2023 Women’s World Cup: Round of 16 game thread — Netherlands vs. South Africa

Can the dream run of South Africa continue, or are the Dutch marching deep into the tournament once more?

Today’s lineup

The Round of 16 continues at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Just one match in store for us today, 2019 runner-ups Netherlands taking on South Africa.

The Netherlands won Group H and claimed a solid draw against the USWNT, Jill Rood scoring her side an early goal on that occasion. They won their other group stage games without conceding.

South Africa, meanwhile, are one of the stories of the tournament so far. A sensational 3-2 win over Italy helped confirm their place out of Group G, where they finished behind Sweden. Thembi Kgatlana’s stoppage time goal, set up with a wonderful hustle from Hildah Magaia, is well worth the watch — along with the ensuing celebrations.
