Report: For extension, Alexander Nübel would have to be starter by 2025 at Bayern Munich

Timing is everything.

During his loan stints at AS Monaco and VfB Stuttgart, Bayern Munich goalkeeper Alexander Nübel has proven himself to be a capable starter in Europe.

More, the 27-year-old looks like a natural successor to Neuer, when the veteran decided to finally hang up his cleats. However, there are a couple of problems with that scenario:

  • No one knows when Neuer will retire.
  • Nübel does not want to come back to the club without the assurance that he will be the No. 1.

According to Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg, Nübel’s willingness to return to ink a contract extension and accept another loan is on the table, but the player’s timeline puts things somewhat in doubt:

News #Nübel: The extension of his contract beyond 2025 remains a topic, as reported exclusively at the beginning of December.

⚠️ But: An extension for Nübel is currently highly unlikely if Neuer stays fit and renews his contract again!

➡️ Nübel and FC Bayern are in contact, but there is no written offer yet

➡️ The 27 y/o could consider an extension and another loan next summer only if he becomes the undisputed No. 1 in 2025. Internally, Nübel is currently the top candidate to succeed Neuer.

Nübel will have options outside of Bayern Munich. With some Premier League clubs already rumored to be interested, Nübel has shown enough talent to land a starting gig somewhere. As for Neuer, it does not look like he has shown any signs of slowing down as of yet. Neuer being the starter in 2025 at Bayern Munich does not seem all that unlikely, which could push Nübel to move on.
