Despite Pep Guardiola's assurances that Bayern were not looking past Gladbach in anticipation of the season-defining Champions League return leg against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, all signs indicate that this is exactly what happened, as Bayern give up the tying goal late to postpone the German title celebrations in a very mediocre showing.

Too many workers, not enough artists

In a desire to rest as many key players as possible, Pep rotated heavily, leaving only three players in the starting lineup from Wednesday's Champions League clash with Atletico. In came seldom-used Sebastian Rode, Serdar Tasci, and Joshua Kimmich, all players known more for their defensive prowess than their ballskills, which put almost the entire burden of being creative on Mario Götze, who was playing behind the single forward Thomas Müller. Though Mario did an admirable job with what he had to work with, laying down some impressive dribbles through blocks of defenders, it constituted too little creativity across the whole lineup, especially for a team like Bayern.

That explains in large part why Bayern had so much trouble creating scoring chances, with their only goal coming off a corner, and not from open play.

Too many soldiers, not enough generals

This rotation also showed in another aspect of Bayern's game: nobody seemed to want to take charge. Players like Rode and Kimmich would shuffle the ball across in the midfield, rather than push the ball forward, or take a chance, even when an opening for a shot presented itself. Maybe they're too used to deferring to the bigger personalities, and didn't flip the mental switch that they needed to pick up more responsibility, but a Philipp Lahm, Xabi Alonso or Arturo Vidal boot on the ball (and up their butts) was missing today.

Pep experiments with three Center Backs, results inconclusive

Along with giving some rare playing time to Tasci (who looked alright), and giving Medhi Benatia some much-needed time on the ball after lengthy injury absences, Bayern fans were elated to see the boss of the defense, Jerome Boateng, get his long-awaited debut after a three-month layoff. The result was a five-man defense, with the three centerbacks flanked by Rafinha on the right and Juan Bernat on the left. But, as we are used to from the Catalan coach, that really meant that Bayern were playing with three in the back, with Boateng taking up the middle, while Benatia moved to cover the right side, and Tasci manned the left. Rafinha and Bernat moved up the wings to support the offense.

Results: All three CBs looked decent (especially Benatia), considering the lack of recent playing time, but looked vulnerable on through balls, one of which resulted in Andre Hahn's tying goal.

Jerome Boateng was dialing in his long ball passes, ready for Tuesday?

The aforementioned Boateng looked sufficiently comfortable, but was still a little rusty after being off for so long. He spent his 68 minutes of time on the field getting reacquainted with real competition, while trying to dial in his long balls into the forwards. Some looked like he hadn't missed any time, some looked like something I would see in my old man beer leagues.

The question is, did Pep pull him out (he was replaced by David Alaba) because he was gassed? Or was Guardiola being cautious with someone who had missed three months? Or was he saving him for a surprise start on Tuesday in what might possibly be the defining game of the coach's career at Bayern?

Atletico Madrid denies Bayern's fans a chance to celebrate clinching the title

No matter how often a coach assures reporters that the next game is the only one he and his team are focusing on (and Pep does it all the time), it was painfully obvious, at least by the time the lineups were revealed, that nothing could have been further from the truth. The impending arrival of Atletico Madrid for the return leg at the Allianz Arena has everyone's attention, and that was the main reason that Guardiola benched (or left off the roster) so many key players. Without the CL distraction, this game probably is a formality, and the fans in Munich would have been rewarded with seeing the Meisterschale today.

So, thanks Atletico, for making the home-clinching celebration wait go into its 18th year. Maybe Carlo Ancelotti can do it next season.

The title celebration has been put on hold for at least another week as Bayern draw Gladbach at home. These 4 lads are the standouts

Tip Of The Cap: Jerome Boateng. Grotesque new haircut aside, Boa looked very good for the 67' he was on the pitch. He positioned himself well and teamed up with Serdar Tasci to form an organized back line. It's no coincidence that Gladbach scored the equalizer less than five minutes after he was subbed off. Here's hoping that he is fit and ready to go a full 90' this Tuesday.

Golf Clap: Kingsley Coman. He managed to dribble and fly past most everyone on the opposing side today, and if he had just a smidgeon of help, probably could have had several assists today. Gladbach definitely respected his skill as every time he had the ball, multiple players were all over him.

Standing Ovation: Joshua Kimmich. A quiet game from the 21 year old, but an impressive one no doubt. Playing in what seems like his 12th different position this season, Kimmich led the team in touches and passes with a whopping 96% accuracy and also having two of them lead to shots on goal including an assist on Thomas Muller's goal. He didn't seem to stand out in a good way or a bad way, but a look at the numbers show that he did indeed have a strong performance..

Meister Of The Match: Thomas Muller. Seemingly the only source of Bayern's attack, Thomas Muller took control of this game at times with a tenacity that can be rare to see from him. Usually content to take what the defense gives him, while playing off his teammates, Tommy created many scoring opportunities on his own with five shots, and a goal. Hopefully he didn't tire himself too much as this version of Muller could be very valuable in Bayern's upcoming clash with Athletico Madrid.

