Bayern’s defense was abysmal in Bochum and Kahn knows how paramount it is to stay more defensively disciplined moving forward.

VfL Bochum shocked the Bundesliga on Saturday with their 4-2 win over Bayern Munich, handing the Rekordmeister their third league defeat of the season. For the third time in as many matches, Julian Nagelsmann made the decision to field obert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller, Leroy Sane, Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman togethrer in the starting eleven in what was an attack-heavy lineup.

Lucas Hernandez, Dayot Upamecano, Niklas Sule, and Benjamin Pavard comprised the back four and hardly covered themselves in glory with Joshua Kimmich acting as the lone central midfielder before Corentin Tolisso replaced Upamecano to start the second half. By then, the damage had already been done since Bochum had scored four goals in the first half.

Oliver Kahn was in attendance at the Ruhrstadion to befuddlingly witness what unfolded and was disappointed in the mentality Bayern showed, especially in the first half. “The players know that a first half like in Bochum is not acceptable. Because we simply fell far short of our potential,” Bayern’s CEO said after the match (Bild). Joshua Kimmich had expressed his disappoint in his side’s mentality for what he referred to as Bayern’s “worst performance of the season thus far.”

“With such an attitude, such a body language, this has nothing to do with tactics or a game plan. We have to question ourselves and ask ourselves whether that’s the mentality of FC Bayern. It’s happening too often now — I didn’t see anything like this at FC Bayern before,” Kimmich said.

Kahn shared Kimmich’s sentiment in his overall assessment, saying that losses like the one in Bochum always raise questions regarding the team’s mentality, and more specifically, he said that Bayern needs to be more defensively solid. “If you lose big, the topic of mentality is always brought up relatively quickly. Not only in this season, but also in previous seasons, we lack a lot defensively in the backward movement and also in the work against the ball. We concede too many goals,” he stressed.

Bochum was consistently dangerous on their counter attacks, leaving Bayern in vulnerable situations, and Kahn felt that they didn’t do enough to remain defensively disciplined off the ball. He also felt like Bochum was given way too much time on the ball when they were in possession, which is something that cannot be allowed to happen for a club of Bayern’s standards. “That’s something we have to start with: that we have to work with more discipline and passion against the ball again. Otherwise, mistakes will be punished immediately and mercilessly – and even more internationally,” he said.

For now, all of the focus will shift to RB Salzburg for the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. The match comes just four short days after Bayern’s mishap in Bochum, which Kahn feels is a big positive with getting the chance to get back in the win column so quickly. Bayern almost always has responded to a loss with a convincing win, both this season and in recent season’s past. “Sometimes it’s a good thing that you can play again a few days later to forget a result like that. After the 0:5 against Gladbach we immediately showed the right reaction and immediately won the next game relatively clearly. And I assume that will be the case now,” he emphasized.

We discuss the aftermath of Bayern Munich’s shameful loss to VfL Bochum in the Bundesliga.

Thank god that’s over. Bayern Munich just got hammered by VfL Bochum in what was probably one of the worst performances from the season. Naturally, this has the fanbase feeling rather upset, so here’s a postgame show that’s more of a rant than our usual standard fare. Please bear with us.

Here are the talking points from the game:

Overall, a valiant effort from Bochum and a terrible showing from Bayern. | Photo by INA FASSBENDER/AFP via Getty Images

Bayern Munich’s defense was nonexistent in a day when Nagelsmann seemed to have lost the plot. Bochum were deserved winners.

Oh boy. This is going to be a very tough day for the awards. Bayern Munich were put to the sword by VFL Bochum, who looked incredible in their showing against the Rekordmeister. The reverse fixture saw Bayern put seven past their mates from the Ruhr, and revenge has definitely been served on a cold platter, with Bochum getting a statement victory with a 4-2 smattering.

There were some lone stars in the jet-black sky for Bayern, however, giving something to take home from what was otherwise a game to forget.

Jersey Swap: The entire Bochum squad

I initially thought of handing this prestigious award to Upamecano for putting in a fantastic shift as a wide forward for Bochum. Wait, what’s that? He was playing for Bayern? Oh, my bad. I thought he was quite phenomenal in creating space for the Bochum attack.

