Report: Bayern Munich in talks to sign Ronald Araújo from FC Barcelona this winter

This would be absurd if Bayern could pull this off.

Big news coming out just now — according to Florian Plettenberg, Bayern Munich are in talks with FC Barcelona defender Ronald Araújo for a possible winter transfer. Apparently Thomas Tuchel is pushing for a move, with a phone call taking place between him, sporting director Christoph Freund, and Araújo earlier this week.

Barcelona fans will not be amused by this development.

The Uruguayan defender would be an absolutely massive signing for Bayern if the move goes through. He checks all the boxes — an aggressive, physical, ball-playing defender who can also slot in at right-back in cases of emergency. In essence, Araújo would be the club’s answer to the departure of Benjamin Pavard, who left for Inter Milan last summer.

Could this transfer actually go through? Well, Plettenberg is a reliable reporter, although his sources within the club have taken a hit since Hasan Salihamidžić was fired. If he says that Araújo is a topic, then it must mean that some form of discussions have taken place. Whether the player is interested or not — that is another matter entirely.

As for Barcelona, would they even let the 24-year-old go? Certainly not in the winter, at least. Then again, the Catalans are suffering from severe financial difficulties, and a big transfer fee from selling Araújo could help them make some moves to strengthen the rest of their squad in the winter.

It’s more plausible than it sounds.
