Bayern Munich was pitching a shutout against Hoffenheim so efficiently, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer might have taken a snooze. Fortunately for the Bavarians, he didn’t — and was alive to the task when the visiting team roared to life in the second half, forcing two point-blank saves.
The saves, which came when Bayern was still hanging on to a 1-0 lead, earned Neuer effusive praise from his head coach.
“He was calm, collected and was there when it mattered despite not being involved for so long,” said Thomas Tuchel after the match (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “It shouldn’t be a surprise because he has a huge experience and has been doing it for years. He’s still one of the best goalkeepers in the world and on his way back to his best level. I’m very happy for him personally and also for us in general. We know we can rely on him when we concede chances. He did that tremendously well.”
Neuer’s heroics spared his defense’s blushes and the Bayern attack would soon power the Rekordmeister on its way to a 3-0 win.
