Does Bayern Munich’s Thomas Tuchel rate Eric Dier above Matthijs de Ligt?

Surely not... right?

Bayern Munich has sealed its first signing of the January transfer window with the acquisition of former Tottenham man Eric Dier. While this move has been questioned by some, Dier could provide squad depth that Bayern is seriously lacking, but just where will he sit in the depth charts?

At the start of the season, it was widely expected that Bayern’s first-choice center-backs would be a pairing of Kim Min-jae and Matthijs de Ligt with Dayot Upamecano available as an excellent depth and rotation option.

However, this isn’t how things have played out. Instead, Thomas Tuchel has preferred Upamecano to the Dutchman due to De Ligt’s perceived inability to play progressive passes (according to FBREF de Ligt is in the top 9% of center-backs in the top 5 leagues when it comes to progressive passes completed).

If Tuchel’s displeasure with De Ligt wasn’t enough to cause worry about the center-back’s playing time after the signing of Dier, it was reported that Tuchel was a big fan of the Dier signing from the beginning. According to journalist Maximillian Koch, Dier could even feature against Hoffenheim (via @iMiaSanMia).

So, what do you think? Will Dier jump ahead of De Ligt in Tuchel’s depth charts, or is he more likely to play a role as an emergency backup? Be sure to let us know in the comments below!
