Bayern Munich is one victory away from clinching another Bundesliga title.

Die Folgen: Bayern’s 3-0 win over Arminia (Bavarian Football Works)

Bayern Munich visited Arminia Bielefeld looking to rebound and get three points — and that is exactly what the Rekordmeister did. Using an overwhelming attack, Bayern Munich rarely gave the home side a chance to breath. Here are some quick hitters on the match:

The selection of Marcel Sabitzer over Leroy Sane was interesting. Sane has not been great of late, so why not?

Bayern Munich opened in a back three formation with Dayot Upamecano, Tanguy Nianzou, and Benjamin Pavard operating as center-backs, but it the player pretty much went into full attacking mode. On offense, sometimes it just looked like a 3-7 to be honest.

Serge Gnabry and Alphonso Davies operated as wing-backs and both were very good in the attack.

Manuel Neuer was not happy with the defense early on. Patrick Wimmer was giving Dayot Upamecano fits. Later, Wimmer frustrated Benjamin Pavard. Of anyone, Josip Stanisic, who came on a substitute for Nianzou, handled Wimmer the best. The defensive corps, however, was solid on the day, despite a few lapses.

How did Robert Lewandowski’s 8th minute header not go in? That was a nice cross from Gnabry. Bayern Munich was the recipient of an own goal just minutes later for a 1-0 lead.

Bayern Munich knew it had an advantage and played like it. They were like sharks with chum in the water. Stefan Ortega was under consistent duress. There was just a consistent see of red jerseys in the penalty area.

Tanguy Nianzou had a bad stretch in the first half. The youngster got a bit lucky that Masaya Okugawa was inches offside as he outworked Nianzou. Moments later, the 19-year-old picked up sloppy and needless yellow card that could have garnered for consideration for a red card given the carelessness of the play. We can keep talking about Nianzou’s immense potential, but he has a serious pattern of irresponsible decisions on the pitch. He needs a larger portfolio of playing time to show whether his propensity for sloppy play is just a phase or if it is just who he is. Are you comfortable with Nianzou figuring that out during key games in Bavaria or does a loan spell sound better? Give me the loan.

Nianzou was replaced by Stanisic after halftime as Nagelsmann needed to teach him a lesson.

Neuer made an absolutely fantastic save in the 6th minute of added time in the first half.

Moments later Kimmich sent a beautiful ball over the top to Gnabry, who scored a magnificent goal.

Man, if Gnabry wanted to be a great wing-back, he really could do it. He was really, really good on the day with creating offense for himself and others. This was one of his best efforts of the season.

I’ve went on record as saying I probably would look to sell Gnabry just given the positional glut and depth on the squad — and no, he wasn’t perfect against Arminia Bielefeld (in a few instances he held the ball too long, dribble into defenders, didn’t pull the trigger quick enough for a shot) — but he was good overall and it was a very positive performance for the Germany international.

Instead of Leroy Sane and Jamal Musiala coming on for Thomas Müller and Marcel Sabitzer, I think I’d have rather seen Sabitzer stay on and Kimmich take a seat. Yes, I am back on the “let Kimmich rest” train.

Bayern Munich’s third goal was spurred by another terrific save by Neuer that later led to a great feed from Lewandowski to Musiala, who had a deft, little finish in tight quarters.

It was great to see Gabriel Vidovic make his debut, even if it was for a few minutes.

Overall, Bayern Munich was unrelenting with its attack, but a bit unlucky in the final third. The Bavarians were a threat for the entirety of the game, but just could not pile on as many goals as they would have liked. Regardless, it was a solid showing for Bayern Munich and the squad got the three points it needed.

According to the information of BILD, as translated and relayed by BVB Newsblog, Erling Haaland to Manchester City should ‘go through in a timely manner’ - suggesting that the completion of a deal is now only just a matter of time away.

Yes, he is 33 years of age but as a short term investment Lewandowski could be the perfect stepping stone. I would give him a two-year contract and ask him not only to bring goals to Newcastle but help develop the great young talent which will be coming through at the club.

I could see Lewandowski doing a similar sort of job to what Kevin Keegan did as a player at Newcastle all those years ago. Keegan had the background to be United’s Pied Piper.

Bayern Munich rode their luck and had a few decisions go their way but, nonetheless, stepped closer to the title.

The Bayern Munich backline remains rather shaky

Tanguy Nianzou started today and could have been sent off for a poor challenge in the first half. Masaya Okugawa was offside by a hair, having beaten the backline convincingly from a long ball. Patrick Wimmer had Dayot Upamecano and Nianzou’s number pretty much all first half. Julian Nagelsmann in fact brought in Josip Stanisic to steady the ship in the second half. All in all — back two, three or four — that backline needs work. A long ball over the top should not beat a world class team repeatedly.

