Flick was impressed with the attacking pair’s performance against England.

National team manager Hansi Flick was able to draw a ‘lot of positives’ from Germany’s entertaining UEFA nations league clash with England. One aspect of Die Nationalmannschaft’s attack that drew the attention of the former Bayern Munich coach was Timo Werner’s fruitful strike partnership with Kai Havertz.

Flick recently praised the attacking duo’s combined efforts in helping their team score three past Gareth Soutgate’s men. The 56-year old credited Werner, who was brought in at half-time, for opening up space and bringing the best out of Havertz and Bayern youngster Jamal Musiala, both of whom struggled in the opening half.

“With Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala, we brought in two new players on the offensive side, and we had already planned in advance for them to play in England,” explained Flick (as captured by SZ). “Jamal on ten, Kai up front as a nine. We changed that in the second half, which was good for both Kai and Jamal.”

During their first season together at Chelsea FC, Werner and Havertz were able to forge chemistry as they went on to win the UEFA Champions League while leading the Blues’ attack. When asked if Germany could also benefit from the pair’s shared history, Flick hinted at the possibility of including both of them in the FIFA World Cup starting-XI.

“They both played well together. It’s also perhaps one more option,” the Bundestrainer said. “Especially Kai did well to score the two goals. The 2:0 was just great. Timo passed the ball nicely to Kai. He then has the space and dinks the ball sensationally. They both showed that they are important players for us.”

Unfortunately, Flick didn’t specify whether he sees Havertz as an attacking-midfielder, a position currently occupied by Bayern vice-captain Thomas Müller, or a right-winger. Interestingly, Werner, Havertz and Müller haven’t started together since the 1-1 draw with Netherlands in March. It also remains to be seen if Werner will retain his place as Germany’s striker or act as a super substitute that can be brought on against tired opponents. As things stand, Flick’s default attacking-quartet for Qatar will likely consist of Havertz, Müller, Musiala and Leroy Sané.

The former Chelsea man is enjoying life in the Spanish capital

Antonio Rüdiger has been a Real Madrid player for about three months, but so much has happened since his departure from London-based club Chelsea FC. The VfB Stuttgart graduate recently sat down with Sport1 in what was a chill and reportedly fun interview session with the 29-year-old. A rather extensive one at that too.

Sport1 began by asking Rüdiger how he has so much time on his hands; he was on the back of a Madrid derby win over Atletico Madrid and has just been called up by Germany coach Hansi Flick. The spirit of Thomas Müller was present as Rüdiger joked that his family wasn’t there, which was why he was able to do the interview.

“It’s easy, boys. My family isn’t here right now anyway, I’ll take a lot of time for you today!” Rüdiger said.

After congratulating Rüdiger on the win over Atleti, Sport1 had a bone to pick with the German international. Apparently spelling lessons aren’t a thing in Madrid as Rüdiger’s name has been misspelled by the folks at the Santiago Bernabeu, which he didn’t mind but he corrected it anyway.

“No, it wasn’t that bad”, he laughed. “My little cousin drew my attention to it. He sent me a photo of my locker and asked: ‘Toni, what’s going on there?’ I forwarded this directly to our team manager — with the note that you’re welcome to omit the ‘U’. He then apologized to me 1,000 times. But like I said, that wasn’t a problem for me. I had to laugh about it myself.”

Who was justly rewarded and who was hard done by? Let us know.

Germany's 3-3 draw with England has brought mixed feelings on the readiness of Hansi Flick's side for the World Cup, and it's reflected in the media ratings — which feature considerable variability for both sides, while handing a noncommital middle-of-the-road ‘3’ — to be sure, the number and theme of the day — to each manager.

Here’s how it looked, according to Bild:

England ratings

On the England side, Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham were certainly standouts, while Luke Shaw (Manchester United) got in on the scoring and delivered some outstanding service to the front line. It’s to Germany’s credit that Manchester City forwards Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden were so restrained. They were not bad so much as Germany were good.

Meanwhile, the key Southgate subs — Arsenal FC’s Bukayo Saka and Chelsea FC’s Mason Mount — were game-changers both. Saka failed to score in the 90th minute, but could hardly have done better after being cleverly closed down — just bout — by Germany’s İlkay Gündoğan.

