Bayern Munich is in need of acquiring defenders during the winter transfer window, and it is a need that has now trumped the preference that Thomas Tuchel had earlier to going all in for a defensive midfielder. He still would really love to be able to sign Fulham’s João Palhinha, but the London-based outfit my ultimately wind up asking for more than Bayern is ready to pay for the Portuguese international.

At the moment, it is relatively slim pickings for Bayern in the market for defensive reinforcements, especially after a summer window where they lost both Benjamin Pavard to Inter Milan and Josip Stanišić out on loan to Bayer Leverkusen. In hindsight, the latter was not a very clever move with how much the Croatian international could be used at both center back and right back this season.

Even with one of the potential targets Bayern has identified, it now looks like they will face some competition from Bundesliga rivals and leaders Bayer Leverkusen. Per information from SportBild’s Christian Falk and Tobia Altschäffl, both Bayern and Leverkusen have scouted Girona right back Arnau Martínez (via @iMiaSanMia).

Girona are La Liga’s surprise package this season, having led the league for several weeks as they currently occupy 2nd place behind Real Madrid. So far this season, Martínez has made 10 league appearances for Girona and has provided two assists, but he fits the billing for what Tuchel and Bayern are currently looking for. He an also play inside and even in midfield. Arnau would be an alternative to Barça star Ronald Araújo, who was recently linked to Bayern but now probably wants to extend his contract in Barcelona.

His current contract with Girona runs through June 2025 and he is currently valued at around 15-million euros, so Bayern could potentially get him for a decent fee, knowing that he is entering the final year on his contract and there could be pressure for Girona to sell him.
