Bayern Munich needs to add defensive depth and it seems the search is leading the Bavarians back towards a back three setup in defense.

With Kim Min-jae, Dayot Upamecano, and Matthijs de Ligt, the Bavarians have three major stars already at the center-back position, but are short on depth. However, coach Thomas Tuchel’s search is naturally landing at players who also expect to start — from FC Barcelona’s Ronald Araújo to now Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah.

From Sport Bild, via @iMiaSanMia:

Thomas Tuchel, Christoph Freund and the scouting team are discussing transfers not only for this month, but also beyond January. Thomas Tuchel has various ideas in mind for the defense and is keeping his eyes open for reinforcements beyond the winter. The coach is very impressed with the recent development of Jonathan Tah. Another defender would also allow him more tactical flexibility. A back 3 system is a serious option in Tuchel’s plans [@altobelli13, @cfbayern]

Tah, 27, is becoming a mainstay in the Germany national team — a factor that no doubt has caught the eye of the bosses at Säbener Straße. But with Leverkusen leading the Bundesliga and needing extra cover for January due to AFCON, it is unlikely they will let go of their big talent mid-season.

Still, with one more summer transfer window many more squad changes are possible. Could it result in another German defender landing in Bavaria — and a return to the back three formation?
