Christoph Freund’s role at Bayern Munich is set to shift in the summer

Freund has a tough job now; starting in June, he will have some help in the form of Max Eberl.

After years of speculation, Bayern Munich finally got their man, Max Eberl, this year. He was sacked from his position as Director of Sport of RB Leipzig as his heart always, it seems, belonged to Bayern. Freund is set to navigate the transfer window in January to meet the team’s needs (and Thomas Tuchel’s demands). In the summer, as many contracts such as those of Joshua Kimmich, Leroy Sané and Alphonso Davies come into play, he will have assistance in the form of Borussia Mönchengladbach’s former sporting director. However, this also means that Freund will lose a bit of his power as it seems that Eberl will be his superior:

Christoph Freund is in charge of January transfers and is very confident that the defense will be strengthened successfully. In the summer, however, the cards will be re-shuffled, with Max Eberl also expected to be sitting at the negotiations table. Freund has already stated internally that he has no problem whatsoever with having a direct superior regarding transfer topics - especially since there are also important talks over new contracts

The defense needs strengthening (apparently, Matthijs de Ligt is not the defender of Tuchel’s dreams) and Eberl, whose transfers were quite successful at Gladbach and are proving successful at RB Leipzig should be a helpful addition.

That being side, in his first year in the Bayern Munich job, Freund is learning just how stressful things can be, especially as so many contract talks have been left to the last minute. As a result, he took some time off and spent his New Year’s break amidst the lights of New York:

Christoph Freund spent the new year’s holiday in New York to switch off and take a break ahead of the January transfer window. The sporting director is aware that 2024 has many tasks in store for him on the transfer market and that fulfilling Thomas Tuchel’s wishes this month, in particular, will be a big challenge for him

Did I mention Thomas Tuchel can be stressful?
