Transfer rumor: Bayern Munich eyeing Stuttgart defender

Could the Bavarians plug gaps in defensive depth with a bargain option from the Bundesliga?

Bayern Munich has a glaring need for defensive reinforcements in the January transfer window, but the top of the market will not be easy to access. Instead, per a new report from Sky Sports DE, the Bavarians may look within the Bundesliga. The target: 27-year-old VfB Stuttgart defender Waldemar Anton.

Bayern are keeping an eye on Stuttgart defender Waldemar Anton (27) and have been impressed by his performances this season. However, Anton feels very comfortable in Stuttgart and VfB want to extend his contract beyond 2025 [@_dennisbayer, @Plettigoal]

Anton captains Die Schwaben and can cover the center-back and right-back roles for Bayern, with the additional ability of stepping into midfield. He is rated only €7m by Transfermarkt currently and his contract expires in 2025.

Stuttgart, however, has every reason to expect to keep him. Anton has been a mainstay on the squad for years and would likely serve as a depth piece at Bayern only, behind options like Matthijs de Ligt and Dayot Upamecano at center-back and Noussair Mazraoui and Konrad Laimer at right-back.

Could Thomas Tuchel offer Anton enough playing time — and could the Bayern bosses offer enough salary — to tempt him into a switch?
