It could end up being a battle of superpowers in the Champions League.

Former Bayern Munich star and current Real Madrid defender David Alaba admitted that he still keeps tabs on his old club.

“Of course I’m always following FC Bayern. They’re having a very good season so far. Yes they were knocked out of the Pokal, but they’ve been doing very well in the Champions League and in the Bundesliga,” Alaba told Sport1 (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).

When asked who might be the team better equipped to the Champions League — Bayern Munich or Real Madrid — Alaba played it safe.

“I think that depends on so many details. Both teams have the quality to win the Champions League. Of course our goal is to be at the top in the end, but there’s still a very long way to go,” Alaba said as he deftly avoided starting unnecessary drama.

Many observers consider Bayern Munich and Real Madrid to be two of three prime contenders — along with Manchester City — for the Champions League crown. As Alaba said, a lot can happen between now and the finale at Wembley, but it would not be shocking to see any of those three aforementioned super-powers walk away with the crown.
