Leon Goretzka has seen a resurgence in form not only as a midfielder, but also as a defender in lieu of Bayern Munich’s defensive shortage. The 28-year-old has been a solid player in either position he played in which earned him praise from Thomas Tuchel.
“You can’t overstate it. We moved Leon from the centre of midfield to centre-back in the final training session. He did it very well,” Tuchel said (as captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMia). “His best position is when he can use his running strength between the boxes. He’s had very good performances in midfield and that’s still where we see him. Every time he’s played at centre-back, he’s played well.”
Granted, Goretzka has been playing with his hand in a cast from a previous injury that hasn’t finished healing. The fact that he could maintain this level of playing whilst being handicapped is a testament to his professionalism.
