Ever since his arrival from Serie A champions Napoli, Kim Min-jae has been nothing short of incredible for Bayern Munich. Playing every game since joining and giving high-profile teammate Matthijs de Ligt a run for his money, the Korean defender’s performances last calendar year has earned him the title of Korean Football Player of the Year 2023, stopping Tottenham Hotspur winger Son Heung-min from picking up a fifth straight award and eighth overall (via Yonhap News Agency).

Kim topped the charts with 137 points, followed by Son on 117 and Paris Saint-Germain’s Lee Kang-in on 84 points. The 27-year-old Kim helped Bayern keep a second-best record for goals conceded in the Bundesliga with 15. Although the Rekordmeister is four points behind Bayer Leverkusen on top, the former is still in contention for the title and an unprecedented 12th straight league title since 2013.

The defender issued a statement to orea Football Association (KFA), which was captured by Korea JoongAng Daily.

“I think it was the most special year of my life,” Min-jae said. “I’m not sure if I can ever earn a bigger honor than this. I shouldn’t stop here, and I have to work harder to improve, but I think it was still the best year yet.”

Kim will be away on international duty for the 2024 Asian Cup.
