This is some really terrible news for fans of Bayern Munich. Per the official club report, team captain and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has suffered a capsular ligament injury in his right ankle during Tuesday’s DFL Supercup victory over Borussia Dortmund.

Keen-eyed viewers would’ve noticed the moment where Neuer called the physios over to take a look at his foot in the middle of the second half, ostensibly due to some discomfort. While he managed to finish the game without any problems, even getting into an aerial duel with Erling Haaland, it seems that the club’s captain is set for a spell on the sidelines.

There’s been zero info about the severity of the injury, and how long Neuer could be out for. If it’s anything more than a month, he risks missing Bayern’s game against RB Leipzig in the league and the Champions League group stage opener. In Neuer’s absece, Sven Ulreich will likely have to don the keeper’s gloves, while Thomas Muller will pick up the armband.

The timing of this injury will be a big blow to coach Julian Nagelsmann, who has to rely on Neuer’s godly keeping skills to give his defenders some leeway while they find their feet. While Sven is not a poor keeper, he’s no Manuel Neuer — it’s time for Bayern’s defenders to step up in the absence of the best goalkeeper in the world.

Bayern Munich’s Niklas Süle and Dayot Upamecano led the effort to make life difficult for Erling Haaland.

Stopping Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland is no easy task, but Bayern Munich’s backline did just bout as good a job as anyone has against the Norwegian phenom.

Center-backs Niklas Süle and Dayot Upamecano teamed with outside-backs Alphonso Davies and Josip Stanisic to help slow down Haaland, was was a relentless, physical force throughout the contest earlier this week.

Haaland, though, is just a physical marvel and requires the full attention of an entire backline for the entirety of a match. Bayern Munich’s foursome, however, worked diligently to not let Haaland get loose.

The question remains, though, what happens when Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard return to health? A three-man center-back rotation between Süle, Upamecano, and Hernandez at least sounds pretty formidable, while it also looks like you could do a lot worse than having Stanisic backing up Pavard.

Julian Nagelsmann, however, will have to sort all of that out, but the preseason and early parts of the season have given the new boss some confidence in what he has in terms of the quality of the squad’s depth along the backline.

Bayern Munich won the DFL-Supercup against Borussia Dortmund, and the Bavarians showed their strength and won 3:1

The DFL-Supercup is always an interesting match between the Bundesliga winner and the DFB-Pokal winner. This year we had a very interesting match at our hands — Der Klassiker. Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund met with their new coaches for the first time, but Bayern won the match 3:1 and showed their dominance under Julian Nagelsmann.

One of the most interesting moments of the match was when BVB pulled one back, and Erling Haaland demanded more support from the fans. And his routine lasted for a while, as the whole team felt that there is still a possibility of leveling the score line.

As Haaland flailed at the spectators, Leon Goretzka was next to him. You could see Bayern’s mentality on Goretzka’s face — he just grinned at him and took a moment to shake off the anxiety.

Bayern remained calm under pressure and didn’t let Borussia Dortmund take any chance from thereon. In the end, Dortmund defender Manuel Akanji made a critical error in front of BVB’s goal, and Robert Lewandowski took the chance and scored his second of the night.

It was impressive how Bayern handled the pressure, despite having a winless streak in the preseason and an underwhelming Bundesliga opener — their spirit is still there!

After the match, Leon Goretzka told Bild: “It is an absolute prestige duel, and we wanted to demonstrate strength!”

Bayern Munich certainly was able to show just that.

Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka and Serge Gnabry share their thoughts on the Supercup victory against arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund.

After a fairly lusterless start to his stint as Bayern Munich manager, Julian Nagelsmann won his first competitive match on Tuesday and helped the team clinch their maiden silverware of the season as they beat Borussia Dortmund 1-3 in the DFL-Supercup.

Speaking to the press post-game, the players shared their exhilaration of victory but stayed true to their Bavarian mentality of insatiable hunger for more.

