The Austrian has fought for his place in the starting XI

Bayern Munich midfielder Marcel Sabitzer has turned things around in his second season in the south of Germany. He has established a great partnership with Joshua Kimmich in the middle of the park and has proved doubters wrong by showing that he can still be an important player on the team.

Sabitzer spoke out publicly for the first time in months after the agonizing 1-1 draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach and touched on how he has done since the beginning of the season. “It was clearly communicated that I wanted to fight my way through and attack again. That was my clear goal before the preparation. I did that in every training session. It’s been going really well so far,” said Sabitzer (as captured by Abendzeitung). “If you’ve been here a year, then you know how the place works. Then you can classify situations better. I knew I didn’t have much to lose. It actually only got better. I’m really motivated and I’m happy to be here for the season.”

Sabitzer wasn’t only good in the Gladbach game, but in all of the games the season so far. Sabitzer is tasked with defending while Kimmich roams forward to join the attack – a perfect combination according to the Austrian. “Jo is a top player in the position. We complement each other very well. He can also step forward a lot. I’m happy to have his back”, Sabitzer said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). Teammates Dayot Upamecano and Lucas Hernandez were also praised by Sabitzer: “We conceded few goals. It’s fun to be on the pitch.”

Club legend and vice-captain Thomas Müller also noticed Sabitzer’s performances and singled him out for praise. “Sabi is playing a great role at the moment. He’s snappy in duels, so he has Josh’s back free”, praised the Raumdeuter. “He’s absolutely grippy and feels good, I think.”

Sabitzer said that time was needed for him and the rest of the team to click. “After a year you grow together even more, everyone knows how to tick. I feel very comfortable in the team, I have a lot of good guys around me,” Sabitzer clarifies. “It’s fun with them - with Manu (Neuer), with Jo and Serge (Gnabry), with Stani (Josip Stanisic). These are my closest guys.”

We’ll be expecting more good games from you, Sabi. Keep it up!

Sommer defied the odds to preserve a 1-1 draw on matchday four of the Bundesliga. The post-shot xG picture shows just how heroic his performance was.

Courtesy of Squawka, Borussia Mönchengladbach keeper Yann Sommer’s incredible performance against Bayern Munich has been visualized into a graphic format.

The Gladbach keeper’s monumental performance consisted of more than a few heroics — which can be seen by the remarkable post-shot xG color gradient of the shots that were from little more than point-blank range. It was really a peppering of the goal, shots fired from every which way and from every distance. It’s no wonder that many Bayern players, as well as their coach, have mused that this was one of the team’s strongest performances of the year — despite the 1-1 result.

Which dots were which? Well, among just the close range efforts there was the double save on Sadio Mané; Leroy Sané’s 1-on-1 moment; two Thomas Müller headers and one from Dayot Upamecano. A cluster of three in the right half-space outside the box that might all belong to Benjamin Pavard. Some of Matthijs de Ligt’s forays forward as the last-ditch center-forward must be here as well — it’s a pity the map isn’t interactive or labeled.

Bayern’s varied attack is living up to its promise, and surely there won’t be too many more performances like Sommer’s this season. Still, a draw is a draw — and the result has likely raised some questions, if every so slightly, about how invincible Bayern really are, especially when they allow themselves to fall to a 0-1 deficit.

Football is a constant tug-of-war between offensive tactics and defensive counter-measures. That it took a performance like Sommer’s to score a point off the Bavarians shows how far Julian Nagelsmann’s attack is currently in the ascendancy. If they can keep up the relentlessness — maybe even better their sync and interplay — then woe to the next opponents who manage to snatch the first goal against Die Roten.

Standards are so high at Bayern, one goal feels much like nil.

Oh, the look on Thomas Müller’s face when ESPN ‘s Archie Rhind-Tutt misspoke in the sideline interview after the Borussia Mönchengladbach match and asked him: “Can you believe that [Bayern Munich] didn’t score today?”

“We scored!” he exclaimed, face lighting up instantly.

But it did feel like a scoreless loss from the Bayern perspective, didn’t it? After peppering Gladbach keeper Yann Sommer’s goal all night long — thirty-three shots, twenty on target, two offside goals not included among the stats — the Bavarians could only escape their once-again nemesis with a one-all draw.

