The Suspense Continues

Note: this article has been updated on the night of the same calendar day (20 April 2023, UTC +8) to reflect recent developments.

The day has been beyond dreadful for our club. We may have managed to draw at home, but the heavy loss away means we are out of the UCL again. Unsurprisingly, this has increased the calls for the board to leave, given how much the club has fallen from grace, in the eyes of the fans. As if that was not enough, there is another club-related development that is worth sharing.

Remember when this author shared with the BFW community how Lucas' family persuaded him not to retire? Now, there is something else related to Lucas that the writer here would like to share, and it is not a good one for fans to read. Even the author here was caught off-guard again upon reading it. How so? It appears that contract extension talks have stalled. Just as we thought that there is progress, it appears that the gamble that the board took by changing the head coach may have an effect as to if and when the keystone of our defence's contract will be extended. Check this tweet from @iMiaSanMia that came out just a few hours after that final whistle.

This is understandably unwelcome news, especially since the comments section has overwhelmingly called for Lucas' contract to be extended soon. It seems that, by now, every time news about Lucas is shared, the fanbase is overwhelmingly supporting him. Seriously, even if Lucas' future is in the hands of the fans, he will almost certainly win support by a large margin. The news that Lucas' contract extension talks have not reached the stage we are expecting could very well only add fuel to the fire that is the board's unpopularity among the fanbase for essentially mismanaging our season. First, we got knocked out of the Pokal, then the UCL. Now, this, our defender, who unusually unites the fanbase, potentially not seeing that contract extension given soon? We thought the club cares for Lucas, especially after what happened last season. Lucas even thanked the club for the support they gave him during that difficult time.

Referring to the title of this article, the news above has surely re-ignited the suspense in our defence, and by extension, the whole team, which only got enhanced since the World Cup. Well, it appears that the whole mini-series that is Lucas' contract extension progress has just got more interesting, as @iMiaSanMia posted another update on this topic hours after the one shown above earlier. Only this time, the news is a more positive one, as it seems that it would only be a matter of time before Lucas' contract is finally extended, perhaps to much fanfare. Check it out below.

Two separate pieces of news, with polar opposite tones, about the same topic? As this piece's article says, "the suspense continues". We will just have to wait and see which tone prevails in the end. Speaking of the end, as of the time of posting this, and the subsequent update, it is 20 April 2023 in the place where the writer of this article is right now. This means that, for Muslims, Hari Raya Aidilfitri is fast approaching. As someone who has appreciated his stay in the UAE last year and has resided in Malaysia for a few years, and thus observes Hari Raya Adilfitri himself, in spite of not being a Muslim, the author would wish everyone, especially Muslim readers, "Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri! Maaf zahir dan batin!"
