Ball in Alphonso Davies’ court as Bayern Munich, Real Madrid eye transfer poker

Time may be running out for the Bavarians to convince the Canadian international to sign a contract extension.

Bayern Munich might have a fight on its hands to keep star player Alphonso Davies — but La Liga giant Real Madrid is reportedly keeping its distance, for now. Per ESPN’s Madrid correspondent Alex Kirkland, via @iMiaSanMia:

Real Madrid will only move for Alphonso Davies if he opts not to renew, and Bayern choose to make him available for transfer rather than risk losing him for free the following summer. Madrid have a good relationship with Bayern and don’t want to be seen to interfere with the Bavarian club’s planning

Davies would be potentially interested in a move and is attracted by Madrid’s sporting project, but is also willing to hear Bayern’s final renewal offer before taking a decision. Davies is happy at Bayern and is grateful to a club which took a chance on him when they signed him from Vancouver Whitecaps in 2018

If he chooses not to extend his contract, and Bayern opt to sanction a summer 2024 move to avoid a 2025 free transfer, Madrid believe that reaching a swift agreement with the player and Bayern would be straightforward given their relationship [@alexkirkland]

This is not news per se. Bayern and Real have a history of transfer dealings — including recently Álvaro Odriozola — and the Spanish club is not exactly out of the picture by becoming a known alternative for Davies.

The pressure remains on for the Bavarians to tie down the Canadian superstar, who at 23 is among Bayern’s core of world-class young talent — alongside the likes of Jamal Musiala. The Bayern front office will know all too well the lure of Madrid, having lost another star defender, David Alaba, on a free transfer in 2021. With the summer transfer window coming up, it is now crunch time in the Davies negotiations.