Manchester United center-back Harry Maguire had a horror show. He was toyed with by Jamal Musiala, which is no shame on its own, but even the penalty he gave away resulted after he passed the ball straight to the German attacker in build-up.

Germany ratings

Coach Hansi Flick set up his team well to take the likes of Sterling and Foden out of the game — with some help from FC Barcelona keeper Marc-André ter Stegen, of course. But a lack of reaction to Southgate subs that allowed not only a midfield turnaround but three goals within ten minutes is a serious warning sign.

In attack, Gladbach’s Jonas Hofmann and Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sané did not have similar days. Sané struggled to get into truly influential positions in the first half, but the balance in offense did not appear to be quite right, and he wasn’t the reason why. Better composure from Timo Werner on two occasions might have resulted in two goals for him — it’s not so different from Kai Havertz, who headlined the scoring but wasn’t a dominant force himself.

Hofmann had the worst day in attack and looked off the pace, at least for what he was asked to do. His half-time hooking was appropriate, but perhaps even still that was down to Flick’s line-up — had Timo Werner been creating space from the opposite flank, perhaps Hofmann would have been the threat we saw in June.

In defense, West Ham’s Thilo Kehrer was solid if unremarkable, but looked very much like a player with a role to play in the Qatar. He was in the area code on Luke Shaw’s goal, but it was already 3-on-3 in the center as the cross came in, not including Shaw.

Schlotterbeck’s harsh rating is more deserved. He had good moments but also incredibly shaky ones, especially on the second goal and his conceded penalty. He does not look like a World Cup starter.

Finally, there’s Werner — who for all the truly agonizing misses that have come to define him, still changed the game after coming on at the half. He was the key to breaking this game open for Germany, and considering he also had an assist, seems the most hard done by in these ratings. It’s hard to imagine a first-choice attacking lineup without him right now against teams like England, but the quality and variety of options — as opposed to a clear plan and clear focal points — might just be this team’s Achilles heel.

England is likely going to kick itself for years for letting Jamal Musiala slip away.

England coach Gareth Southgate absolutely hated losing Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala to Germany when it came time for the youngster to pick an international side.

Of course, Musiala was an impact player for Germany in the squad’s 3-3 draw with England in the UEFA Nations League on Monday. The 19-year-old played a role in Germany’s first two goals and also probably helped direct a little more ire at Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, who just happened to be victimized twice by Musiala.

“Musiala is an exceptional player. We had him play with Jude (Bellingham) in our U-16s. You know how much we liked him, you know how hard we tried to keep him,” Southgate told Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “However, he was training at Bayern Munich with eight German internationals who had the opportunity to influence him. That’s a shame. He is a very special talent.”

Interestingly, Musiala might not have even drawn consideration from England so quickly if not for Germany’s proactive play to get him called to the senior team. More than anything, Chelsea FC’s failure to involve Musiala in the club’s first team was probably the catalyst that set all of this in motion.

Will the veteran be selected to go to Qatar for the World Cup?

Former Bayern Munich defender Mats Hummels has rejuvenated his career at Borussia Dortmund by changing his diet and getting healthy after a few seasons riddled with various ailments.

Hummels’ recent form has him firmly on the radar of Germany manager Hansi Flick for a World Cup roster spot per Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia):

Hansi Flick has opened the door for Mats Hummels to return to the national team for the World Cup following his strong performances with BVB, despite not being called up recently. Hummels would be happy to be included in the 26-man World Cup squad even as a substitute.

Hummels acknowledged that the wheels could be in motion for a return to the German national team.

“We are in regular contact (with Hansi Flick) and discussing how we see the situation,” said Hummels.

The veteran center-back’s leadership could prove invaluable, but his experience and recent form also make him an attractive option for Flick. Borussia Dortmund’s Niklas Süle and Real Madrid’s Antonio Rüdiger are lockdown starters for Flick with BVB’s Nico Schlotterbeck as the only other center-back that looks to be guaranteed a spot. SC Freiburg’s Matthias Ginter and West Ham United’s Thilo Kehrer are versatile enough to play both outside-back and center-back, which could make them attractive options to Flick as well.

