As he watched his team scuffle through a 1-1 draw against FC Basel in Switzerland, Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel walked away conflicted.
The manager liked some of what he saw, just not enough.
“We couldn’t capitalize on the chances we got in the first half, otherwise we would have clearly won the first half. In the second half we had 20 minutes that weren’t good and we were punished,” Tuchel said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “The substitutions gave us more energy. Things got even better at the back. The boys who were subbed on wanted to show something. We would have liked to win, that has to be our aim, too. But it was a test match first and foremost.”
With transfer rumors swirling and a what probably amounted to a hefty sum of rust to shake off, Bayern Munich is not yet ready for real action in the Bundesliga. It would have been more reassuring if the team’s veterans would have been more assertive in the match. Instead, the club’s hungry youngsters did their best to make an impact and show what they could do.
It will be back to the drawing board for Tuchel and his boys. Hopefully, the next game will produce a better result.
