Austria manager Ralf Rangnick knows exactly what’s wrong with Germany

It’s a good thing Germany automatically qualify for Euro 2024.

It doesn’t matter who’s in charge, the German national team is perpetually in a dire state. Losing seems to have become the norm as Germany suffered defeat at the hands of Ralf Rangnick’s Austria.

While many may attribute Leroy Sané’s red card as a primary reason for the loss, Rangnick identified Germany’s defending as a key issue in a statement made after the match.

“They are conceding too many goals at the moment. Today there were two goals. It’s been a while since they’ve kept a clean sheet. Everything else is Julian’s business. If you concede two or three goals every game, then it’s difficult to win,” Sané said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).

On the night Dortmund center-back Mats Hummels had a particularly disastrous match and was directly responsible for the concession of the second goal. As easy as it would be to pin the blame on Hummels, the 2014 World Cup winner wasn’t involved in the match against Turkey where the high amount of goals conceded was also an issue.

Hopefully, Julian Nagelsmann can find a solution before the Euros or it will be another disappointing tournament for the Germans.
