Ever humble, Mané is the first to congratulate his teammates and the last to take credit for himself. Here’s his sideline interview after the game, partially transcribed.

“What a game, I have to say. I’m really happy and proud of the boys.”

That’s forward Sadio Mané, speaking to the media on the sidelines after collecting a brace in Bayern Munich’s comprehensive 7-0 display against VfL Bochum this past Sunday. Ever low key and team-oriented, Mané is already embodying everything Mia san Mia on and off the pitch for the German record champions — scoring goals while sharing in the glories, and not getting too far ahead of himself.

You can watch the full video interview here on ESPN FC; we’ve transcribed most of it below for those who’d rather read:

On his disallowed goal:

“Of course, I scored a first goal...and all of a sudden it was handball. But obviously it was handball, and yeah, myself, I knew it before.”

We love an honest guy! Mané’s sheepish grin and wink said it all. We’ll have to double check the replay — I thought the gesture was at his teammate — but ESPN FC reported that the wink was for the linesman. The goal, initially ruled good, was overturned by VAR.

On his make-up goal soon after:

“Of course when Kingsley had the ball with [the] counter-attack, I knew that I would get a goal, because we train every day together and I know him very well.

For me, it was a very easy goal, because the pass was for me, the more difficult. So me I’m just lucky, and scored a goal!”

The end product may have been a matter of course, but that fight-back spirit after having one disallowed just moments prior — in a game where one may have been forgiven for starting to coast, or look forward to half-time — shows what he’s all about.

On taking the penalties for Bayern after never having scored one in the Premier League:

“Everything [is] new. I come to [a] new league, I’m shooting the penalties so I’m really happy, and hopefully I’m gonna score more penalties for the team.”

Mané, of course, did not take penalties at Liverpool — his only PK attempt during his time in the Premier League came for Southampton, against Liverpool, on which occasion he was denied. But at Bayern, he’s Robert Lewandowski’s heir apparent in this regard.

On Bayern’s dominating start:

“Just unbelievable, but it’s not surprise for me. The way we train I think is high, high, high level...the intensity we put in the training, everything we do with intensity, I think it pays off...I think we have a very very good coach, the ideas he has is very incredible, so it’s very difficult for the other teams to cope with us.”

Unlike some of the other newcomers to the squad in this transfer window, Mané has trained for years under Jürgen Klopp — and likely knows a thing or two about intensity. Perhaps that experience is a key factor in his instant acclimation in Bavaria.

On the upcoming test against Borussia Mönchengladbach:

“Of course I know a little bit about [Gladbach]. Very good team...[in the] last years, they’ve been playing Champions League. I know how difficult it is to play against them, but we’re going to start the game like we did today. Even though we know it’s a different opponent — but we are Bayern, so hopefully we’re gonna do our best to win the game and make our fans proud.”

Bayern face Gladbach this Saturday at home, with kickoff at 12:30pm ET. See you all here!

Matthijs de Ligt’s well-rounded game won’t take away from defensive commitment at Bayern Munich.

Matthijs de Ligt was ecstatic to score his first goal for Bayern Munich against VfL Bochum, but the Dutchman does not want anyone to get the wrong impression.

The 23-year-old might truly be a weapon in the box, but there is nothing he likes more as a defender than helping his squad get a clean sheet.

”If you score a goal as a defender, that’s great, but of course you also want to keep a clean sheet too, which was important. We did very well as a team. We were good in the press and we were relentless. That’s how you score seven goals,” De Ligt told FCBayern.com (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).

When moving to Bayern Munich, de Ligt commented that he wanted to play with a club that had more of an offensive philosophy and what many ascertained to mean a more fun brand of football.

What a performance for Bayern Munich!

Die Folgen: Bayern’s 7-0 thrashing of VfL Bochum (Bavarian Football Works)

Bayern Munich dismantled VfL Bochum 7-0 in an insanely dominant effort, despite missing quite a few key players — some expected to miss, some not. It might not have mattered who was in the lineup, though, as Bayern Munich’s depth is proving to be a problem for its opponents.

Here are some quick hitters on the match:

The starting lineup was about what we expected once we found out Alphonso Davies was banged up:

Davies going down with a muscle injury allowed Julian Nagelsmann to shift some things around, but as you can tell...it all worked.