On a more serious note, Upa wasn’t handed the award because it would’ve been unfair to Bochum, who were fantastic today. Granted, there was a lot of time wasting, diving and some luck involved, but that can be expected considering they are a newly promoted side sitting 11th in the table playing one of the world’s biggest clubs. Special mentions to Gerrit Holtmann and Jürgen Locadia in attack, and Cristian Gamboa and Danilo Soares in defense.

Bayern’s defense was complacent in the first half, and it was punished for it. Kudos to the Bochum squad, who had an xG of 1.3 as opposed to Bayern’s 3.1, and still managed to score 2 more.

Der Bomber: Leroy Sané

Not many good options to pick from, but this one’s not a difficult pick considering Sané was super active in the attacking third, and used his dribbling and pace to devastating effect. He earned the free kick that led to Bayern’s second, and was very active tonight. Of course, some questionable decision making in the final third and a few shoddy shots from distance meant his performance was not up to usual standards, but considering the absence of a midfield and a poor showing from Gnabry, Sané bags the award for his contributions.

Der Fußballgott: Thomas Müller

Nagelsmann’s weird 4-1-4-1 formation meant Kimmich was isolated in midfield, and therefore, Bayern lacked a midfield. Therefore, Müller had to drop back and function as an 8 for almost the entirety of his time on the pitch, and he still managed to excel. He notched the pre-assist for the first goal, pulled the strings in the attack and also put in a good defensive shift. Unfortunately, he wasn’t allowed to thrive in his usual role today, but took one for the team and put in a solid showing.

We need to get his extension over the line as soon as we’re done dealing with the Piranha. Thomas Müller is the backbone of this attack, and dare I say, the entire team.

Der Kaiser: Lucas Hernandez

I’ll say it once again for the people in the back: LUCAS HERNANDEZ BELONGS AT CB. It’s weird that an award is being handed out to a defender in a game that saw Bayern lose after conceding four, but one cannot help but feel sorry for Lucas, who was really solid as a left back, and in the second half, a center back. It is very hard for defenders to get past the man, and Bayern’s defense always looks better when he’s manning the center of the defense.

His defensive compatriots, however, were having a game to forget, with Upamecano looking like a five-year-old lost in the gym. Pavard wasn’t much better, letting Holtmann breeze past him with ease on multiple occasions. Niklas Süle started terribly, but got into a good rhythm as the game progressed. Unfortunately, the damage was already done by then. Hernandez however, did not lose a beat throughout, and was very good at his job. With two aerial duels, two interceptions, a tackle and three blocks (100% success rate) and many successful progressive passes, he had an admirable showing all things considered.

Gosh, I can’t wait till Phonzie’s back. Lucas shines at CB, and without him there, there will always be a massive hole that attackers can exploit. Salzburg looms in the horizon. Yikes.

Meister of the Match: Robert Lewandowski

Bayern’s most hardworking player today was also their best. Lewandowski did everything he could to try and change the outcome of the game. He was pushed and shoved and beaten by the Bochum backline, but our legendary warrior stood his ground, generated his own chances and tackled Bochum defenders in their own penalty area multiple times to regain possession.

This is a man at the peak of his game and it really showed. At times I felt miserable because of the piss poor service he was getting. After a certain point, he decided to take matters into his own hands and played as a deeply lying playmaker for Bayern, generating plays and putting in a lot of work in the buildup. If only the rest of the attack was as sharp and Bayern had a midfield... this man could’ve had another couple of goals at the very least.

That being said, Lewandowski scored only two goals and hit the woodwork with an audacious free kick effort from 25 yards out. Bochum made sure to put three players on him at all times, and he still managed to grab a brace. Such is the unfathomable power and quality of our messiah, who has carried Bayern several times throughout his tenure in Bavaria.

In what amounts to the Bundesliga’s upset of the season, VfL Bochum thoroughly dominated Der Rekordmeister .

Bayern Munich’s defense is still a mess

Where do I even begin with this one? Niklas Süle’s one-on-one defense vs. Christopher Antwi-Adjei which tied the match 1-1 early in the first half was very much “one foot out of the door”-ish and it looks clear to me, as of writing this piece, that Süle might be better off already at Borussia Dortmund if this is what he’s going to give Bayern for the remainder of the season.