Questions for/about Julian Nagelsmann because....why not?

Going back to the first leg against Villarreal, Nagelsmann chose to start Alphonso Davies that day. However, he has been giving Nianzou regular outings in the Bundesliga. Giving Omar Richards more regular outings and starting him against Villarreal was an option which Nagelsmann did not use, instead choosing to go with a player returning from a long layoff in Alphonso Davies. Might things have been different if Nagelsmann had chosen to go with a player who had more match practice?

Furthermore, the back-line’s indecisiveness continues and maybe, starting with Josip Stanisic today, who had a very promising beginning to the season, might have been the better option. Nagelsmann needs a set team and a set formation; we might have to wait till next season to find out.

Praise for Alphonso Davies and Jamal Musiala

Jamal Musiala continues to make a case to be in the starting XI; he is too talented to not be in the first XI but also too young to regularly command a place in the team. He is excellent whenever he plays and he is one of the bright spots in a season which is coming to a tame ending for Bayern.

Davies came back from injury rusty as is to be expected but is working his way back to his best form. The Canadian continues to excel whether that be in a back three or four and his absence due to injury showed us his true importance to Bayern. Also, as a sidenote, I just want to point out Joshua Kimmich’s range of passing — for a player with such vision, he has really had a rather underwhelming season.

Finally, we got treated to a good match.

Bayern Munich delivered a dominant performance against Arminia Bielefeld, shaking off their Champions League defeat to Villarreal. Here’s who stood out.

Jersey Swap: Patrick Wimmer

Arminia didn’t really have a game to remember, but Wimmer really stood out from a bad bunch. He was at the starting point of almost every Bielefeld attack, and he might have had an assist to his name had it not been for some stellar defending from Bayern. It was a good showing from the midfielder, especially considering he was shorn of his main striker Fabian Klos due to a head injury. Speaking of which, how many more head injuries can Bielefeld take? They already had two before this game, and they suffered one more. This does not bode well for the relegation threatened side.

Der Kaiser: Dayot Upamecano

Upamecano was Bayern’s best defender by a mile. His partner Tanguy Nianzou was rash, unsure of himself, and careless. He was lucky to escape with only a booking. Upamecano was in charge of sweeping up all his mistakes, which he did brilliantly. Not only that, he was also responsible for making sure that Bayern’s high line didn’t break in the second half. His headers and tackles were on point, and he was a strong, steady presence in the heart of the defense. I don’t think he made any mistakes today. Yes, it was against lowly Bielefeld, but it’s good to see Upamecano putting in good performances week in week out nowadays. If he keeps this up, he’ll become a great asset to the team, especially in the light of Niklas Süle’s departure in the summer.

Der Fußballgott: Joshua Kimmich

Kimmich has had a few games to forget in recent weeks, but he turned his doubters inside out with today’s performance. He was mainly in charge of delivering long lofted balls behind Bielefeld’s defense line, and he played that role to near perfection. It was his long balls which resulted in Bielefeld’s own goal and Serge Gnabry’s strike on the stroke of halftime. Not only that, but he also cleverly played in Robert Lewandowski for Jamal Musiala’s goal in the second half. Kimmich was Bayern’s playmaker of the day, and my goodness, was he good at it. Hopefully he can build on this performance and work his way back up to his lofty position as the world’s best central midfielder.

Der Bomber: Robert Lewandowski

To be completely honest, none of Bayern’s attackers were stellar despite the big win. Gnabry got on the scoresheet but was wasteful, Thomas Müller looked tired (good thing he was subbed off early), and Marcel Sabitzer wasn’t in the right place. Lewandowski wasn’t too impressive either, but he worked very hard on and off the ball all game. Yes, there are reports coming out that he isn’t too happy with Julian Nagelsmann’s attacking tactics, but even so, I applaud the professionalism and grit that he showed today. He also got an assist with a well timed pass in the second half for Musiala to slot in, before being subbed off for Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. Fingers crossed he can add some goals in the coming games as well.

Meister of the Match: Alphonso Davies

The Roadrunner is back! Davies capped his second start since his injury with an absolutely brilliant performance. He constantly terrorized Bielefeld’s defense with his galloping runs, and also didn’t do a half bad job in his own defensive area either. He latched onto Kimmich’s long ball to create Bielefeld’s own goal, and he was just busy and diligent throughout the whole 90 minutes. Davies had a stellar season up until his bout with myocarditis, and it’s good to see that he’s picking up from where he left off. The only gripe I have with his performance today was his skyward pass? shot? in the final seconds of the game, but hey, no one’s perfect. All in all, Davies was Bayern’s best player today, and it’s so good to see him back doing what he does best.

One more win officially clinches Bayern’s tenth straight Bundesliga title.

