Hopefully, it will get better for Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich wrapped up a 1-0 victory over Kawasaki Frontale in unimpressive fashion and manager Thomas Tuchel said fatigue was the reason why things have not looked great so far during the preseason tour of Asia.

“Today’s game could have ended 7-2. I thought we could take a bigger step forward. But we trained a lot and are very tired. We’re flying to Singapore tomorrow and will try to show further development against Liverpool,” Tuchel said (as captured by Abendzeitung’s Patrick Strasser and posted by @iMiaSanMia).

While Tuchel can talk about his team’s potential to score seven goals, the reality is that the team’s offense still is missing a figurehead. In the coming days, Bayern Munich could get that player in Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane, but if something were to happen to that potential transaction, it could be another frustrating season for the attacking group in Bavaria.

Creating opportunities is nice, but finishing is king.

Later, Tuchel reiterated his point about fatigue and noted the squad’s attack was very inefficient as well.

“The opponent had a better start, our legs were still a bit heavy. Then we controlled the game very well. We created chances in the second half. At the moment we are taking steps forward, I thought maybe today we could take a little bigger step,” Tuchel said to FCBayern.com (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “It’s doesn’t help if we’re too impatient. We’ve trained a lot and are tired. Tomorrow we fly to Singapore and try to show further improvement there against Liverpool.”

MDL probably thought he was being diplomatic (which he was, to an extent ...)

When Matthijs de Ligt left Juventus, the breakup was rather painless. Bayern Munich made an offer, Juve accepted, and Chelsea were left looking stupid (as usual). The whole affair was wrapped up in a matter of weeks, which is frighteningly quick for a transfer of this magnitude.

Of course you can’t have an FCB transfer without some drama (it’s in the FIFA bylaws somewhere) so, shortly after his move became final, De Ligt stirred the pot by explaining his reasons for leaving Juventus. His specific quotes about the playstyle rankled a significant chunk of the Juventus fanbase, as can be seen in the looooooong chain of quote tweets sparked by this @iMiaSanMia thread:

de Ligt: "I joined Juventus with the idea of playing a bit more attacking football because Sarri was the coach and he played amazing football in Napoli and Chelsea.
So in an interview with Telegraaf, the Dutchman decided to set the record straight. It’s always a good idea to do an interview in your native language in order to minimize the chances of something being lost in translation. However, the player’s statements are unlikely to soothe any fans of his former team, as he basically just said the same thing and also admitted that Juventus was always intended as a stepping stone. Ouch.

Don’t believe me? Don’t think it’s that bad? Read it for yourself.

When you START an interview by saying “I don’t mean it in a negative way”, then you know what you’re saying will be interpreted negatively. Despite this, De Ligt continued to elaborate, trying to remain as neutral as possible. From a certain point of view, he did succeed.

“At Bayern it’s very physical and intensive because of the pressure and constant pushing,” said the defender. “In Italy it’s more like a game of chess, it’s much more tactical. I’m very happy I was able to experience that (at Juve) and play that way, because I learned a lot from it.”

“The reason I went to Juventus was to become a better defender, even though there were differences with the Dutch national team. At Juventus I often had to stay in my position. At Bayern, I want to get my Ajax game back again.”

“Nagelsmann’s playing style is much closer to what Louis van Gaal asks of his defenders: defending high, applying high pressure, connecting well and playing forward a lot. I think it’s a move that can be good for the Dutch national team and my chances there.”

The defender added that he didn’t ask LvG on advice for his move, but the former Bayern coach still recommended it. Finally, he addressed an accusation by former teammate Leonardo Bonucci that he had been disrespectful to the club.

“I said in June that — as the club itself thinks — finishing 4th twice in a row with Juventus is not good enough. That was not an attack on Juventus. Not at all, because I will always have the utmost respect for this club.”

“For me it was just a fact that no one could be satisfied, that the bar had to be raised, including myself. Maybe it was taken out of context or came across incorrectly. I will never forget how my ex teammates helped me in my development as a footballer and as a person.”

You have to wonder if his ex-teammates will buy that explanation. Either this closes the book on MDL’s tenure at Juventus, or we’ll have to revisit this again someday down the line. In the meantime, De Ligt should work on getting into Nagelsmann’s starting XI. For someone who talks so highly about the way football is played in Germany, he hasn’t exactly experienced much of it so far.

Never mind Lewy, how to replace Omar Richards is the hottest question of the summer.

Bayern Munich have an interesting plan developing at left-back this season. Per Sport1’s Kerry Hau, there will be no direct backup for Alphonso Davies after Omar Richard’s transfer to English Premier League club Nottingham Forest, and 16-year-old Paul Wanner will get some work there as part of an effort to diversify the youngster’s skillset.

Instead, Lucas Hernández will be the first option to shift wide, as he has done in the past.

