The summer transfer window is just two months away, and Ilkay Gündogan may not be the only midfielder Bayern Munich has interest in. A source has told Albanian newspaper Telegrafi the Bundesliga champions have reached an agreement with Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka.
"Granit has reached an agreement in principle with Bayern and is expected to transfer to the Allianz Arena this summer," the source told Telegrafi. "I can not say more details but the transfer can only fail if the two clubs cannot agree.
The source goes on to say the swiss international wants to move to Munich, and hopes Mönchengladbach allows him to complete the transfer. Altético Madrid are also reportedly interested in the young midfielder, but Xhaka and sporting director Max Eberl denied the midfielder had interest in moving there.
The 22-year-old signed a contract extension earlier this season that would keep him with Mönchengladbach until 2019. However, Bild reported in March the contract has a €30 million buyout clause, an attainable figure for Bayern to match.
Xhaka is a crucial factor in Mönchengladbach's rise to the top of the Bundesliga, and is now among the best midfielders in Germany. He is part of the golden generation in Switzerland, coming up wit former Bayern winger Xherdan Shaqiri in the Basel academy. He transferred to Mönchengladbach in 2012 for €8.5 million, and be came a regular with the Fohlen when he was just 20-years-old.
Despite a plethora of central midfielders, Bayern's depth has grown thin with some of the veteran players experiencing fitness issues. Whether Xhaka can supplant those midfielders outright is yet to be seen, but he is a player who could impact the Rekordmeister upon his arrival.
