Bayern Munich decided that they need a midfielder because they don’t have enough players for it. The current crop of midfielders consists of Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, and Konrad Laimer, all of whom have one thing in common: they are all CMs not CDMs. Granted, the Bavarians are now split on if they want a destroyer type of No. 6 or a DLP (deep-lying playmaker):

Internally, there’s still debate over which type of midfielder the team needs: a type destroyer à la Palhinha or a ball progressor like Thiago in 2020. Palhinha is not off the table. @kerry_hau says he has good contact with the Portuguese midfielder’s camp, they don’t want to comment right now, but there will soon be information. Nevertheless, the priority remains to strengthen the backline, especially with Mazraoui and Kim leaving for their national teams in January.

Considering that he current midfield personnel that the Rekordmeister have are all decent ball carriers, a destroyer à la Javi Martinez is what the club needs right now.
