Things may not be super peachy at Bayern Munich right now, but at least the sporting department aren’t settling for wallowing as they have agreed to an extension with Thiago Alcantara until 2021.
Christian Falk reports that the club and Thiago have agreed to a two-year extension — Thaigo’s current contract runs through 2019 — that will boost him into the ranks of the club’s top earners. Thiago’s last extension in summer 2015 elevated him to €8M+incentives in salary per season, and given the financial layout Bayern have placed at the feet of Thomas Müller and Robert Lewandowski over the last 18 months, Thiago should be climbing into the €12-15M per season club.
And there’s no denying he’s earned it. Thiago has been the heart and soul of Bayern’s midfield and their most important player this entire season. He’s the lynchpin of everything Carlo Ancelotti pushes this team to do. Now he’s close to getting paid like it.
Falk also adds that this new contract was also in response to several suitors for Thiago and a transfer fee of €90M. In the modern game, that seems a relative pittance for a player as dominating as Thiago.
