Bayern Munich’s Josip Stanišić has been a very promising defender since joining the Bavarians. However, Bayern made a highly criticized decision by loaning the Croatian out to Bayer Leverkusen this offseason. Bayern, who lost defensive reinforcements in the offseason, decided to lend Stanišić’s services to a title competitor.
Stanišić and many others might have assumed leaving Bayern Munich would actually mean more playtime and opportunity to develop. However, the truth has been quite the opposite. Bayern Munich have an intense need for defensive players, and are trying desperately to acquire players in the winter window. Meanwhile, Leverkusen have two of the best full-backs in Europe at the moment, rendering Stanišić to a minuscule role.
Josip Stanišić on his time at Leverkusen so far: "Of course things could be better for me personally. It would be a lie if I said everything was perfect. But I'm here to help the team, it is how it is. Josip Stanišić on his time at Leverkusen so far: “Of course things could be better for me personally. It would be a lie if I said everything was perfect. But I’m here to help the team, it is how it is. I joined the team quite late and unfortunately I was also sick against Bayern - Odi (Kossounou) had done an outstanding job up until then - and is still doing a great job. Of course I’ll keep going and try to do my best whenever I play. It doesn’t help to bring a bad mood into the team. Of course there are days when I’m in a worse mood, but that’s just my nature — I’m just someone who always wants to play.”
Surely, Stanišić would have a larger role in Munich, and get experience and chemistry with his actual teammates. It is safe to say it has been a mistake for both the Croatian and Bayern Munich thus far. Stanišić recently commented that he has been in a bad mood around the team. Regardless of how he is playing, moping around will serve him no favors.
That sort of attitude won’t be welcomed at any club, especially not Bayern Munich. At this point, he will need to make the most of his situation and show some maturity. With some playing time, he has the potential to be a great player when or if he returns to Munich.