“The atmosphere was great, I really enjoyed playing in front of fans again. Dortmund showed they’re a great team. We wanted to show our quality in this prestigious game and we did it well. In the end, we deserved to win”, Leon Goretzka commented on the victory.

Joshua Kimmich, who crossed swords with Marco Reus mid-way through the game, shared his thoughts on the game along the lines of his partner in midfield. He said, “It was an interesting and very intense game. Both teams played a very high pressing game. We had a few more chances and deserved to win. It was a good game and we enjoyed being out there. Against Dortmund, a team with great quality, winning counts double.”

Robert Lewandowski’s stunning header that opened the score line was made possible by a great cross from Serge Gnabry towards the end of the first half. The victory and the added silverware is a confidence booster for him, said the 26-year-old.

“It was a great game. We are happy, that gives you self-confidence. Today we were better. It’s always a top game against Dortmund. You want to win the cup. How we played today was also a sign.”

Bayern have a hectic schedule coming up as they play three games in a single week – Bundesliga games against FC Köln (22nd) and Hertha Berlin (28th), and a mid-week DFB Pokal tie against Bremer SV. Nagelsmann and his men will be looking forward to create and maintain a winning streak.

Julian Nagelsmann finally got his first win as a manager at Bayern Munich.

It happened…it finally happened: Julian Nagelsmann won his first match as manager of Bayern Munich.

“We defended very well and were very aggressive. Unfortunately, we didn’t take the lead straight away. We absolutely deserved to win,” Nagelsmann said after the match (as captured by Tz),

Will the DFL-Supercup victory be the first of many future titles? Nagelsmann hopes so — and he explained his desire to win in an extremely odd way.

“First of all, I would like more titles. I have such small hamster teeth, as you can see, and so of course I would like to be a ‘Title Hamster*’,” Nagelsmann said.

Uh, okay. “Title Hamster” it is.

Anyway, Nagelsmann went on to credit his predecessor, Hansi Flick, with playing a part in the team’s success.

“We don’t have too much time to celebrate. The title is a reward for last season when Hansi Flick became champion. I’m happy, but the title belongs to more people than me,” Nagelsmann said.

(*BFW Note: We ran the “Title Hamster” translation through two auto-translators and one of our German speakers and none could dispute “Title Hamster”, so you know what, ‘We’ll do it live, (BLEEP) IT!’ It was really too good not to use. Even the Daily Mail — albeit probably confused like us — went for it)

Bayern Munich’s win comes courtesy of some interesting tactical tinkering by coach Julian Nagelsmann.

Having started the season on a sour note by drawing to Gladbach, Bayern Munich have now pulled one back by winning the first silverware of the Julian Nagelsmann era. Borussia Dortmund may have been missing some key players in this year’s edition of the DFL Supercup, but that didn’t make this game any less entertaining.
Der Klassiker is here yet again! This time in the form of the annual DFL-Supercup. Here are the six observations from this match.

Neuer, a god among men

I mean, what else can be said? Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer is the best goalkeeper in the world. I will die on that hill and today was another showcase in his ungodly reflexes and skills. There are no words I can use to explain Neuer’s absurdly clutch play. Instead, just watch for yourselves.

What a save by Manuel Neuer to deny Marco Reus pic.twitter.com/KAhHvG9evU
— ESPN FC (@ESPNFC) August 17, 2021

Sloppy yet fierce

This was absolutely no friendly match as many pundits tend to call it. It was fierce, angry, and dirty as all can be. The animosity between FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund was in clear display today with the abundance of angry challenges, borderline tackles and tactical fouls. There were moments when the physicality started to get more malicious, but the referee was content at allowing the physically to not get too far. If the other two Der Klassiker matches are like this, those will absolutely be must see matches.

I’m loving those Alps

Brief interlude in my observations, but man those new third kits are BEAUTIFUL. Like they are already top-3 of my all-time favorite Bayern jerseys. I don’t ever remember seeing this creative with them and I absolutely love it. They were a pure joy to see today.

