Sepp Maier is a former Bayern Munich player, who unlike Didi Hamann or Lothar Matthäus, seems to have good takes.

The former goalkeeper likened Bayern star Thomas Müller to his namesake, the legendary Gerd Müller saying, “Thomas Müller is the Gerd Müller of modern times. Gerd would have been proud that Thomas extended his contract again. He is simply a Bayern legend, a good guy and a really good player. His professionalism, the authentic and funny way he goes on about things make him unique.” (Sport1 via @iMiaSanMia)

Thomas Müller has solidified himself amongst the likes of Maier and Gerd Müller as all-time Bayern greats, and it’s good to see the former generations of players supporting the current one as it enforces the feeling of family that is so important at Bayern.

Included in the impressive collection of records achieved by Thomas Müller are the Bundesliga assist record and the record for most Bundesliga titles won by a player. Müller is likely to add to his impressive tally of records by chasing down Maier’s record of most Bayern appearances as he currently has 676 to Maier’s 706.

Records are often the source of competition, but Maier isn’t troubled by the idea of losing the honor saying, “It will happen, and he is a worthy successor. I wish him that from the bottom of my heart. He deserves it.”

Sepp Maier shares the views of the overwhelming majority of Bayern fans in loving Thomas Müller. Maybe he could give Thomas Tuchel a call and convince the Bayern head coach to move Müller up the depth charts.