If you had placed a bet that Leroy Sané was going to score a right-footed screamer within the first few minutes of the game, you can probably cash that ticket and become a rich person. Sané’s 4th minute tally was outstanding and it got the ball rolling for a rout:

Class goal from Bayern Munich with the finish from Leroy Sane pic.twitter.com/OiFGdZ5bNL
— ESPN FC (@ESPNFC) August 21, 2022

The amazing thing about that goal is that we so rarely see Sané use his right foot effectively; it made it even more of a surprise.

This Bayern Munich team is very tight-knit — see how the squad rallied around Sané after he scored. Even the people competing with him for playing time were genuinely happy for him.

In the 25th minute, Matthijs de Ligt officially made his first Bundesliga start pretty memorable as he put Bayern Munich up 2-0 with a header goal. I thought De Ligt was the team’s best defender on the day as well.

You know...I felt Thomas Müller had a very “meh” showing. On this team — with this attacking depth — it feels like a “meh” performance might not keep you in the starting XI for long. Given Müller’s age and with this being a World Cup season, the veteran will need more rest anyway, but he is going to be pushed on a weekly basis for his starting position.

Kingsley Coman put Bayern Munich up 3-0 in the 33rd minute and I think you could really argue that Coman was the squad’s best overall player against VfL Bochum. For me, it was a three-man race between Sané, Coman, and De Ligt.

Just when you thought VfL Bochum might escape into the locker room only down 3-0...Sadio Mané decided it was time to tack on a fourth goal (42nd minute) in the first half.

The second half would not really be much better for the home side.

Mané (PK in the 60th minute), an own goal (69th minute), and Serge Gnabry (76th minute) finalized the scoring for Bayern in what was a thoroughly dominant outing.

It was good to see Josip Stanišić get some much needed field time and also for Gabriel Vidović to get credited with an assist.

Overall, Bayern Munich was just unreal. The attack was relentless, the defense was stifling, and Nagelsmann didn’t try to roll out a 2-1-1-3-1-2 formation...so, all is GOOD!

Julian Nagelsmann’s Bayern Munich are almost too good to be true.

The water in VfL Bochum’s Vonovia Ruhrstadion smelt of blood, and the great white sharks arrived to feast. Bayern Munich came to VfL Bochum with the want, maybe the need to stamp their dominance and put back into their place a feisty team that had stunned them 4-2 in the previous season. The Bavarians did just that, slamming seven goals past a Bochum granted no respite — and it might have been eight; Sadio Mané’s goal was disallowed due to handball but his arm was in as natural a position as possible. It was a thorough demolishing and a real showcase of what Julian Nagelsmann has been building towards with all his tactical shifts in the last year or so.

This season is set to be the most match-congested in the history of football with a World Cup slammed slap bang in the middle of winter. As such, fitness and rotation are at the fore on every team’s minds.

Jamal Musiala was confirmed out earlier in the week, with Nagelsmann confirming that it was about minimising risks — and that if it were an important game, Musiala would have been fit to play. Serge Gnabry did play but was also held out of the starting lineup after an apparently minor wrist injury, and Alphonso Davies was a late, possibly also precautionary scratch. Still, Bayern reshuffled their lineup for the first time this season.

The team adapted extremely well to the changes, and I think it is paramount that the team learn to work together in these different combinations. As the English weeks approach — and midweek fixtures cram the schedule — rotation will be the name of the game.

Two of the most prominent changes in the starting XI were the absences of Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry, with Leroy Sané and Kingsley Coman replacing them. Bayern didn’t miss a beat.

From the very beginning it was evident that Sané was switched on, and it only took him four minutes to get on the scoresheet, assisted by none other than Coman himself. These two would run the game throughout the 90 with quick passes, interchanges and especially in the press. The attack as a whole has really refined the art of quick bursts of pressing that force the opposition into making ugly decisions, and this went gangbusters today. I honestly could not pick out my man of the match today but both of these players are strong contenders. Coman may have it given for a goal and 2 assists as well as winning a penalty but Sané was as dangerous, with multiple key passes — even if some of the ensuing finishes left a lot to be desired.

The only real problem I had with this setup was that it left Thomas Müller stranded at times. As the full backs were not as aggressive up the pitch as usual, Sané and Coman had to drift wider to stretch the defense. With Mané dropping to collect and recycle play, this often left Müller alone and having to rely on his very patchy hold-up play to contribute and get involved with the ball.