Bending but not breaking

I have to give it to Bayern’s defense. I know they’re dealing with some compatibility issues, which often come with new additions to defense, where unspoken understanding reigns supreme. But Dayot Upamecano and Niklas Süle did an excellent job at handling Erling Haaland. Often times, they used their speed and physicality, especially Upamecano, to push Haaland out wide and limit the clear-cut chances. Upamecano and Alphonso Davies were teaming up to quite efficient effect and will be a partnership to watch. If they continue to build, Lucas Hernandez might be the odd man looking in yet again.

One more thing, Joseph Stanisic is the right-back of the future. Man, this is two straight games in which he was just extremely good. If you told me at the end of last year Stanisic would be our starting RB, I’d be a little concerned even if excited to see his development. But he has hit the ground running and has been...Davies-esque. If he can maintain this form, it’ll be hard to re-insert Pavard as RB1.

Jadon Sancho who?

Borussia Dortmund look absolutely lethal and if it was not for Manuel Neuer, they would’ve been up 2-0 before Lewandowski’s bullet of a header. I was one of the first here at Bavarian Football Works to moan about the loss of Jadon Sancho to one of our direct competitors, but man if Dortmund is good at anything it is this insane ability to find random youth attackers who are absurdly talented and seem to develop quick links with the established players such as Marco Reus and now Haaland. I think Borussia Dortmund will be just fine. Their defense, however, yikes. They better hope they continue to score a lot of goals because that defense could not stop a granny with a walker if they wanted too.

Dagger, thy name is Robert

Who else was it going to be? Y’know, if you want to win a game against Bayern, you’re better off not gifting the best player on the planet this:

Lewandowski with a gift in front of goal pic.twitter.com/Azt87ohIsP
— ESPN FC (@ESPNFC) August 17, 2021

Lewandowski scored twice and was per usual the reason we won yet again. People, enjoy the greatness of Lewandowski while you can.

Der Klassiker gives Julian Nagelsmann his first Bayern Munich trophy.

Bayern Munich clinched the DFL-Supercup with a 3-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund. Here are the BFW Match Awards:

Jersey Swap: Marco Reus

The Borussia Dortmund captain was in great form today putting pressure on all match; involved in nearly every Dortmund shot on goal. Marco Reus also brought the intensity getting into scuffles with Joshua Kimmich and Corentin Tolisso trying to set the tone for his team. Reus had a 1v1 opportunity denied by Manuel Neuer early in the match but struck back with a beautiful outside curler for BVB’s first goal.

Der Bomber: Robert Lewandowski

In competition with Neuer for MOTM honors, Robert Lewandowski had a phenomenal game. He had early chances that didn’t go in but ended the day with a pair of goals. His first goal to open the scoring was a thunderous header and the second punishing a sloppy pass by Manuel Akanji near goal. As always, his work rate and swapping runs outside created chances for the rest of the attack.

Der Fußballgott: Joshua Kimmich

It was a quiet, albeit not bad day from the Bayern Munich midfield duo. I can’t think of a truly memorable moment from either, just a solid workman performance from both Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka. Kimmich seemed to put in a significant defensive effort today, earning him the nod for me.

Der Kaiser: Niklas Süle

Niklas Süle and Dayot Upamecano each had a terrific game minimizing Erling Haaland. The Norwegian was never going to be completely taken out and required some 1v1 Neuer magic to keep him off the score sheet, but the Bayern center-backs were on him all match long. Süle played him smartly, often pushing him wide to have help from Davies and matching physicality big man to big man. It’s tough task to bully the 6’4” striker but Süle bodied him up and picked up an early yellow for his tough defense.

Meister of the Match: Manuel Neuer

What more can you say about Manuel Neuer? He was in full sweeper-keeper form today. He had ridiculous 1v1 saves on Reus and Haaland early in the match to keep from falling behind and came 40 yards out of goal to snuff out another opportunity colliding with Haaland. He quite simply kept Bayern in the match, what a performance.
