After initially refusing to name any particular reasons for the unexpected defeat at the hands of the former Nagelsmann’s understudy, Thomas Tuchel collected his thoughts and managed to return to his well known analytical self.
As reported via @iMiaSanMia Tuchel added to his first comments the following: “We expected [Frankfurt to play with] a back four. They did play with a back four. But on the team sheet it looked like a back five. Maybe we gave too much information to the team after the warm-up and took a bit of focus away from what we actually wanted. That probably was a piece of the puzzle today.”
It is really hard to imagine that a professional sports team ranking in the top three globally would produce this kind of performance due to some extra information delivered to them from the coach prior to kick-off.
What would possibly be the biggest part of the puzzle, would slip out of the coach in a further part of the post-match comments.
“Conceding five goals without making mistakes is not possible. That happened today. We were severely punished. I think the team performance today was simply not enough - I’m also part of the team I’m responsible. We will analyze it critically with the team and then we will move onto the next game” added Tuchel. (via @MiaSanMia)
While it is nice to see Tuchel take a form of tactical responsibility for the humiliating result and to try and keep a united front, the game raised a lot of questions regarding the coach and the players. The whole Bayern Munich performance today was, to put it mildly, one to be forgotten. Let’s hope this will serve as an ignition for better performances in the future.
