth, and speed, the Bavarians were not going to waste any time in attacking their opponents — and they were going to do it right down the middle of the pitch.

“There’s already a lot about positioning. I won’t give everything away there. Basically, the goal is for the opponent to be on a line. And these gaps that then arise, we found them quite well,” Nagelsmann said (as captured by Tz).

When asked if this was core to his attacking philosophy, Nagelsmann wryly said, “One of my many.”

Clearly, Nagelsmann saw enough on film to know he was going to be able to have his team take advantage of FC Viktoria Plzeň in a very direct manner.

“It didn’t surprise us, we clearly analyzed the space,” Nagelsmann said.

Bayern made it a 3-0 group stage start to the 2022/23 Champions League campaign with a dominant win over the Czech champions.

Let’s make it a record

There you have it, FC Bayern Munich officially own the longest group stage win streak of all time. Tonight’s victory over FC Viktoria Plzeň made it 31 in a row, topping the previous record of 30 by Real Madrid between 2012 and 2017. Bayern continue their absolutely tremendous tear of wins in the group stage during the UCL. Let this be a warning for everyone. We may be struggling in the Bundesliga, but Bayern are a force in the Champions League and will remain that way for the foreseeable future.

Jamal Musiala, take a bow

Jamal Musiala has, I think, officially superseded Thomas Müller as the unquestioned offensive starter for Julian Nagelsmann. He was all over the place today, providing crucial buildup play and even a rather brilliant assist on Bayern’s first goal in the 7th minute. Still putting aside the fact he is only 19, Musiala has been nothing short of a brilliant diamond for Bayern and is the key for Champions League success under Nagelsmann. Just like Louis van Gaal and Thomas Müller, we might look back at Julian Nagelsmann as the man who unlocked Jamal Musiala.

Leerrooyyy Sannnnééé

You too, Leroy. Take a bow! I’m not sure what Nagelsmann has put in Sané’s wheaties but whatever it is, it is working! You’re looking at the current* Champions League joint scorer hitting his 4th goal in 3 games earlier today. For a team that has had so many questions around them in the Bundesliga, Bayern is a whole different beast in the Champions League — with an in-form Musiala, Leroy Sané and now Sadio Mané leading the charge.

His gameplay tonight was extraordinary. While he got two goals, it was more than that which was showcased tonight. His movement, finding the necessary holes and space, and his driving ability with the ball all were on display for the world to see. And below, you’ll see the highlight of the game: a sublime pass by Mané and an even better touch by Sané. World soccer, watch out. Sané is back.

Rotation in effect

Nagelsmann showed some savvy rotation tonight vs FC Viktoria Plzeň and it paid off. Matthijs de Ligt and Dayot Upamecano played excellently together and I could see them becoming a staple center-back pairing for the foreseeable with Lucas Hernandez banged up.

Noussair Mazraoui got some valuable minutes and while he was far from excellent, he showcased valuable qualities as Benjamin Pavard’s primary back up. With Müller and Joshua Kimmich out due to Covid, Ryan Gravenberch and Leon Goretzka got the start in the midfield. Goretzka provided a couple of timely assists and Gravenberch got valuable minutes as well.

While Gravenberch still needs to showcase the quality to be a starter, his play was very optimistic tonight. Getting rotational players on will be beneficial in the long run — and the World Cup is under two months away.