Honestly, after watching this game Süle should no longer put on the crest of FC Bayern ever again. He played like a man who simply did not care anymore. Dayot Upamecano is still struggling, still reliably consistent in having both an incredible flash and boneheaded move all in the same game. Thankfully, he’s still incredibly young and has shown enough to warrant continued playing time. For what it's worth, Virgil van Dijk was playing for Celtic when he was Upamecano’s age, so there is still plenty of time.

Benjamin Pavard is....still Benjamin Pavard. The best way I can describe Benji is “aiight” — nothing special. Lucas Hernandez has consistently been FC Bayern’s best defensive player, which is especially noteworthy given he’s playing at his less preferred left-back position instead of center-back, but above all, FC Bayern is absolutely missing Alphonso Davies. His pace, attacking acumen, and overall “Phonzie-ness” is a key cog of this defense running full steam, and with his still out due to Myocarditis and no update as of yet, there are concerns about his late-season and Champions League availability.

Let’s also not ignore the fact Manuel Neuer was suddenly deemed out for a number of weeks due to a knee injury. Bayern’s defense is operating far from any acceptable level at the moment, and it showed especially during Bochum’s incredible 4-1 first half against Bayern. Bochum scored three goals in under 10 minutes. Julian Nagelsmann needs to make changes fast, and whatever it is, he has to hope it’ll fix the lagging consistency issues.

I mean, for all that is holy, Bochum got TWO goals called off for offsides within the first five minutes of the second half.

VfL Bochum players had the game of their careers

VfL Bochum, take a bloody bow! Yes, FC Bayern are playing horrendously at the moment, but this section is not about Bayern’s failures, instead it is more about Bochum’s successes. First, there was Christopher Antwi-Adjei’s solo goal vs Süle that was top tier. Their second goal was an excellent build up play that resulted in an unfortunate penalty on Upamecano. I cannot blame him for that as it just appeared to be an unfortunate swing of the hand and hardly intentional.

But goals number three and four? Oh my word Bochum, take a bow. Honestly, goal number three I have no words for. So instead, take a look yourself.

For goal number four? Same thing applies. Bochum with a double dagger late in the second half to just completely split open this game. While FC Bayern has been badly throughout this game, as these two goals show, Bochum are having the game of their clubs career.

Death, taxes, and Robert Lewandowski scoring

I do not think there is a more valuable player for FC Bayern Munich than our Polish talisman, Robert Lewandowski. Lewandowski is the only player worth highlighting in this match as the rest of the squad from Thomas Müller to Joshua Kimmich performed far below their normal top-tier level.

Even though FC Bayern lost to two absurdly special Bochum goals, Lewandowski kept his ridiculous scoring pace, netting a brace against Bochum. Quite frankly, Lewandowski should have had four goals if it was not for Bochum’s swarming defense on a rather-spectacular bicycle kick in the first half and the bloody woodwork in the second half as he nailed the woodwork late in the second half for an absurd seventh time this season. Lewandowski’s brace marked his 25th Bundesliga goal of the season for the sixth time in his illustrious career, and now Lewandowski needs to only score 16 more goals in the final 14 games to break his own record which he just set last year.

What a total disaster.

Initial reactions and observations

That was diabolical. I don’t know what Nagelsmann was thinking by sending the team out with only a single midfielder, but it didn’t work. This wasn’t Bayern Munich’s worst game of the season, but it was close.

Dayot Upamecano is becoming a problem. At this rate, it feels like not holding onto Sule and Alaba is going to have serious consequences for Bayern’s defense.

Robert Lewandowski was a one man show today. Got two goals and hit the crossbar. He was the only one who played upto par. Everyone else was either mediocre or outright terrible.

Does Gnabry even want a new contract?

No words for this. We better have answers before going up against Salzburg, or else the Champions League dream will end early.

It’s been a week since Bayern Munich last took to the pitch, but the injury situation at the club hasn’t gotten any better. If anything, it’s somehow gotten worse. Julian Nagelsmann now has to deal with the loss of Manuel Neuer, on top of the prolonged absences of Leon Goretzka and Alphonso Davies. With a Champions League game against RB Salzburg coming up in midweek, this is an uncomfortable situation for the coach to be in.