As Sport1 noted, Hernández played left-back under Hansi Flick and also still does for the French national team. He had a memorable battle with Joshua Kimmich in last summer’s EURO matchup between Germany and France. And he’s also played the position for Nagelsmann at times in Davies’ absence, in games where Bayern utilized four at the back.

Nagelsmann does have another card up his sleeve, however, and it’s youngster Paul Wanner:

Top talent Paul Wanner, actually based in attacking midfield, is repeatedly used on the left defensive side (sometimes in 4-2-2, sometimes in 3-5-2) in 11-on-11.

Primarily for personnel reasons. As one of only four “true” left-footers in the squad, Wanner is the most likely candidate for the Richards role, especially since his crosses are very precise and well-timed, as was evident during the training camp in the USA.

The other left-footed players at Bayern, by the way: Davies, Leroy Sané, and Lucas Hernández.

Wanner is reportedly still expected to play more for the U19 side and FC Bayern II this year than for the senior team. The training at left-back is therefore seen as also a developmental one — to improve both his fitness levels and his general understanding of the game.

Josip Stanišić is the other alternative at the spot, with Noussair Mazraoui’s arrival crowding him out at right-back.

Analysis

Stanišić is a promising player who needs playing time, but presents a very different look to Davies at left-back. Wanner would be the player to duplicate both Davies’ attacking initiative and ability to provide width from the left. Is he far enough along to make matchday squads regularly, though, and would that eat into his youth development if he doesn’t get game time?

For regular rotation, there’s certainly a glut of center-backs if Hernández shifts wide. Hernández is a regular choice top XI — but perhaps he’ll rotate ordinarily with Dayot Upamecano to allow him spells on the left. Maybe that’s the way to give Tanguy Nianzou another step up in playing time.

It wouldn’t be hard to imagine Wanner earning the occasional start in the Davies role — perhaps in a DFB-Pokal game, for example. However, when it’s Stanišić getting the nod, tactics will need shuffling and someone else will have to provide width on the left.

Bayern leapt at the chance to earn decent return for a well-liked squad backup in Omar Richards this transfer window, but it’s curious they did so without a direct replacement. Time will tell if the Wanner alternative will prove fruitful — for either the player’s development or the team’s.

“I’m someone who is extremely excited when you can play more and have to train less.”

Joshua Kimmich gave a wide-ranging interview to Tz prior to Friday’s Bundesliga opener in which he talked about the recent tactical focus under head coach Julian Nagelsmann, as well as Bayern Munich’s recent defensive performances.

Kimmich spoke off the heels of an exciting summer transfer window for the Bavarians, and after they flexed their new look in a dominant 5-3 DFL-Supercup thrashing of RB Leipzig that nonetheless ended far too close on the scoreboard for comfort.

“Too many goals conceded,” he said. “We have to continue to improve there. The set pieces in particular were one of our great strengths last season — both offensively and defensively. In general, it always hurts to concede a goal from a set piece because it’s a fairly easy goal to defend.”

Leipzig had scored their first from a corner and then added a second from the penalty spot. Last season’s defensive frailties are still fresh in the players’ minds, and nobody wants to see this kind of propensity for giving up untimely goals out of nowhere.

“It’s become more tactical since last week,” Kimmich said of the team’s recent training. “The focus is on us conceding fewer goals, on us improving in every respect as far as defending is concerned.”

As for how the head trainer intends to achieve that? By keeping everyone on their toes.

“Julian thinks about a lot of things, including how he can convey content through play,” Kimmich said. “Depending on what he wants to see, he comes up with something - even with rules in the game forms. This makes the training very versatile and always different. Even at the final training session, you often do something different...

“For us players, it sometimes goes very fast with him. You journalists know that Julian can explain a lot of content in a short time.”

A deluge of information is a double-edged sword. It’s important to have the right tactical tweaks — down to precise, minute, individual adjustments for every conceivable scenario — but not so much that players are overloaded with instruction, or too busy processing to react on the field.

Julian Nagelsmann will get his wish fulfilled with the new video wall set to be permanently installed on the training ground.

To that end, there’s the new video board — trialed at the end of last season but only recently to find a permanent installation at the practice field. Count Kimmich as one of the early skeptics.

“At first I thought, ‘Woah, that’s a gimmick.’ Last week in particular, however, we worked a lot with it,” he said. But with his fast-talking head-coach — “That’s why it’s good that you can see it on the screen on the pitch, correct it and put it into practice. For example, when it comes to how we want to start or how we want to play out the back. Then he shows it on the screen and we try to do it that way. Then it solidifies in the mind.

“The thing is probably very expensive. But I think it can help us a lot.”

Giant, expensive video board: Bayern’s most crucial and underrated transfer of the summer?

Of course, as important as all this practice is, Kimmich is ready to get back to the game — the game that he lives and gives his all for. “I’m someone who is extremely excited when you can play more and have to train less,” he said — while acknowledging the coaches probably feel just the opposite.

For players like Kimmich, though, and for us fans — the season is now upon us. And there’s going to be plenty of action to whet that competitive appetite.

