After struggling early, Bayern hammer home three goals in the second half to temporarily move ten points clear of Dortmund.

1. Tough first half to watch

Nothing. Happened. We had one, maybe two, semi-exciting moments in the first 45 minutes. Schalkes back-line was rock solid and made very few mistakes, giving Bayern very few opportunities to make things happen. Credit to Schalke for coming in and executing their game plan to near perfection in the first half. They put five men in the back and waited for their chances to hit on the counter. It's something many have tried, but few have done with any success.

2. No one impressed offensively in the first half

The only player on the pitch that played relatively well for Bayern in the first half was Medhi Benatia. Yes...Medhi Benatia, a man who has become sort of a scapegoat for all things Bayern in recent months. This positive appearance is hopefully a sign of things to come. The meagre offensive output changed in the second half, as the 1-0 really opened things up a bit and created more room for our offensive players to operate. Schalke arguably needed a result more than Bayern did, so once they conceded, they had no choice but to play more aggressively.

3. Counter-attacking defense was solid

Bayern did a great job of getting men back on the counter today as they didn't really let up many clear chances for Schalke to take advantage of. Alabas speed really helps in this regard, with his pace allowing him to make up for small defensive lapses. Arturo Vidal also helps immensely, as his tireless work ethic means that he'll be around the ball at all times, whether it's to make things happen on offense, or to win the ball back on defense.

4. Robert Lewandowski!!

Lewandowksi reminds me a lot of former striker Roy Makaay in the way he can be virtually invisible the entire game, and then out of no where score a goal or two. His first goal came after a sublime chest down on a Vidal header, and the second goal, a beautiful header against the momentum of his body, really sealed the deal for Bayern on the day and has - for now - put them 10 points clear of Dortmund who play Hamburg tomorrow. It was his first goal in four games, and getting him back into a goal-scoring mood will be a necessity if Bayern want to beat Athletico Madrid.

5. A good game for squad rotation

Kingsley Coman, Mario Götze, and Medhi Benatia all started, with Coman and Götze completing all 90 minutes for the first time in quite a bit. Coman has missed some time with a muscular injury, and everyone knows about Götzes recent struggles. Seeing Benatia play without getting injured was also a welcomed sight. Sebastian Rode came on in the 78th minute (!) and replaced an excellent Arturo Vidal. Furthermore, Thomas Müller got a well deserved day off, as did Thiago. Fresh legs could be a huge factor when coming up against Athletico in two weeks, and giving some players the game off/only subbing them on for short shifts was important today. All in all, a pretty good game.

FC Bayern puts the pressure on Borussia Dortmund with a home win against Schalke 04

With the matches coming fast and hard across three competitions, Bayern Munich capitalized on their seven-point lead in the Bundesliga to rotate the squad for the visit Schalke 04. Six changes were made from the team that knocked Benfica out of the Champions League. Medhi Benatia, Rafinha, Juan Bernat occupied the defensive positions alongside David Alaba. Meanwhile, Mario Götze and Kingsley Coman joined the midfield contingent and Robert Lewandowski returned up top.

The home team started the match brightly as usual and dictated the pace of the entire game with their intricate passing and domineering possession. Schalke predictably sat deep and tried to counterattack whenever possible. The best chance of the first half came in the form of a Robert Lewandowski header that was touched just wide of the post by Ralf Fährmann. Götze played the ball into the path of Rafinha's overlapping run, and the Brazilian's pinpoint cross picked Lewandowski out in a sea of white shirts but the striker was denied by an excellent save from the Schalke keeper.

Bayern turned up the heat to begin the second half but early chances from Coman, Götze, and Douglas Costa were all hit right at Fährmann. The breakthrough finally came in the 54th minute through the league-leading goalscorer Lewandowski. The prolific Pole chested Vidal's cross down before turning and firing a left-footed shot on the half-volley past the helpless Schalke keeper.

Lewandowski struck again ten minutes later for his 27th Bundesliga goal of the season and his 38th in all competitions. Rafinha once again put in a precision cross following an overlapping run, but this time Lewandowski directed his header across the face of goal and beyond the reach of Fährmann.

The game was dead and buried in the 73rd minute when substitute Franck Ribéry danced into the box and poked the ball past two defenders to an unmarked Vidal, who side-footed into the net from close range.

Although Schalke's defense weathered the storm well for the entirety of the first half, they were unable to keep Bayern at bay in the second half. The Schalke offense was largely ineffective and any attempts at counterattacks were quickly stifled by a Bayern defense that was rarely called upon. A clean sheet and strong all-around performance will be just what Guardiola ordered as the team enters a congested period of Bundesliga, Deutscher Pokal, and Champions League matches.

Everyone loves the Bundesliga.

Bayern Munich and Schalke return to the field on Saturday in the Bundesliga's late game. Thirty points separate the two teams in the table, and Bayern will be looking to show that they're that much better on the field at the Allianz Arena, too.

With a win, Bayern can build their lead at the top of the Bundesliga table to a full ten points over Borussia Dortmund. BVB do not play until Sunday. Schalke are presently fighting for their European lives and could use any points to stay in the race.

After the match, there will only be four games left in the season. The trophy is closer to Bayern's grasp.

For those in the United States, this game will be aired on the the Fox broadcast network. The Bundesliga games that have found their way to Fox this season have brought in a bigger audience than the games on Fox Sports 1 or 2. There should be a lot of eyes on this one.

Once the lineups are released, this thread will be updated.

Bayern Munich are three wins away from clinching their fourth-straight Bundesliga title, but have to face giant-killers Schalke to do so.