VfL Bochum consider themselves friends to Bayern, but that friendship will probably be left on the sidelines when these two teams meet at the Ruhrstadion. While the fans may enjoy a great relationship, the players of both sides will be vying for all three points. While Bochum may look secure in 11th place, a quick glance at the points column shows them only three points away from a relegation playoff spot. Bayern, meanwhile, want to keep as much daylight between them and Borussia Dortmund as possible.

The last time these two sides met, it was a 7-0 victory for Bayern with the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Joshua Kimmich, Leroy Sane, and Serge Gnabry all getting on the scoresheet. With this far more depleted side manage to do anything similar?

Solo: Kimmich, alone in a midfield far far away....

Bayern Munich usually is known for having a one disastrous game per season. This season however, that norm is set aside this season as Bayern went down to Vfl Bochum in a thundering 4-2 defeat. The game was suspicious from the start, with coach Julian Nagelsmann experimenting with an EA FIFA lineup having only one conventional midfielder and 5 attackers. Full credit to Bochum for completing taking advantage and punishing Nagelsmann and his men for their cheeky lineup. Here are the post game reactions(via @imiasanmia)

Joshua Kimmich usually thrives with a destroyer by his side. Nagelsmann’s lineup had no other midfielder to speak of, let alone a destroyer. Thomas Muller has manned the midfield before. However, Muller had to co-ordinate a 5 pronged attack squad; and he is suited for the 8-10 hybrid role rather than the required 6-8 midfielder today. As a consequence, Kimmich was sorely out of place against an energetic Bochum side.

“We put in our worst performance of the season over the whole game today. We lacked everything you need to win a game. If something like this happens once a season, then it can happen - but it already happened against Gladbach, so we need to be careful” said Kimmich.

The midfielder however downplayed the impact of tactics and attributed the loss more to the “attitude” of the squad. “With such an attitude, such a body language, this has nothing to do with tactics or a game plan. We have to question ourselves and ask ourselves whether that’s the mentality of FC Bayern. It’s happening too often now - I didn’t see anything like this at FC Bayern before”. I partially agree with Kimmich as there were several instances where our defense was caught snoozing or outplayed but it is a stretch to say that tactics were a non-factor in this defeat.

Upamecano and company had a day to forget after conceding four goals against Vfl Bochum.

The coach himself however sees this as a plan that didn’t work. ”Congratulations to Bochum, they deserved their win today. We played a very bad first half. We had a plan, and the plan didn’t work well, so I’m not going to criticize the team. I had to react and make changes earlier. Second half was better, but it was too late” said Nagelsmann.

The scoreline and the manner of the loss is hurting, however, the perspective of a bad plan coupled with a great day in the office for the Bochum team is best way to look at this game. Nagelsmann is a coach who likes to experiment, push things and leave his mark on his teams. Bayern with its deeply ingrained reliance on the double-pivot system has been very challenging for many coaches to move away from it. Nagelsmann is no different. It will be interesting to see if any signings are made in the summer to aide Nagelsmann’s plans better — specifically wingbacks.

Alphonso Davies happens to be the only player who has shown to be fully adaptable as a wingback so far. But the Canadian is unavailable for the meanwhile due to a myocarditis scare and the coach had an update regarding this matter, saying that the 21 year-old “is on his way to recovery.”, is showing good signs and that there will be another check in 2 weeks.

Bayern Munich was the victim of a brilliant performance from VfL Bochum, which saw the home team walk away with a stunning 4-2 victory. Here are some quick hitters on the match:

Well, the worst fears were confirmed: Bayern Munich looked unfocused and unprepared for VfL Bochum, who was not going to lay down for the Rekordmeister.

Whether it was the news of Niklas Süle’s transfer, looking ahead to the Champions League against Red Bull Salzburg, or just overall lethargy, things did not work out for Bayern Munich.

Julian Nagelsmann’s lineup tinkering continued as he opted for a less attacking formation by using a back-four and sending Tolisso to the bench in favor of Dayot Upamecano.

Upamecano getting worked over physically early was not something anyone really wanted to see, but his positioning was actually an even bigger issue than his on-ball defending or physical play.

The beginning of the match definitely appeared to show that Bayern Munich might have been looking a bit past VfL Bochum.

I do love the Alps kits.

