Radu Drăgușin rejects Bayern Munich and flies to Tottenham for his medical; Eric Dier now the top target

Well, we tried. Perhaps too late.

Looks like it’s gotta be Eric Dier, then.

Bayern Munich have lost the race for Genoa defender Radu Drăgușin, according to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports. The defender is on his way to London today for his medical, after which he will sign a contract with Tottenham Hotpsur. Despite making a last-minute bid yesterday which matched the Londoner’s offer, it looks like Christoph Freund has experienced his first failure as sporting director of Bayern Munich.

This move probably means that the club will pivot to Plan B, which is probably going to be Eric Dier. The Englishman is a friend of Harry Kane and reportedly already has a deal agreed with the Bavarians, though he clearly wasn’t the first choice. Dier can be a backup candidate at both defensive midfield and center-back, which will hopefully be enough to last the club until summer.

In the meantime, Thomas Tuchel still has Dayot Upamecano and Matthijs de Ligt, with Kim Min-jae set to return after the Asian Cup. That’s a pretty good complement of defenders, and Dier’s addition would mean Leon Goretzka would no longer have to fill in at center-back if things get tight.

Still, losing a major transfer target to Spurs is not a good look — questions will be asked about the board and the sporting director following the failure of the Drăgușin acquisition.
