Rumours about the future of Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies and his potential move to Real Madrid have recently been gaining traction. Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund is aware of the situation and had this to say about the rumours in an interview with Bild (via @iMiaSanMia), “I’ve already spoken to Phonzy’s agent. Real Madrid is not my topic. I’m speaking to him about our plans with Phonzy here at FC Bayern.”
While some fans might be calling for Der Reckordmeister to cash in on Davies now to avoid losing him for a reduced fee closer to the expiration of his current contract in the summer of 2025, or for free like what happened with Niklas Süle in his move to Dortmund.
Despite selling being an option, Freund is firm on his stance and had this to way when asked if Bayern’s objective is to get Davies to stay, “Yes, of course - and preferably long-term. He’s a great guy who came to FC Bayern from Canada at an early age and had a great development here. He gives us something special with his dynamism and pace.”
Before his big move to Germany, Alphonso Davies broke the record of being the youngest-ever debutant for the Vancouver Whitecaps where he terrorized MLS defences between 2016 and 2019 before becoming a Bayern player. During his time in Canada, Davies also picked up the honour of top scorer in the 2017 Gold Cup and was named the 2018 Canadian Men’s Footballer of the Year.
Since joining Bayern, Davies has won numerous trophies, including the Champions League title in 2020. Fans can only hope that the player will stay with the club and contribute to the winning of even more trophies in the future.