The play from Thomas Muller to Kingsley Coman to Robert Lewandowski was fantastic. Lewandowski, of course, just worked wonders with his feet to deposit the ball into the net. For as much as VfL Bochum was giving Bayern Munich problems, the Bavarians are just too talented to be held down for long in most cases.

Not yesterday, though.

Nagelsmann’s ability to find a way to use Coman, Serge Gnabry, and Leroy Sane together has been fascinating, but the alignment has holes and defensive gaps were all over.

Bochum, though, answered back quickly and stunned Bayern with a goal from Christopher Antwi-Adjei. It should be noted that Upamecano and Niklas Süle were both far too lackadaisical on the play. Frankly, both players were slow to react.

That would be the start of a massive first half showing for VfL Bochum as Jurgen Locadia, Cristian Gamboa, and Gerrit Holtmann all followed with goals in the first half.

Gamboa’s goal was just majestic.

It would be incredibly unfair to blame Sven Ulreich. Those goals would have been scored if he and Manuel Neuer were playing goalkeeper together.

One fair question is if the back-line plays differently without the assurance of having Neuer in net? Does it change their mentality? How they space? Does it throw off their reaction time?

I mean...this tweet is pretty incredible. Well done, Gladbach:

Upamecano’s benching for Corentin Tolisso pushed Bayern Munich to a back-three, which (again) seems to be the exact way Nagelsmann really wants to play.

The back-line was not great overall. Upamecano just looks tentative, indecisive, and is struggling. Süle was average, Benjamin Pavard was below average, and Lucas Hernandez was...good, I guess. Hernandez was surely the best of the lot, but when a defense has that many breakdowns, it typically means it was a group effort in being so poor.

The over-arching theme of this match was simply that VfL Bochum wanted it a whole hell of a lot more than Bayern Munich.

Give Lewandowski credit...he kept pushing forward and got another goal.

Former Bayern Munich player Milos Pantovic made an appearance with an 80th minute substitution.

Overall, it was a mess. There were a lot of distractions this week and with the Champions League looming there was a complete loss of focus and motivation. Mostly, I just Nagelsmann to pick a direction for how he wants to play. Back-three? Back-four? All out offense? Balanced? There just has to be some kind of stability. Personally, I think he wants to play a back-three and is trying to tow the line with a back-four to avoid outrage. In the end, he has to coach how he beat sees fit and I’m not wholly sure we are getting that. I don’t have doubts about him being the manager at Bayern Munich, but it is fair to question if shifting things so much is causing too much confusion internally.

It’s a throwback episode to the old days when Chuck and Jake were the only knuckleheads talking Bayern Munich for Bavarian Football Works!

It’s true, after a few consecutive solo runs, Chuck teamed up with Jake to cover the following topics for this episode of the Weekend Warm-up Podcast:

Manuel Neuer’s surprising injury and whether or not Sven Ulreich will be up to the task in filling Neuer’s boots.

A brief look at next week’s Champions League match against Red Bull Salzburg.

The equally shocking transfer of Niklas Süle to Borussia Dortmund.

The possibilities for replacing Süle, who the prime candidates are, and why Bayern Munich might need to think outside the box.

Some quick thoughts on the entertainment world as Chuck gives a quick and dirty review of the latest season of Ozark, while Jake talks Succession and Euphoria.

Bayern Munich dropped points today and is going back to Munich empty-handed.

It was a bad day for Bayern Munich today. Bochum managed to beat Bayern 4:2 after the Bavarians played a poor match. The visiting team played poorly throughout the first half, as they conceded all four goals in a relatively short span.

Naturally, Julian Nagelsmann was very frustrated and disappointed with today’s unexpected loss. In the post-match press conference, via Sport.de, he took the blame on himself: “Congratulations to Bochum, they deserved their win today. We played a very bad first half. We had a plan, and the plan didn’t work well, so I’m not going to criticize the team. I had to react and make changes earlier. The second half was better, but it was too late.”

Nagelsmann explains that the team tried to turn things around in the second half, but the changes came too late, and the comeback was, ultimately, not possible:” We did better in the second half, except the first couple of minutes where we almost conceded a fifth. Had we scored earlier, it would’ve been more exciting. I made the changes too late. In the end, it was a deserved win for Bochum.”

Hopefully, the team manages to shake this defeat off, and they return with a win against RB Salzburg on Wednesday.