Hummels has helped get himself back into consideration for a roster spot due a renewed commitment to his fitness and nutrition per Sport1:

What many didn’t know until now: For two years now, the now 33-year-old defender has been working with nutrition expert Nahni Franke, who also looks after other top athletes such as sprint star Gina Lückenkemper (who won EM gold over 100m).

Hummels made the change after some self-examination.

“Some time ago I noticed that I could still get a lot out of nutrition, which is why I started working with Nahni,” Hummels said.

The big key for Hummels is avoiding sweets per Franke.

“Mats had a real sweet tooth,” said Franke. “It was difficult for him to avoid chocolate or ice cream. So we came up with the idea of developing our ‘foodballs.’ You feel like you’re snacking on something sweet and sinning, but at the end of the day there’s only good stuff in there that helps the body and serves as a tasty fuel.”

Hummels just loves the taste of those nutritious balls in his mouth.

“Since I’ve known Nahnis ‘foodballs’, I can do without sweets much better,” said Hummels, who is also eating more plant-based foods. “I actually eat a lot less fish and meat. Not without it, but a lot less. I leave out wheat. I also eat a lot of vegan dishes.”

Germany vs. England was a roller coaster ride.

Die Folgen: Germany’s 3-3 draw with England (Bavarian Football Works)

For a half, former Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick probably wanted to hit his team with defibrillator paddles. Maybe he went to the locker room and did just that...I don’t know, but what ever happened Germany was much better and it led to an insane 3-3 draw at Wembley Stadium.

Here are some quick hitters on the match:

Flick went with some changes to lineup, but not wholesale movement. Nico Schlotterbeck stepped in for Antonio Rüdiger, Thilo Kehrer replaced Serge Gnabry, Kai Havertz was swapped in for Timo Werner, and Jamal Musiala took the place of Thomas Müller. Of course, there was some shifting of positions to make all of that work:

Jonas Hofmann, who appears to be a #FlickFavorite, slid up from right-back to right-wing, with Kehrer occupying the right-back role.

Both Germany and England looked “off” in the first half. There was a ton of talent on the pitch, but neither team played in an especially sharp fashion. The games very choppy early.

I think the best way to describe how each team played was “unsure.”

Leroy Sané’s new hairstyle, mustache combination makes him look like Marcel Sabitzer.

In the 25th minute, the momentum swung over to England’s side. Luke Shaw sent a beautiful ball into Raheem Sterling who got just behind the Germany backline, but Marc-André ter Stegen made a brilliant save. Seconds later, Thilo Kehrer had to make a strong play to stop a good chance for Harry Kane.

It was 0-0 at halftime and neither team was really playing like they were motivated or inspired to be there. Aside of Ter Stegen, Sterling was the best player on the pitch in the first half and that was really by process of elimination. Sterling’s decision-making in a couple instances was not great, but he was a consistent threat.

Germany looked much better in the second half.

Jamal Musiala took advantage of a really poorly conceived pass attempt from Harry Maguire before the English defender doubled down and fouled Musiala in the box for a penalty. İlkay Gündoğan buried in the 52nd second minute for a 1-0 Germany lead.

It was not Musiala’s cleanest game, but he always finds a way to be impactful.

Maguire is going to have a tough day in the English papers on Tuesday.

Like it or not Germany fans, Werner coming on did help open up the offense. Sure, he passed when he should have shot — and then missed a shot when he should have passed — but he ended up making good later on. In the 67th minute, Musiala took advantage of another Maguire miscue. The ball eventually found Werner out-wide, The RB Leipzig man bided his time, cut inside, drew in the defense, and found Havertz, who hit an absolute worldie.

I did like the threat that Werner brought, but yes, he needs to do a hell of a lot better with those first two opportunities.

From that point, Germany unraveled. Luke Shaw (72’) and Mason Mount (75’) each scored to knot the game at 2-2, things got way more physical, and the crowd was revved the hell up.

A sloppy challenge from Schlotterbeck gave England a penalty and Harry Kane buried for 3-2 lead in the 83rd minute. Schlotterbeck has a lot of talent, but this is the second time he’s done this against England.