“When we play a game like this, the goalkeeper of the opponents gets a lot of chances to be a superstar,” Müller said. “But he took it, and he did a great job again. Always when we play against Gladbach, Yann Sommer!...

“But in the end, we gave him too much chances to make saves. Our quality in front of goal was not the best today. It was okay! We had solid shots, but not perfect shots.”

When Rhind-Tutt pressed on and asked what made Gladbach such apparent bogeymen — Angstgegner — Müller was quick to correct the tone.

“No, no Angstgegner!” Müller said, laughing. “Okay, the results — I know what you mean. But when you watch the game again, I don’t [think] anybody will say ‘Angstgegner’. We don’t play with fear!”

Ever the captain and leader, Müller always seems to find just the right things to say: giving credit where it’s due, driving his teammates on to improve to ever higher levels, but choosing positives to build from.

“Some days are days like this; that’s a good thing in football,” Müller said of the result. “But we had a great game, a great intensity, great attitude...we didn’t score enough goals, it was our fault.
Bayern Munich is officially Charlie Brown, Gladbach is Lucy, and Yann Sommer is the football.

Die Folgen: Bayern’s 1-1 draw with Gladbach (Bavarian Football Works)

That’s it...I’m convinced that Borussia Mönchengladbach and Yann Sommer have delved into the dark arts to cast a spell against Bayern Munich whenever the Rekordmeister squares off against Die Fohlen.

Whatever the case, Gladbach did it again and stifled Bayern Munich into a draw in what was a truly bizarre game. Here are some quick hitters on the match:

The starting XI for Julian Nagelsmann did not really feature any surprises. Matthijs de Ligt went back to the bench, while Alphonso Davies stepped back into the starting XI.

It’s weird...I felt Bayern Munich was thoroughly dominant, but there was just something missing in the final third for the squad. One costly mistake was really all it took. Per Sofascore.com, Bayern Munich had an astounding 33 shots and 69% of the possession...yet still only came away with a 1-1 draw. Totally maddening...

There is no reason to think Bayern Munich’s attack is going to face many teams that will be able to keep them off the scoreboard, but every time it happens, there will absolutely be questions about the team’s lack of a true No. 9. It’s inevitable, whether any of us agree or disagree with it. The local media will make it a focal point of discussion.

For the man who made that aforementioned defensive miscue, Dayot Upamecano, it was really the only major mistake of the match for him, but one that made some folks automatically remember the Frenchman’s up-and-down 2021/22 season. With De Ligt on the bench, just waiting for a chance, those kinds of mistakes could give the coaching staff an incentive to make a change.

Marcus Thuram showed he can still be a handful on that play as well. Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidžić storming off after that play was interesting. Manuel Neuer didn’t really give Upamecano much help on that play either, with a questionable angle as he tried to make a play.

This was probably also Lucas Hernández’s least efficient game of the season — though he wasn’t bad. That just shows you how good he has been. I’m guessing we’ll see De Ligt and Pavard at center-back against Viktoria Köln (though Pavard could also get rested completely).

Sadio Mané has been a fantastic acquisition for Bayern Munich...there is no doubt about that. However, he does have to get a little more synced up with his timing (it will happen) so he can avoid those offside calls that have been just about the black mark on his record so far.

I don’t want to say Florian Neuhaus was bad (he wasn’t), but his game definitely stagnated to a point where he is definitely not a player who would be on Bayern Munich’s radar.

I thought each of Bayern Munich’s attackers were good on the day. Maybe not efficient enough to score more, but good.

Using De Ligt as a No. 9 is not really anything to panic about and it wasn’t a bad idea given how good he is with headers. I would, however, like to see more of the Dutchman in the starting XI at his natural position.

Sommer was great again, wasn’t he?

It’s arguably the group of death this year as at least one big club WILL find itself dumped into the Europa League this season. Of course, that just gives us more juicy games to talk about.

Here are our talking points from the draw:

The trouble with not getting an English Premier League team in the draw this season.

How the FC Barcelona draw concerns us this season.

The importance of Barca’s new additions, especially Robert Lewandowski.