Now is a weird time for Bayern Munich. Normally, the title is wrapped up by now, for it was matchday 30 last season when they assured their 25th league title. They are nine points away this time around, and still have a tough set of opponents to vanquish before the title can be theirs.

Schalke is the first, and though their form has been inconsistent (see below), they have gotten results against the other two attacking forces in Germany – Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach. Those two results in recent weeks were in Veltins Arena though, and the Königsblauen have not performed well away from home this season – 17 points away as opposed to 28 points at home.

Pep Guardiola said in his press conference on Friday he would sit anybody who believes they are already champions, a stern warning against complacency. André Breitenreiter does not think hiding is useful for his young team, and if Bayern let them into the game, they might be more assured than afraid.

The Squad

Ironic, how Bayern drew Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, for they are becoming their Spanish adversaries in one respect: they are doing just enough to get results. The Bayern we are currently seeing is far removed from the club that was racking up goals in September and October, but with still enough time to peak in the season, their abnormal form is acceptable.

As many clubs have shown this season, abnormal form can get the job done against Schalke too. Even if Guardiola rotates his squad, he will be able to at least get a result against the Gelsenkirchen club, for that is exactly what Thomas Tuchel did last week. Xabi Alonso is serving a suspension? No problem. Sebastian Rode – Guardiola's favorite workhorse – can step in and help Thiago control the midfield.

Where Bayern have to be a little careful is on the flanks, the area Schalke like to attack the most. Juan Bernat and Philipp Lahm will not be marking the same players either with the way Breitenreiter likes to shift his attack, but if David Alaba and Joshua Kimmich wind up teaming up again, their quickness should be able to adjust without any issues. Bayern will also be facing an organized defense, but one that does not make the best marking decisions, which means servicemen Douglas Costa and Kingsley Coman could have a field day.

Guardiola has tasked himself with motivating his squad this weekend, and if a pumped-up side comes out of the tunnel at Allianz Arena, Schalke better watch out.

Projected Lineup (4-2-3-1):

Robert Lewandowski

Douglas Costa – Thomas Müller – Kingsley Coman

Thiago Alcantara – Sebastian Rode

Juan Bernat – David Alaba – Joshua Kimmich – Philipp Lahm

Manuel Neuer

Bench: Sven Ulreich, Serdar Tasci, Javi Martinez, Rafinha, Arturo Vidal, Franck Ribery, Mario Götze

Out/Suspended: Xabi Alonso (yellow card suspension), Holger Badstuber (ankle), Jerome Boateng (groin), Arjen Robben (groin)

The Opponent

Schalke continues to be the most underperforming club in the Bundesliga despite the fact they are in the European picture once again. Breitenreiter has had to fend off critics who doubt his coaching qualifications, but in his defense, he has a very young squad he has to try to bring to the next level.

One of the players who may have found the next level is Leroy Sané, but his glamorous first half of the season has sunk into a gloomy second. His decline got to the point that Breitenreiter was selecting Bayern reject and 2. Bundesliga talent Alessandro Schöpf instead of him, not the greatest endorsement for a player who clubs are salivating over. Sané appears to have rekindled some of that first-half form though, and with Max Meyer coming into his own and Younes Belhanda settling in, Schalke have a very interesting attack despite not having a quality striker.

A young team can sometimes overachieve if it has a solid foundation, but Roman Neustädter and Joël Matip do not provide any foundation whatsoever. They seem solid on the flanks, and Breitenreiter's defensive tactics are not bad, but the two center backs are an atrocious pair with horrible defensive instincts. Gladbach did pick apart their defense a few weeks back but didn't finish their chances, and that kind of luck is not going to happen again in Munich.

Despite their prototypical inconsistent form, they have a fighters chance of getting a result in Munich, but a lot of things have to break their way in order for that to come about.

Projected Lineup (4-2-3-1):

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar

Younes Belhanda – Max Meyer – Leroy Sané

Johannes Geis – Pierre Hojbjerg

Dennis Aogo – Roman Neustädter – Joël Matip – Junior Caiçara

Ralf Fährmann

Bench: Fabian Giefer, Marvin Friedrich, Matja Nastasić, Sascha Riether, Alessandro Schöpf, Erik-Maxim Choupo-Moting, Franco Di Santo

Out/Suspended: Leon Goretzka (shoulder), Benedikt Höwedes (hamstring), Sead Kolasinac (yellow card suspension), Sidney Sam (muscle tear), Atsuto Uchida (knee)

The Outcome

How does Schalke think they have a chance when they sat back against a reserve Dortmund side at home in a big German derby? Traveling to Munich is bound to be a nightmare if the young Königsblauen don't show up to play. Even if they do, Bayern's solid midfield options – even without the suspended Alonso – will help the Bundesliga frontrunners control the game. Schalke's poor defensive pair will allow Müller and Lewandowski to do what they do best – slip in behind the defense and score oodles of goals.

Projected Score: Bayern Munich (3-0) FC Schalke 04

Yellow cards can be a pain.

Bayern Munich will be without the services of Xabi Alonso when they take the field against Schalke in their next Bundesliga match. Alonso picked up his fifth yellow card against Stuttgart during Bayern's 3-1 victory and will have to sit out.

The card that Alonso received was rather contentious. During the first half, Alonso made a challenge on Timo Werner as the Stuttgart midfielder dribbled up the middle of the park. Werner threw himself to the ground to the annoyance of Alonso.

Alonso ran to the referee and yelled about the fact that, in his opinion, Werner dove to the ground without any contact between the two. The replays were inconclusive, and Alonso was shown a yellow card for his troubles.

With Alonso out, perhaps we see the return of Sebastian Rode against Schalke next weekend?
