Who’s the bozo that put a Friday game right after an international break?

Friday games are miserable and no one likes them, least of all Bayern Munich — especially after an international break. Most of the players just played a grueling round of international fixtures a few days ago, and many of them only just returned to Germany on Wednesday. This gives the coach a miserably small amount of time to get his team ready for the game against Köln.

Team news

Mercifully, Bayern Munich somehow escaped the international break with no new injuries. Aside from Jamal Musiala and Matthijs de Ligt, Thomas Tuchel practically has a full squad available for the Köln game. Of course, looks can be deceiving. Certain players, like Kim Min-jae, have played so many minutes in recent months that they’re legitimately at risk of injury right now.

Thomas Tuchel will need to find a balance somewhere, and in many cases he simply has no choice but to start the best players available. In this case, it would mean having a lineup with Harry Kane up top and Thomas Müller behind him, with Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sané on the wings.

Joshua Kimmich returns from suspension and, while there is a certain section of the fanbase that would rather see him benched, the coach put his whole backing behind the embattled midfielder in his recent press conference. He will likely start alongside Leon Goretzka in a midfield pivot.

This leaves the defense, which remains thin enough to select itself. Alphonso Davies and Noussair Mazraoui are likely to start at fullback, with Kim Min-jae and Dayot Upamecano in the middle. Out of those four, only Upamecano got any rest during the break — the rest played non-stop games. Manuel Neuer, who was not called up for international duty this month, will reprise his role in the lineup as keeper.

Here’s what it could look like:
