We received a LOT of submissions, so thank you for your votes!

Hello and welcome to part 3 of our Fan Team of the Season lists. After our lists three weeks ago, it’s time to see who our fans picked. We’re aware that there may be bias (we are a Bayern Munich blog after all), but that’s why we do these three different lists.

Here, we will show you who you picked, compare it to who we picked and I’ll give my thoughts on your picks.

Just like our Staff vote, we received the most submissions for our Fan Overall Team of the Season. For our Staff ToTS, we had experts like Derek Rae, Raphael Honigstein, Ian Paul Joy, and Phil Bonney give their picks. For the Fan ToTS we received nearly 150 submissions.

Here begins a clear and obvious trend. It seems you all are a fan of a team called “Bayern Munich” and will pick players regardless of statlines. We will see some more egregious examples further down the line, but picking Neuer over Gulacsi is not one of those. Neuer is the best keeper in the world afterall.

These also make sense, but it’s the manner in which they differed from our staff list. Müller’s choice was close to unanimous in both the staff and fan votes. Goretzka, meanwhile, won far easier in this one than the staff picks. In that one, the other half of Bayern’s double pivot won by a single vote.
Who are you most looking forward to watching next season?

If there is one thing that Bayern Munich offers its fans, it is a lot of hope for next season — especially when it comes to the quality of players on the squad.

For this category, we are seeking to find out who most people are looking forward to seeing next season. Could Robert Lewandowski chase breaking his own Bundesliga goal scoring record? Are some folks eager to see how Jamal Musiala develops? Or...are other folks eager to see how Dayot Upamecano acclimates to Bavaria?

Those are just three options, but there are a lot more. Here are the players our staff is looking forward to watching next season:

Chuck Smith

Leon Goretzka: More than any player, Goretzka has made “the leap” over the past two seasons. Once an after-thought in the Bayern Munich midfield, Goretzka seems poised to continue his rapid ascent and become an even more dominant presence...and I can’t wait to see it.

Ineednoname

Jamal Musiala: Julian Nagelsmann is renowned for working with young talent, and Musiala is one of the brightest youngsters we’ve had in the Bundesliga for some time now. He’s only 18 and there’s a ton of room for him to grow, both literally and figuratively. If handled right, he could even eclipse some of his more experienced compatriots.

Samrin

Omar Richards: Many a fantastic right-back/left back has taken the pitch for Bayern down the years — Joshua Kimmich, Philipp Lahm, David Alaba, Bixente Lizarazu, Holger Badstuber (more center-back than left-back), Benjamin Pavard and Alphonso Davies are some of the recent ones, some more legendary than the others of course. Richards can play as a left-back; I am not sure if he will be used there but I really do wonder what his signing is all about. I wonder if he will flourish like Davies; I wonder if we will have to wait a season to see him spring into action. I wonder whether being at a club with a rich history of left and right-backs will lead to Richards becoming one himself down the line.

Schnitzel01

Lucas Hernandez: One of the world’s best CBs on his day, the Frenchman just didn’t get enough opportunities to impress us on a consistent basis. He was constantly benched in favour of Alaba, which is a decision that confuses me to this day. However, moving forward, I’m super excited to see him potentially emerge as the defensive leader Bayern needs and show the world why Bayern paid 80m for his services. He has it in him; he just needs more starts to show us what he’s got. And I have a very good feeling about next season.

RuneKingThor

Serge Gnabry: The past season never really saw the real Serge Gnabry. Kingsley Coman was the star winger in Munich for most of the season. Coming off the high of a treble win, alleged personal issues to deal with and a congested schedule could have contributed to Gnabry’s lengthy dip in form.

A fresh season with a full pre-season period, coupled with the arrival of Julian Nagelsmann is the perfect opportunity for Serge to bounce back. His goal contribution and lethality in the box were particularly missed in the quarter final against PSG. Having played under Nagelsmann previously and hungry to make a comeback, Gnabry is certainly one of the most exciting players to watch for in the new season.

Jack Laushway

Lucas Hernandez: This past year Lucas finally showed glimpses of what is to come for the French defender. He was both exceptional and consistent, however, didn’t get enough time on the pitch to really get into full flight.

Next season this is sure to change. We all know that Nagelsmann needs to revitalize this defense, and no doubt, Hernandez will be a major part of that plan. He has all the potential to become Bayern’s next great leader of the backline. I am very excited to see him deliver some more world-class performances.

Match Buildup

On paper, this match wasn’t really anything special. Bayern Munich had wrapped up their Bundesliga title two matchdays ago, and there was nothing but pride to play for. Yes, one may argue that they needed to salvage some pride after their 2-2 draw with Freiburg on the previous matchday, but the champions could not be mathematically toppled from their spot no matter what the result.

Opponents Augsburg also had little riding on the line, having already secured another season in the Bundesliga. But having won only once in their past six games, they were probably looking for some pride, more than Bayern in fact.

On Munich’s end, there were still a few things that made the game more special than it seemed. For one, Robert Lewandowski was just one goal shy of breaking Gerd Muller’s record for most goals in a single Bundesliga season. Lewandowski and Muller were tied at 40 goals each, and it remained to be seen whether the Pole could break that record after one of the most prolific seasons of his career. The game also served as a farewell match for departing trio Javi Martinez, Jerome Boateng, and David Alaba, not to mention coach Hansi Flick and assistant coaches Hermann Gerland and Miroslav Klose. Would it be a happy ending for everyone involved?

Match Summary

Bayern started with Boateng and Alaba in the first eleven, with Martinez guaranteed to come on at some point. The champions wasted no time in getting on the scoresheet, Serge Gnabry’s cross being turned into the visitors’ net by Augsburg captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw after just nine minutes. Gnabry then got a goal of his own when he connected with the ball after it had been ping-ponged around in the area.

Lucas Hernandez conceded a cheap penalty midway through the first half, but Manuel Neuer denied Daniel Caligiuri with a strong save. Bayern responded through Joshua Kimmich, who fired home quite a belter from thirty or so yards out. Ten minutes later, Kingsley Coman scored a long range effort as well, although his shot was more a low arrow compared to Kimmich’s high rocket.

Lewandowski was chasing that elusive goal but was denied repeatedly by the opposing defense and keeper Rafal Gikiewicz. To make matters slightly worse, Bayern conceded off a set-piece header from Andre Hahn. Just five minutes later, the visitors halved the deficit through a goal from Florian Niederlechner.

But that was the end of Augsburg’s futile attempt at a comeback, and Bayern took their time in honoring Boateng and Alaba as they were both subbed off before full time. Martinez, meanwhile, took to the field in the last half hour of the game to see his Bundesliga career out.

All eyes were now on Lewandowski as the minutes passed by. But lo and behold, he did get his goal, and in dramatic fashion. Just as the clock struck ninety, Leroy Sane’s long range effort was fumbled by Gikiewicz, and Lewandowski pounced on the second ball to score his 41st goal of the campaign, breaking a 40-year-old record.

Why was this match special?

It was a fitting farewell for so many. Boateng, Alaba, and Martinez got to say their goodbyes in style, as did the departing coaches. The trio finished their Bayern careers with a boatload of trophies each, including two trebles, one sextuple, and a ton of Bundesligas. Bayern will miss them dearly, not just their valuable experience, but also the hard work that they constantly put into the club. That work ethic is not something that hundreds of millions of euros will get you anywhere.

It also marked the end of a successful era under Hansi Flick. Flick was by no means a perfect coach, there is no such thing. But he was the closest thing to a perfect coach that Bayern had seen in a long time, and he ended his Bayern journey with seven trophies in the space of just two years. Now that’s impressive. What better way to say goodbye to a coach defined by his bold, attacking style than with a blowout win that featured said exact style?

Of course, this game wouldn’t have been complete without Lewandowski’s record-breaking goal. Lewandowski enjoyed the best league season of his career, clinching the top scorer award and scoring a whopping 41 goals in just 29 games. Had it not been for his injury, it could have been more. I guess we’ll never know.

On a smaller note, this match was unique in that it featured Bayern wearing their new away kit of the season. Normally, the final match of the season would showcase the new home kit, as has been the case for many years. But this year, for some reason, the away kit was released first, and was worn on the final matchday. In fact, at the time of writing, the new home kit still has not been released. But few are complaining; in fact, the new sleek black and gold away kit was a good choice to wear on such a special day.

And finally, it was not just a farewell for Bayern’s faithful, but also for referee Markus Schmidt, who officiated the final match of his career before retiring.

Aftermath

The Bayern team received their medals and the Meisterschale shortly after the final whistle went. Captain Neuer yielded the trophy to Martinez, Boateng, and Alaba to lift first, just as he did to Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben, and Rafinha upon their departures from Munich two years ago. What a gentleman.

Lewandowski also received his fourth consecutive Torjagerkanone, having finished top scorer of the Bundesliga in every season since 2017/2018.

The team thus put an end to a dramatic, entertaining, and ultimately successful season, having won four trophies and written history. But there was little time to rest for most of the squad, as the European Championship was just around the corner. Neuer and his German compatriots headed to Austria to join Die Mannschaft, while the rest of the internationals did the same to their national teams. Let’s hope for a fun and exciting Euros!

Who do you want to see transfer into Bayern Munich?

We already know that Bayern Munich will not be making a big splash in the transfer market. With some holes to fill and questionable depth, the Bavarians could be looking to add some cheap talent at key positions.

Still, a limited budget is going to make it extremely difficult for Bayern Munich to fill out its roster. Below, our staff jotted down which players they most want to see transfer in — some were realistic, others...not so much:

Chuck Smith

Florian Grillitsch, Hoffenheim: I was tempted to go with Ivan Perisic because he’s experienced and valuable, but I have no idea if Julian Nagelsmann is going to deploy a system where Perisic could be of use. Because I think Corentin Tolisso should move on and I am not sure if Marc Roca can break through at Bayern Munich, though, I looked at the central midfeld — in particular a player who operated under Nagelsmann with great success: Florian Grillitsch. Grillitsch could provide depth as a “6” or an “8” and because Kimmich and Goretzka can both push up to higher roles, Grillitsch could be the type of player the squad needs for an experienced depth player. I do worry about adding another relatively young midfielder — and would actually prefer a more grizzled veteran — but with an expiring deal in 2022, Grillitsch could be attainable.

