Germany’s men’s national team is flailing ahead of EURO 2024, with questions circling about how head coach Julian Nagelsmann will react to recent competitive setbacks.
For some pundits, appearances are everything.
Nagelsmann’s midweek appearance to watch Stuttgart’s 2-0 DFB-Pokal victory over Dortmund was, in the eyes of one pundit, clouded by the controversy of watching the game with his girlfriend.
“When I saw that, I thought to myself: That can’t be true,” said former Bayern Munich, Liverpool FC, and Manchester City star Didi Hamann, as reported by Bild and captured by @iMiaSanMia. “The national team is up to its neck in water and the coach goes on a family trip to Stuttgart with the motto: Things will be fine. For me, this is unprofessional, incomprehensible and hard to beat in terms of ignorance.”
Bild also covered an alternate view from another Bayern and Germany alum, Lothar Matthäus. Unlike Hamann, Matthäus did not assume any mottos on Nagelsmann’s part.
“It’s up to each person. Julian is watching a game with his girlfriend – I don’t see anything critical about it,” Matthäus assessed.