Ever since that fateful day where Serge Gnabry came off the bench against Freiburg and was meme’d on in our match thread only to score with his first touch of the game, he was christened with the nickname of ‘FINISHER/INITIATOR’, a graphic that was still displaying when he put the ball in the back of the net.

This game, Gnabry would strike from the bench once again, first playing a delicious through ball to Sané which would be deflected into the net by Bochum’s own Cristian Gamboa, before receiving a pass from Vidović only to shoot first time and score from a frankly unbelievable angle. That finish had me malfunctioning trying to comprehend the geometry of it! Suffice it to say, the FINISHER/INITIATOR is going nowhere.

I mentioned in an earlier article how I really wanted to see Joshua Kimmich unchained from his responsibilities as a screening midfielder. Today, I got to see just that.

With Marcel Sabitzer providing defensive support and the presence of more limited full backs, Kimmich was given license to kill, and boy did he go for the throat. His passes were simply put, magnificent. His balls over the top into the final third and even his balls from central spaces to the wingers — specifically Coman who was unmarked for large periods of the game — were a treat to watch. More of this pairing please, Nagelsmann!

Similarly and rather surprisingly, the defense has been just as rock-solid. The only goal Bayern Munich have conceded in the Bundesliga this season so far has been due to an individual error from Manuel Neuer. The defense has been practically flawless, with Manuel Neuer being the only real worry, as he has made individual errors in almost every game so far with his distribution. Neuer also made some questionable dietary choices, palming a mid-game banana in his keeper’s gloves today.

Overall, though, going forward and getting back — there just looks to be no stopping this Bayern machine.

He challenged Lucas Hernández for pace and required a last-ditch, perfectly timed tackle to cut out the chance. At 31’, he sent a wonderful cross to find Philip Hofmann in front of Manuel Neuer’s goal. But of course, his team didn’t get on the scoresheet at all and a few minutes later, were punched down into the turf.

Der Kaiser: Dayot Upamecano

Tidy, steady, and stout at the back, important in distribution going forward. Yes, Matthijs de Ligt had the goal, but Upamecano had the more consistent performance, especially in his defensive involvements on a day where Bochum did play enterprising football. Per sofascore, Upamecano won five duels to lead the Bayern defenders and made three tackles, while De Ligt left his partner scrambling on one of Bochum’s terrific chances to deny Manuel Neuer a clean sheet. Upa is continuing a strong second season in Munich.

Fußballgott: Joshua Kimmich

Typical mastery from Kimmich, Bayern’s beating heart in the heart of midfield. Kimmich was most influential going forward — distributing from slightly more advanced positions with incredible weight on his chipped balls and pinged passes over the top. Kimmich was also arriving late to the edge of the box to latch on to shooting chances of his own. Everything was humming for Bayern today and as usual, Kimmich was at the center of it.

Der Bomber: Sadio Mané

How do you choose on a day like this? Kingsley Coman was outstanding on the right wing and the top producer (one goal, two assists) but Sadio Mané cannot be overlooked. For a long time it looked like another game where Mané wouldn’t see commensurate rewards for his work rate, energy and smart movement — also his role to drop deep in midfield and be the extra man to receive the ball in Bayern’s build-up.

Mané was hard done by a VAR decision that struck off a wonderfully bundled-in goal for handball. But then he simply grabbed his goal minutes later, and capped his day off with a coolly slotted penalty and a broad smile.

Meister of the Match: Leroy Sané

A mesmerizing performance from a man on a mission. Sané brings something different to the left wing / left attacking midfield, with speed to burn into the forward line — rewarded ultimately with Cristian Gamboa’s own goal. As a creator, Sané always kept a cool head, calmly keeping the attacking moves flowing by picking out the right player at the right time. And of course, in front of goal he was lethal — a missile of a finish in just the fourth minute, a rocket that narrowly missed not long after. The possessions did not always flow through him, but the biggest moments of danger seemed to.

There was ferocity and intent in every action, on the ball or in the press. Sané is a monstrous talent and showed he could do it all today. He was Bochum’s focus on defense, Bayern’s most pressed player — but simply took over the game. A dominant display.