Ineednoname

Callum Hudson-Odoi, Chelsea: He’s great and you know I’m right. Stop denying the truth.

Frenkie de Jong would look good in red, eh?

Jack Laushway

Frenkie de Jong, FC Barcelona: There were plenty of players I considered. In the end, I knew I wanted to select a centre-back or a central midfielder. Matthias Ginter would be an excellent option for a centre-back, and I believe he could do great things under Nagelsmann. However, I opted for Frenkie de Jong. This loveable Ajax product could do wonders for Bayern, as an incredibly dynamic midfielder. Signing De Jong would allow a stronger rotation for Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich, taking some strain off their load. De Jong fits their same role and gives Bayern an option to come for many years, assuming he would stay. This is a bit of a less realistic option for the club, and would only happen with the outgoing sales of Corentin Tolisso and more. However, if the club can afford it, they would have another gem in their midfield for the next decade.

Samrin

Emil Forsberg, RB Leipzig: I know this will not happen but I wish it would. There is a touch of brilliance about Forsberg that’s a rare find — he doesn’t score as often as he should but he knows where the goal is. He has some Raumdeuter ala Thomas Müller type qualities; he can play further forward as a target man and he can play as a ten. It came down to between him, Jonas Hofmann and Lars Stindl for me. Stindl is the face of Borussia Mönchengladbach currently and that is not going to happen, especially considering Stindl is the wrong side of 30; Hofmann can make clever runs from deep and can come in from wide positions — he is quite similar to some players Bayern already have and I can’t see him leave Gladbach either, or, for that matter, I can’t see Bayern pursuing him.

Schnitzel01

Ryan Gravenberch, Ajax: Bayern are in need of another midfielder. I feel the club is seriously considering the sales of Michaël Cuisance, Tolisso and Adrian Fein (who haven’t impressed at all) and although two of them might still have time on their side (Cuisance, Fein), they still haven’t shown enough to entertain the possibility that they may have a high ceiling. Bayern should be able to get at least 35-40m from the combined sale of the 3 players, and they could invest around 30m from those proceeds on Gravenberch, Ajax’s rising star.

If I had my way and if Bayern had loads of cash, I would’ve called for the purchase of Leipzig’s Marcel Sabitzer, but keeping the financial situation in mind, it doesn’t get better than the Dutch holding midfielder. At just 19 years of age, he’s already a mainstay in the Ajax midfield and has top clubs all around Europe vying for his signature. Playing primarily at the 6, he is great as a defensive midfielder with great awareness, tackling ability and is also quick on the ball. His passing, stellar dribbling and great vision allow him to also take the role of a deep lying playmaker. In short, he’s an all in 1 package and players like him are uncommon. If he comes to Bayern, he’d have the chance to perfect his trade with guidance from the world’s best. Bayern has to consider bringing him in this summer.

RuneKingThor

N’Golo Kanté, Chelsea: ‘N’Golo the Omnipresent’ would make an excellent addition to the Bayern midfield. Kanté and his clones would seal the backline from the opposition leaving the Bavarian attackers free to have a greater focus on attack and score in the double digits. Simple.

On a more serious note, Kanté would solve the current depth issue that has plagued Bayern Munich since the departure of the Spanish maestro Thiago Alcantara. His ability to play as a 6 or an 8 will allow the coach to adequately rest Kimmich and Goretzka as well as add another dimension to Bayern’s current pedal-to-the-metal playstyle. However, the Frenchman’s current contract with Chelsea that runs until 2023 coupled with his importance to their team sadly makes this a dream transfer.

Raumdeuter#25

Konrad Laimer, RB Leipzig: Assuming that Thiago Alcântara is staying with Liverpool, I believe Konrad Laimer should be our top transfer target for this summer. While Marc Roca and Corentin Tolisso are great players in their respective roles, it became noticeable over the course of the 2020/21 season that both of the midfielders lacked certain attributes that were necessary to execute Hansi Flick’s plan to its full potential. But it seems that incoming coach Julian Nagelsmann will also be implementing principles of pressing similar to his predecessor.

In this sense, Laimer aptly fulfills all of our roster needs - a destroyer defensive-midfielder (Javi Martinez replacement), a dynamic pressing machine who is familiar with the double pivot (compatible with our system), Nagelsmann’s favorite (knows the coach), a backup right-back (versatile player) and an Austria International (remember that Bayern have never won a treble without an Austrian). Given the tiring job of our midfielders, signing Laimer could be beneficial in providing rest to Leon Goretzka or Joshua Kimmich without experiencing any significant drop off in Bayern’s midfield quality.
