Former Bayern Munich star Jérôme Boateng did not get his desired return to the Rekordmeister, but is still high on his former club’s performances this season.
“The League title is always a must at Bayern and must be the goal with this team, even though Xabi Alonso is doing outstandingly well with Leverkusen,” Boateng said recently for German outlet kicker (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “However, Bayern are doing much better than it’s being portrayed in the media, their record speaks for them — with the exception of the elimination from the DFB-Pokal.”
That places the Bavarians as one of the premier contenders in this year’s Champions League, according to the 35-year-old free agent center-back. Bayern steamrolled their group this season, securing top place with two matches to spare.
Although it is another Bayern alum’s team, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, that is unsurprisingly at the top of the pecking order.
“The group stage was good, not outstanding, but it’s not a reference. Things get exciting from the round of 16 onwards. Manchester City are probably a bit above everyone else, then comes Real Madrid, FC Bayern and perhaps [Arsenal FC],” Boateng concluded.
