While the new Bayern Munich was interested in transferring for Douglas Costa may have surprised some, it did not surprise Shakhtar Donetsk manager Mircea Lucescu. Speaking with Romanian website Dolce Sport, Lucescu reveals the continuous interest in his 24-year-old winger.
"I find it absolutely normal," said Lucescu. "Inter Milan wanted him as well. There have been discussions since winter."
It was Lucescu who brought in Douglas Costa from Grêmio in 2010, and the Romanian manager played him right away. He also revolved his system around Douglas Costa and Taison, occasionally swapping the two to get Douglas Costa a better look against the defense. Lucescu has a strong inkling he could be the player Bayern use to help the club move on from 31-year-old Arjen Robben.
"I see him has a Robben replacement; he has the same profile," said Lucescu. "He's 24 years old, and in the coming years he can reach [Robben's] level."