I thought Schlotterbeck and Niklas Süle were good for the most part. I think Süle helped himself a lot during this international break after getting off to a so-so start with Borussia Dortmund.

Right-back is going to be a fascinating position for Hansi Flick to pick a starter.

What an epic collapse by Germany...or so it seemed.

Gnabry would make his presence felt as he let loose with a long distance shot that England goalkeeper Nick Pope couldn’t handle. Havertz was opportunistic and beat Shaw to the spot to hit home the game-tying goal. That was about Gnabry’s only real contribution, but he made it count.

Havertz, who has been one of Germany’s most maligned players along with Werner, really needed a game like that.

That was an exhausting run of goals from both teams...it was like two heavyweight boxers, who sandbagged it for half a match before unloaded haymakers at each other during the championship rounds.

Overall, it was one terrible half and one extremely fun half. For this set of games, I just hope this gave Flick enough to see what he has, what he needs, and what his boys have to work on. Obviously, finishing and efficiency could be a lot better.

Upon seeing reports from Italy (!?) that Bayern Munich had interest in Borussia Dortmund youngster Youssoufa Moukoko, Sport1 journalists Kerry Hau and Patrick Berger went to work to show that the Bavarians would not be making a pitch for the 17-year-old:

Dortmund’s derby hero Youssoufa Moukoko’s contract expires in the summer of 2023. Talks about an extension are currently on hold - and now FC Bayern is said to have interfered in the poker for one of the greatest German storm talents! At least that’s what the Italian portal Calciomercato claims.

According to SPORT1 information, Moukoko is currently not an issue for Bayern. Because they recently brought a 17-year-old top talent for the storm with Mathys Tel and next year, should there be a need and the opportunity should arise, they would only sign a seasoned player of top European level for the nine position.

As for what might happen with Moukoko, it appears he’ll either re-up with Borussia Dortmund or move on permanently — a loan is not an option:

According to SPORT1 information , a loan is no longer an issue for Moukoko . The player either wants to stay in Dortmund or be sold. In the summer, as a free transfer player (market value: 15 million euros), he could get a hefty hand money.

Germany failed to impress against Hungary in what can be summed up as a disappointing showing overall, particularly from the attack. If Hansi Flick’s side is to have any shot at going deep in the competition, they simply cannot look so toothless up front. Also, is Germany’s poor form coinciding with Bayern Munich’s poor showings of late mere happenstance, or are the two related?

Coming to the situation at Bayern, does Julian Nagelsmann show a preference for more senior players? Is the 4-2-2-2 getting exposed, or does the drop-in form have nothing to do with Nagelsmann’s preferred setup?

Loads of questions out there, sure, and that is precisely what Schnitzel, Samrin, and Tom are here to dissect in this podcast. The following is a list of the major talking points:

Instead, Süle felt inspired by the overall quality of the group. The big center-back did, however, call for his German teammates to all work on their respective games over the next six weeks.

“We know where we stand because we have a really awesome team.
Germany is looking to improve itself in many ways ahead of the World Cup.

After Germany’s roller coaster of a 3-3 draw with England on Monday, Bayern Munich star Thomas Müller took a few moments to assess the match and what his side can improve upon with its mentality.

“Whoever turned the TV off after 65 minutes probably went to bed feeling pretty excited about the World Cup. But just as I said, the feelings we have today won’t be decisive in how we approach our first World Cup game and with that in mind, I don’ care how we all feel today,” said Müller after the match (as captured by DW Sports). “Maybe Real Madrid is an example to us. I’ve played for a lot of coaches, including Carlo Ancelotti, who has won the most trophies. After things don’t go well, it’s all about getting back up and keeping your confidence. We’d do well to follow that.”

Real Madrid, of course, was largely written off last season before ultimately winning the Champions League.

One thing that Müller feels could help Germany is having so many Bayern Munich players working together on a daily basis over the next few weeks.

“Since we have a lot of Bayern players in the national team, it would be an advantage if we had a natural understanding, combinations, automatisms that you can fall back on and that also work at the club. It would be cool if we could work that out,” Müller told Sky (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