“Kloppo“ hints that Mané can reach Zlatan levels, but not of arrogance.

Sadio Mané was unveiled as a Bayern Munich player last month, arriving on a €32 million deal until 2025. The deal was finalized quicker than usual, so what happened behind the scenes? Well, Jürgen Klopp has you covered. Mané’s former boss from Liverpool FC has revealed the process of the Senegalese attacker’s move to Bayern. Klopp said that Mané was looking for a new challenge and that Bayern were more than ready for negotiations, which was why the transfer was done with minimal fuss.

“Sadio and his agent told me that he (Mané) was looking for a new challenge,” Klopp told Goal. “If that happens early enough, like this case, and if that happens in the right way and the player and the agent are working, and the new club where they want to go is ready for negotiations, then it should be like it was now.”

The former Man City player has struggled to justify his price tag.

Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sané remains an enigmatic figure on the team.

When he’s on, he can be an absolute world-beater like in the Hinrunde of the 2021/22 season. If he isn’t on, however, we have a player that causes headaches for Bayern and their fans.

In the DFL-Supercup against RB Leipzig a few days ago, Sané had a bad first impression after being subbed on for Serge Gnabry. Sané picked up a yellow card for arguing with the referee but kept a cool head later on as he scored Bayern’s fifth goal in the 98th minute. effectively killing off the game and sealing the trophy. Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann praised Sané in his post-match press conference, while sporting director Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidžić shared the same sentiment.

“His game looks good when he comes onto the pitch so emotionally, almost cheekily and decisively,” said Brazzo. “We know that he has qualities like no other. When he acts like that, I like it a lot.”

Sané is talented, there’s no denying that, but his fluctuating consistency makes him incredibly frustrating to watch. According to Sport1, Sané’s form has been a topic of internal discussion. The coaching staff have also done all they could to get the best out of the Essen-born winger, but to no avail. They have also said that no other player has any major issues that need fixing.

Looks like we’re not the only ones who disapprove of Sané’s antics.

The bosses all expect a new and improved Sané, who they believe should build on his performance in the first half of last season. Sané is lucky that he isn’t on the transfer list because these performances can warrant getting the boot. He has his work cut out for him because he faces stiff competition in the attack. Liverpool signing Sadio Mané and the newly extended Serge Gnabry are planned as a dual-striker pairing up top, while the in-form Jamal Musiala and Kingsley Coman are ahead of Sané in the pecking order. Thomas Müller, whom Sané previously shared the CAM spots, will now be the sole proprietor of the 10 and can be pushed wide if needs be. All of this doesn’t even include Mathys Tel who came in from Stade Rennais.

This is Sané’s make or break season. Frankfurt looms as the 2022/23 Bundesliga season beckons, and if he doesn’t do something about it, then that might spell the end of his time at Bayern.

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann will have nearly his full squad available for selection on Friday as Bayern complete their preparations for Eintracht Frankfurt.

Bayern Munich are wrapping up preparations for Friday’s Bundesliga opener against Eintracht Frankfurt, and have some welcome news: new forward Mathys Tel will be eligible to play, as confirmed by Christian Falk. Meanwhile, the team reported that Manuel Neuer missed training Wednesday with a case of the stomach bug — but it doesn’t sound too serious.

Tel’s eligibility is welcome, if expected news; some frustrating UEFA red tape and scheduling issues delayed his availability for last Saturday’s win over RB Leipzig. The almost-friendly nature of the DFL-Supercup would have been a nice, low-stakes but still competitive environment for the seventeen-year-old to get his feet wet with the first team.

As it happened, head coach Julian Nagelsmann made an effort to help with the youngster’s acclimation by bringing him along anyway, per Sport1’s Kerry Hau (as captured by @iMiaSanMia):

Despite his ineligibility for the game, Nagelsmann decided to take Mathys Tel to Leipzig. The 17-yo even warmed up with the team and lifted the trophy afterwards. The club wants Tel to get used to the procedures quickly in order to be ready as soon as he's eligible [@kerry_hau] pic.twitter.com/V65M1Qoe5V
— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) July 31, 2022

And so if Tel is in line for a substitute appearance this week, at least it won’t be in his first run out at a game. Whether he’ll get that chance — in place perhaps of Sadio Mané or Serge Gnabry late — or whether we’ll still be on Tel watch going forward will be one of the game’s intriguing storylines. Fans will be curious to catch that first glimpse of a major new investment in this transfer window.

Meanwhile we’re approaching a near-full bill of health for the Bayern squad as we head into the season. Barring something hitting the fan, Neuer will be up and running again, too — expect to see him between the sticks and logging another start as captain.

Sadio Mané, of course, is the former Liverpool star who moved to Bayern Munich this transfer window, one of the most dangerous forwards in Europe. While Fischer was surely playing coy, the Frankfurt man is expecting his boys to give their all and mount a strong challenge to the Rekordmeister on Friday.