Why Inter Milan is a deceptively tough tie despite being a Serie A team.

How this could be the “Group of Death” for this campaign.

How should Julian Nagelsmann tackle the group stage? Shouldn’t Bayern top the group?

Could Plzen pull off something against the bigger sides in the group? Upsets incoming?

More terror at the prospect of facing Robert Lewandowski and questions about Bayern’s defense.

Arguments about the type of striker Romelu Lukaku is, and an Upamecano vs Lukaku debate.

A look at the rest of the draws of the Bundesliga teams. How many German teams will qualify?

The new and improved Sabitzer is an exciting thing to see.

When Marcel Sabitzer arrived at Bayern Munich in 2021, he didn’t really live up to the hype, fans were unimpressed, and was on the verge of being sold. Then his agent came out and said that Sabitzer will stay and prove his worth. This season, the Austrian midfielder did just that.

Partnering Joshua Kimmich in the pivot, Sabitzer has been one of Bayern’s most reliable players. He may not be flashy, but he does his job and gets it done. Abendzeitung’s Maximilian Koch (@Koch_AZ) captured Sabitzer saying that he had a plan to influence the game and what he feels about his string of starts.

Sabitzer has bounced back and became an important player for the team

“It was my clear goal before the preparation to assert myself here, to attack. I’m glad I’ve played so much so far”, Sabitzer said. “I knew I had nothing to lose - things could only get better. I’m really motivated.”

Sabitzer starting most of the games is a real confidence booster for him after a lackluster first season at the club (Is “first season syndrome” gonna be a thing now, or is it already a thing?). Hopefully he’ll build on this bright start and establish himself a permanent spot in the starting XI.

There’s one thing that Sabitzer still needs to do at Bayern: score one of his outrageous long shots. If only he tried to do that more recently.

Okay, maybe not. But it is true that Gladbach have not lost to Bayern. And given the kind of performances we’ve been enjoying lately, that is quite an achievement. Yann Sommer saved 20 shots in what could be the greatest performance by a keeper in the history of the Bundesliga.

Here are our talking points from the game:

A very short mental breakdown to preface the pod.

Why Yann Sommer deserves the credit for this result.

A quick recap of what happened in the game.

Could Robert Lewandowski have changed this result? Did Nagelsmann subbing on Matthijs de Ligt mean he needs a CF?

Why Julian Nagelsmann’s tactics cannot be blamed for this result.

The referee was horrible. That is all.

Why Thomas Muller remains one of the most effective players on the pitch, despite a lack of recent goals/assists.

Manuel Neuer will not let Bayern Munich get caught up in dropping points to Gladbach.

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has seen this happen before.

Yup, Borussia Mönchengladbach gave the Rekordmeister fits once again, but Neuer does not feel like the team should beat itself up over the result.

”We can’t knock ourselves much, except for the way we finished our chances. We played well, piled the pressure on and created loads of chances. We can be satisfied with the way we played, but not with the result. Gladbach defended very deep,” Neuer told FCBayern.com. “The whole stadium was on the edge of their seats until we finally scored. The fans were behind us the whole time. We’re looking forward to the weeks packed with games now, it’s important that we make use of our squad depth.”

Neuer knows with so many games coming up that he the team will have plenty of chances to show that it can overcome difficult opponents.

There were positives for Bayern Munich on the day, but Thomas Müller wasn’t happy with the result.

Despite a very strong — if not dominant — performance against Gladbach, do not expect Bayern Munich’s Thomas Müller to feel too thrilled about the match ending in a 1-1 draw.

“It certainly must have been a great game to watch, it also felt good out on the pitch. But the longer it is after the game, the more dissatisfied I am with the result. If you need this many chances to score just one goal, we have to take a step back and look at ourselves. But the pros do outweigh the cons; we played in such a way that Gladbach hardly had a shot on goal,” told FCBayern.com. “We’re looking ahead to the multiple games in a week now. We want to continue this good vein of form and make ourselves and especially our spectators happy.”

Müller clearly thought his side should have come away with more goals after such a strong showing, but don’t expect the Raumdeuter to feel bad for too long. With a DFB-Pokal match against Viktoria Köln occurring midweek, Bayern Munich will not have time to sulk.
