Thomas Tuchel’s confidence in Aleksandar Pavlović will save Bayern eight figures

Thomas Tuchel spent the better half of 2023 lamenting that Bayern Munich did not have a single player that could play the No. 6 role as a defensive midfielder. Tuchel was adamant that Joshua Kimmich (who is literally number six) was more of an offensive player. Bayern subsequently failed to complete a £58M deadline day transfer for Fulham’s João Palhinha, leaving everyone frustrated.

After Bayern’s 3-0 win over Hoffenheim, Tuchel changed his tune and applauded the players currently filling the defensive midfield role. Tuchel was especially keen on 19-year old Aleksandar Pavlović.

“Pavlović is a complete player for the team. We now have four players for the defensive midfield. We want to guarantee playing time. Realistic chances to play are essential,” Tuchel told Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg on why Palhinha would no tbe joining the club (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “Currently, we don’t have the greatest need in that position. We initiated the discussion as I analyzed the characters. The players are performing very well. They are very mobile.“

When presseed about Palhinha, Tuchel only offered this retort: “I only want to talk about our players.”

Bayern’s coaches, players, and fans have all been impressed by Pavlović’s fantastic run with the senior team. If he can continue to develop at this rate, Pavlović could find himself emulating Javi Martinez’s role that resulted in two Champions League trophies during his decade at Bayern.