Jersey Swap: Andre Hahn. The 25 year old right winger was easily the most dangerous player for Gladbach in this match. He had four shots as well as nabbing the equalizing goal and came inches away from getting a 2nd goal as well. On the defensive end, he also managed an impressive four interceptions. Not much went right for either squad, but Hahn made the most of his opportunities and deserves some recognition.

A rotated Bayern Munich could not clinch the Bundesliga title.

Bayern Munich are not Bundesliga champions yet. The Rekordmeister passed up a chance to clinch their fourth-straight Bundesliga title on Saturday, dropping points to Champions League hopefuls Borussia Mönchengladbach in a 1-1 draw. Due to face Atlético Madrid in an era-defining second leg, Bayern's pragmatic football could not get the three points to give the home crowd an early title celebration.

Playing with five defenders, Bayern were not the same possession-dominating team Pep Guardiola sides are known for. Instead, their play attempted to emulate the physicality Atlético Madrid displayed last week. Serdar Tasci and Sebastian Rode, two squad players rotated into the lineup, disrupted Gladbach's midfield with rough challenges, forcing Daniel Siebert to issue both yellow cards early in the game.

Their conservative approach did not mean Bayern did not have the attacking punch they needed to get the crucial three points. Thomas Müller, who felt slighted after not starting against Atlético Madrid last week, headed in a corner in the sixth minute to give Bayern the early lead. The goal was his 20th of the Bundesliga season, a mark that only Robert Lewandowski (25) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (22) have bested this season.

Bayern were able to rest on the foundation of that early goal, but Gladbach still gave their defensive set-up a lot to handle. André Hahn, who frequently got the best of Tasci and Juan Bernat in the game, forced a save out of Manuel Neuer, getting on the end of an Ibrahima Traoré cross. Granit Xhaka came close as well, dashing through the midfield before firing a shot near-post Neuer had to deflect away from a corner.

Hahn would finally get his chance, providing the fifth-place side with a title-stopping equalizer. Mahmoud Dahoud played a ball through to substitute Lars Stindl, who squared it for Hahn. The former Augsburg midfielder, who had missed most of the season with knee injury, hammered a shot into the back of the net.

The equalizer woke Bayern back up, but it was not enough to provide the league leaders with a winner. The Reds will now have to wait until after the Champions League semifinal to collect their deserved title, with matches against Ingolstadt and Hannover left on the schedule.

It's a personal record for him.

Thomas Müller scored his 20th goal of the season in the sixth minute of Bayern Munich's match against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Müller won the corner and then won the header leading to the goal. Initial reports were that Serdar Tasci touched it last, but the replays showed that he never made contact with the ball.

Twenty goals is by far the most that Müller has ever scored in a single Bundesliga season. Before this season, Müller hit thirteen goals on four different occasions. He also has scored 31 goals in all competitions, the most of his career.

The goal put Müller and Robert Lewandowski on a combined goal total of 47 in the Bundesliga this season, which makes them the seventh highest scoring duo in Bundesliga history.

This could be a momentous weekend.

It's not too bad being a Bayern Munich fan in the spring of 2016. In addition to having a shot at another UEFA Champions League trophy, Bayern can clinch the 2015-16 Bundesliga title with a victory on Saturday against Borussia Mönchengladbach at the Allianz Arena.

On Sunday at the Grünwalder Stadion in Munich, another Bundesliga title can be won when Bayern Frauen host Bayer Leverkusen. Bayern need only a solitary point to clinch their second consecutive league trophy, and Leverkusen need only one point to secure another season in the Frauen Bundesliga and avoid relegation. It won't be an easy match for Bayern, as Leverkusen have won four of their last six matches in the league.

Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has already promised another dual celebration on the balcony at the Marienplatz for both teams when they receive their respective trophies. Last season was the first time that both the men and women won the league championships in the same season, and they celebrated in style in front of the fans.

History.

A single victory separates Bayern Munich from history. The Bavarians host Borussia Mönchengladbach at the Allianz Arena, and the three points gives Bayern their record fourth straight Bundesliga championship.

While their attention is certainly focused on their upcoming UEFA Champions League Semifinal second leg against Atletico Madrid, the chance to clinch another league title is certainly exhilarating for the players and staff. With the Atleti match on Tuesday, it will be interesting to see what kind of rotation Pep Guardiola uses for the match.

With only one win out of their last three matches, Gladbach have been unable to fully take advantage of Hertha Berlin's poor run of form. With only three matches remaining in the season, Gladbach are one point behind Hertha for the fourth and final Champions League position.

Bayern hold their Bundesliga destiny in their own hands. What a glorious feeling.

Once the lineups are released, this thread will be updated.