After Borussia Dortmund had once again put on the pressure with their comprehensive 6-1 win over VfL Wolfsburg, Bayern Munich took care of their own business, beating Arminia Bielefeld 3-0 at the Bielefelder Alm. After an own goal from Bielefeld’s Jacob Laursen in the 10th minute, Bayern carried on with unanswered goals from Serge Gnabry just before the stroke of half time and a Jamal Musiala goal in the 84th minute to seal the three points. Despite Bielefeld posing their fair share of threats, particularly through the counter attack and Patrick Wimmer, Manuel Neuer recorded yet another clean sheet en route to the vital three points for Julian Nagelsmann’s side.

The win re-restored Bayern’s nine point lead over Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga table and a win in next weekend’s installment of der Klassiker next weekend could see Bayern officially clinch their tenth consecutive Meisterschale. While this season’s expectations have already been underwhelming given the fact that Bayern has already been knocked out of both the DFB-Pokal and Champions League, there’s added onus to clinch the Bundesliga title against their bitter rivals at home.

Joshua Kimmich spoke of the added onus to go on next week and clinch the title next weekend after a solid performance in Bielefeld. He setup Bayern’s first goal, assisted Gnabry for their second, and also setup Musiala’s goal with his lovely, lofted diagonal ball to Robert Lewandowski. “We really want to win the league now. Next week we can secure it against BVB, it’s a special game,” he said after the match (DAZN via @iMiaSanMia on Twitter).

Obviously, this season for Bayern will still be stained by the shock early exit in the DFB-Pokal at the hands of Borussia Monchengladbach back in October. Likewise, Bayern were the odds-on favorites to progress past Villarreal in the Champions League quarter-finals, but lost 2-1 on aggregate over two legs. Both of those campaign exits were bitter pills to swallow, but should, by no means, define the effort that was put forth by the team. For Kimmich, he knows that the squad is fully focused on the task at hand next weekend, but admitted there will eventually be some time for reflection on the season as a whole. “Of course, we have to work through the season afterwards. We were eliminated early in the Pokal and Champions League. We were planning for more,” he said.

Serge Gnabry had a goal and played a key role during his team’s win.

Bayern Munich star Serge Gnabry was one of the team’s top performers during his squad’s 3-0 victory over Arminia Bielefeld.

Gnabry contributed a goal and was a menace offensively as Bayern Munich’s attack was nothing short of relentless. Gnabry said the win only lessened the disappointment from losing against Villarreal earlier in the week.

“Today’s game reduced the frustration a bit, because we really wanted to go through in the Champions League,” said Gnabry (as captured by @iMiaSanMia)

As for his goal Gnabry credited the terrific pass from Joshua Kimmich.

“A big credit goes to Joshua, we’ve known each other for a long time. I know what to do when Jo dribbles inside towards their backline,” Gnabry said.

Of course, the topic of Gnabry’s current contract negotiations came up, but the goal scorer was reluctant to dive into that subject.

“There’s nothing new yet — we’ll leave it at that,” Gnabry said.

The youngster sloppy play continued.

Off the field, mostly everyone around Bayern Munich raves about the enormous potential of 19-year-old Tanguy Nianzou.

On the field, however, the youngster appears to have a substantial learning curve. Positioning has been an issue at times for the defender, but his propensity for sloppy and dangerous challenges has emerged as a pattern in his game.

In Bayern Munich’s 3-0 victory over Arminia Bielefeld, Nianzou picked up his fifth yellow card in just 20 appearances this season, following a 2020/21 campaign where he had one yellow card and one red card in just six appearances.

After Nianzou’s irresponsible challenge on Fabian Kunze knocked Kunze from the game, Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann had seen enough and bench the youngster after halftime.

Nianzou’s challenge easily could have been a red card.

“That was a lesson for him, because going for the opponent’s head like that is dangerous. He has to learn that at this age,” Nagelsmann told DAZN (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “For me that was a red card!”

Nianzou, who has recently received several votes of confidence from his coach and the Bayern Munich brass over the past few weeks, could be grinding away at the patience of his superiors.

Per some reports, Nianzou was genuinely concerned for Kunze’s well-being after the foul occurred, but it was too little, too late by that point.

That was a fairly dominant effort from Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich played its first game since being eliminated from the Champions League by Villarreal and the Bavarians swarmed an overmatched Arminia Bielefeld side by using a relentless and overwhelming offensive attack to capture a 3-0 victory.

Using a back three, Julian Nagelsmann’s side went all-out on offense and just kept constant pressure on Arminia Bielefeld. Here is what we have on tap for this episode:

This part of the season really sucks. The Bundesliga is still left to win, but for Bayern Munich fans it often feels like the entire thing wraps up when the team gets knocked out of the Champions League.
